  • One of the most iconic amplifier and cabinet pairings of all time, the Peavey 5150 and the Mesa Boogie Recto Standard (OS) 4x12 has been featured on countless records and used by tons of bands, but why? Is it really the KING of metal tone? Let's take a look at it, and ALSO let's see how digital modelers go about recreating the signal chain digitally for funsies.

      Hi Taylor! It sounded like the ampero has an eq problem... 🤔By the way, new update has been released for Ampero and I noticed a little change in the modelers after installing the new update. Maybe I'm wrong because It is not said that there has been any change in this matter in the update.
      Maybe would you make a short video about this? and with EQ matching...

      honestly this shootout was such an awesome demonstration.
      Not sure if you have the Quad Cortex yet - but would be cool to do a shootout between a capture of your block letter vs the real thing! If not maybe a shootout like this comparing the neural plugins vs the block letter since NDSP does have a good few amps modeled after the 5150. I think the Gojira suite’s heavy amp is a 5153 w/ EL34?

      @@TaylorDanley it would seem that no matter what line 6 does, they can't seem to break free from the stigma of their earlier sounding tones etc. So many people bash on line 6 the world over.. I'm not sure if it's due to actual experience with the products and not liking the tones or if it's and expectation not met straight from the box. No idea really.. One things for sure, I have somehow always been able to achieve some notably 'decent' tones. At least for my uses. I never really minded diving deeper into any piece of gear i've had to make it sound as i'd like. Perhaps some people simply don't like that possibility/option(s)? I've been contemplating getting the POD Go because of it's seemingly tonal flexability and ease of use.. Your demo has provided more info towards that purchase..

    • @Stefan-
      @Stefan- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@continuum288 It has the exact same simulations of amps/speakers and effects (except for a few missing), due that it has about half of the DSP power it cant run as many amps/effects and it just has a very simple effectchain and fewer functions/IO in general. I just got a Peavey 6505+ the other day. I spent 900. I overpaid but everything is inflated and the prices online were the same price range. So I ended up getting it and it sounds so great with my Mesa Oversized 4x12. I can see why a lot of bands went for this combo. I also have the Iconic and 50 watt stealth and I love it as much as those two. It just has a lot of fullness and aggression that I love.

    • @guitarandgames1386
      @guitarandgames1386 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean assuming it's 900$ US. That's a decent price for a plus. Most normal 6505s online and in my local area are going for 700-800. With the 6505+ usually being 1k or so for good condition

    • @jacobgarcia2660
      @jacobgarcia2660 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got my self a 6534+ for 900 bucks. Going into my mesa os 4x12 and man what killer combo. The amp can do old school thrash to modern djent style metal with no pedals needed either. With pedals like a overdrive or 10 band eq the amp breathes differently in a good way if that makes sense.

      I'll get flamed for this but in this video I think the Axe-Fx actually sounded better than the real amp. The real amp had some hyped up high treble that sounded like there was a constant haze of "cshhhhhh" over the tone. The Axe-Fx was just as complex and present in the treble overall but didn't have the obnoxious stand-out treble hissyness. Cool!

    August Burns Red has been using that combo for forever. It sounds good, but I always thought it was a weird change from the VHTs they used to use, which I've always thought sounded much better than the 5150.

    Hey Taylor,
    For the purpose of the Joyo Bantamp in the future, try isolating 1 or 2 speakers to the test. It will "level the playing field" so to speak with the larger Original amps. I've plugged in my 2 x 12 and even isolated for 1 speaker at a time. It's sounds nice.

    • @TaylorDanley
      @TaylorDanley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, but I didn't want to give it a handicap, I wanted to test it through the same cabinet specifically because a lot of people ask if it CAN power a 4x12 and to what extent.

  • @KyleKingGuitar

    Love these amps and would love to own the OG, although the used prices for them nowadays are silly.
    The cheapest I can find a mark 1 5150 in the UK at the moment (Block Letter) is £1,954, so about $2760. And this seems to be consistent when they pop up since people are seeing others listing theirs for high prices and follow the trend.
    I managed to pick up a 5150 2 for about £700 about a week ago and I feel that was pure luck, others were going for £1300.

    I like the 6505 tones here, though when I reach for a good sim I almost never use that sound lol. I go for a good Randall Thrasher tone or Ignite's NRR1. Thrasher for the techy things, NRR1 for more chunk. Of course I use a ton of Audio Assault things too′ Always messing about with sims these days. :p
    Have played / owned a real 6505 though, and it was a beast. Kind of a one trickster for metal though unless you boost it or put EQ pedal before the amp. This is just IMO, but the best real amp I've had was a Marshall DSL series is nastier and does interesting things with boosts. Wish I still had mine.
    As far as closeness, the Axe was spot on. Not surprising realy, that box is a powerhouse.
    Try and get a Laboga Mr Hector on the Channel. That thing is so monstrous. Cytotoxin used it on Gamageddon and I loooove that tone. It's tight but super grinding and ... broken. Lol. Best way I can describe it.

    • @TaylorDanley
      @TaylorDanley  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not usually. It really depends on the venue. I almost never use an actual amp live anymore, but it works the same regardless of the gear. If it’s a decent venue with a good sound system, I just let the sound guy do his thing. If we are playing a cavernous floor show with no sound system, then you kind of have to tweak to the room a little bit…. Usually cutting out low end and boosting the presence.

  • @void_snw
    @void_snw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think IRs are incredibly important. Often I find theres a lack of customization (mic position for example) and that they're trying a bit too hard to "not get lost" meaning they have too much mids, making them sound kinda boxy. Slap on something from OwnHammers heavy hitters pack and boom it's back. Sometimes it feels like the IR / Cab makes more of a difference than different amps (as long as it's not something like deluxe reverb vs plexi, that is)

    • @TaylorDanley
      @TaylorDanley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The IR's totally make the majority of the difference.. I feel like at least. Probably why the AxeFx sounds the most accurate, since their approach is to just have an IR loader built in rather than something that's trying to imitate cab/mic selection and position.

    The Ampero and the GE 250 both sound kinda boxy with the stock IR's and internal IR handling. I'd sooner disable the internal solution and either run through a cab with a power amp or use a separate hardware IR loader for those.

    The 5150 is a very popular amp in metal indeed, but the king is the Mesa Rectifier.

    • @TaylorDanley
      @TaylorDanley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd disagree.. I think the dual rec is a great amp, but in order to get a modern metal tone out of it, you almost have to use a boost. They're also much more temperamental to dial in, where as a 5150 just plugs in and goes chug instantly. But as far as classics, I'd say they both are synonymous with metal tone.

    • @CarcPazu
      @CarcPazu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TaylorDanley I agree that you need a TS with Recto. But on the other hand, you absolutely need an EQ with a 5150 because it's mostly all mids and highs. There's that hunky high that just clutters any mix unless you tame it down, I think 1-3.5k. I always disliked the 5150's palm-mute sound, there's something clunky and unreal about it, that's how I recorgnize a 5150 in a mix.

    I'm playing guitar for 20 years, I have a few high end guitars like the Jackson RR1 USA... Recently I purchased a 6505 a Mesa 4x12 OS and all 3 Tubescreamers (Ibanez TS9 and 808 and the Maxon 808) I immediately got that High gain metal tone I was looking for years and lost a good chunk of my hair to it. Hmm. That's nowhere near the tone I remember from my 5150. Granted I sold it before I got my Mesa cab, but I think we just go for completely different tones. This is like chainsaw death metal kind of loose tone. I remember it being ultra saturated, smooth and kind of buzzy but incredibly tight, perfect for thrash.
