For anyone watching in 2023 and beyond, prices on these have come way down. Amazon has the all metal Fusion Wrench Tether combo shown here for $160 total, not $280. Grigri is $99. Grigri+ is $115. Petzl Zigzag without swivel is $200. With swivel is $235. Chicane+Biner is $166. Rope Runner Pro $400. Akimbo $400.
Great explanation of the devices. Everyone is different and we all like the one we get used to. I have the Rope Runner Pro but I still think Blake’s Hitch. (Hey, I’m old). BUT, willing to adapt and so far, having fun. Blair
THANK YOU, FOR EXPLAINING, AND DEMONSTRATING THESE CLIMBING DEVICES. I RECENTLY STARTED BUYING A WHOLE PILE OF CLIMBING GEAR, IN ORDER TO BEGIN CLIMBING TREES,.. I HAVE A BIG WHITE PINE, THAT I NEED TO EVENTUALLY DE-LIMB, AND TAKE MOST OF IT DOWN, EXCEPT FOR MOST OF THE MAIN TRUNK ...(I'LL LEAVE THAT TO DECAY FOR AWHILE, FOR THE LOCAL WOODPECKERS, ETC.). I BOUGHT A COUPLE OF PETZL ASCENDERS, ( R & L HAND), AND, FOOD LOOPS,.. CLIMBING VIDEOS FOR BOTH ROCK CLIMBING, AND ARBORIST WORK, HAVE BEEN MY OBSESSION, LATELY!! THERE'S A LOT TO LEARN, AND MUCH TO CONSIDER, IN ORDER TO WORK SAFELY, OFF THE GROUND!!...
Thank you very much! I know the different markups that dealers make from different manufacturers so I've enormous respect for the impartiality of your advice and you always putting the climbing arborist first! 🌳❤
RRP Is so great. A little tip, for the RRP, put a DDM grommit in the attachment point and avoid sideloading and dangling carabiner! Great vids, keep em coming!
I actually found a way to collapse the zigzag with one hand. If you put your index finger on the upper pin of the chicane and pull it down, you can reach the zigzag with your other fingers and push it down. It takes a bit till your´re used to it, but I think it works great.
I haven’t had trouble with my zigzag and chicane setup for limb walking. It is a stretch, but I can tap on the zigzag with my pinky and have comfortable control. However I’ve had it for over 2 years and it’s starting to slip, so I bought the rrp after watching a few of your videos. Hoping it’s everything it seems. Love the videos. Thank you for your intel.
Maybe because I weigh 260lbs I never have a problem paying out rope while using the zigzag and the chicane. All I do is slightly depress the zigzag ever so slightly and down, or out, I go. The chicane slows my descent but it only slows it, I have never had to touch it to go down, or out on a rope.
Can you tie into the rope runner the same way you can throw your climbing line around a limb and use a benner to clip back into the zigzag ,can’t seem to do that on the rope runner pro , I just got one and thinking of getting the zigzag because of this ,can you help me please as I’m completely new to all this gear , great video
Thank you so much for all your info and techniques in all your videos....the best on utube in my opinion 👌...keep bringing any updates and changes that you make and keep up the awesome work...Thanks
How would you compare the RRP to the RE Akimbo? I've been looking into as many of the brands and models as I can before choosing a setup. Thanks! Great content, worth a sub.
Zigzag chicane, RRP, Akimbo, Unicender. What do you rate as your number one overall pick? I was going to get Akimbo because of the compactness, but it seems very picky to have the cleanest rope possible.
If anyone hasn’t said it already a great option to get your chicane close to the zigzag to make it tendable with one hand is to replace the carabiner connection between the zigzag and chicane with a quickee. Not technically petal approved because petal only wants you using their carabiners(money). But it is a totally safe option and is 3 or so inches more compact
Hey man im not a pro at all I bought the rope runner pro about a year ago .. I find it to be awesome but I did not know you can use it with a moving rope system how-do-you-do that.. Can you make a video on Rope runner pro with a moving rope system.. This video was definitely a great comparison for anybody looking to purchase a progress capture device...
It’s really pretty straightforward, nothing changes except that instead of having the end of the rope anchored in the canopy it’s anchored back to my bridge. No other adjustments necessary. I often switch back and forth in the same tree depending on how I need to move in the canopy.
Which is the best mechanical device for pitch have you found? I think you've reviewed the Roperunner Pro and the Uniscender, is it one of these (or both?). I take it hitch cord doesn't fair well with pitch?
I think both the Zigzag and the unicender perform just fine on a pitchy rope (less so with the zigzag if the chicane is also involved) the rope runner pro is affected negatively but not nearly so bad as the akimbo, and yes hitch-cord is also awful.
Thanks for all the awesome videos! Quick question: Did you remove your video on friction hitches? I can’t seem to find it anymore :( I think it was called essential knots part 2...
I just bought the rope runner pro with the xstatic rope. Haven’t gotten much play time with it but it seems pretty awesome the little bit I played with it. Thanks for your help Stider!
most Modern arborist climbing ropes will work well with the RRP. You could try most any 24 Strand double braid in the 11.5-12.5 mm range and it'll work fine. Just start low and slow and use the adjustment on the bird to dial in the feel for what you want. Probably should avoid any of the 12 or 16 strand solid braids though.
I will absolutely be doing that, I have the steel geckos, carbon geckos, and Edelrid talons, but the talons are off getting fixed and updated, when they come back sometime around the end of the month I’ll put together a comparison !! Also on the agenda is a review of the Edelrid Treerex harness
I use the akimbo more often, because it’s quick, compact and easily adjustable and I tend to have at least one newer clean rope to run it on, but as soon as all my climb ropes have pitch on them the akimbo goes in the bag and the RRP comes out.
I’d love to get my hands on one of those I’ve heard good things but they are not commercially available or certified by any major body as far as I know.
Hello!! I subscribed to your canal because I have to cut a 20 meter pine tree that is between 2 houses, buy me a chainsaw stihl ms310, 10mm rope, a grigri+ and other things, how can I cut and lower logs safely from above without letting them fall hard?? Do you have any video where it's shown? Thanks
Because you have to tie knots and that can be clunky for some people. That’s the ideal device in my opinion. A static amount of friction + a hitch (adjustable friction) in the smallest configuration possible.
I bought my rope runner pro off your suggestion. I love it. Not ready to explore alternatives. Thank you for the detailed demonstration.
Glad to hear it man :) how’s it been treating you?
What rope are you running with it ?

What's DDM Grommit ? Sorry I'm new in this
Rope wrench with zig zag plus is the ticket 🤙
I just purchased that exact setup!
@@treeman5970 You'll love that set up. Way better than that plastic ripoff chicane
That being said fellas the chicane goes great with hitch climber pulley and hrc cord..not with zigzag..and cord don't slip or get hit from above ..

Nice reviews bro! Hope the family is healthy and happy!
Hitches are special because of the unique attributes like feel and how many knots there is to try

I run the petzl setup. I love how smooth it runs, but i agree, the fact that you cant easily collapse the chicane is the ONE issue I have with it
Which one is best for strength of
More than 100 kg
How would you compare the RRP to the RE Akimbo? I've been looking into as many of the brands and models as I can before choosing a setup. Thanks! Great content, worth a sub.
Your weight and rope choice is the issue .not device
Zigzag chicane, RRP, Akimbo, Unicender. What do you rate as your number one overall pick? I was going to get Akimbo because of the compactness, but it seems very picky to have the cleanest rope possible.
If I had to pick just one I’d get the zigzag, but I’d put a rope wrench on it rather than the chicane. I don’t like the chicane.
What length prusik cord do you use?
Great video man, learn alot!

Can I use the rope runner pro if I weigh 320lbs?
Can the tethered rope wrench with the zig zag be collapsed enough so you can reach the zig zag with the rope wrench?
Sometimes yes sometimes no, depending on which tether you use.
Great tutorial!!! So, I just received a free Notch fusion tether and my question is. Which climbing rope do you recommend for this SRT???
Thanks,
Joe
One that does both srt drt ..ivy or yale family

I think it was called essential knots part 2...
I did, an astute observer pointed out that my Blake’s and Michoacán hitches were slightly off, so I wanted to edit that before it gets reposted.
The way I learned was slightly off, and it never caused me any trouble, but upon closer examination they were right about the error.
I just bought the rope runner pro with the xstatic rope. Haven’t gotten much play time with it but it seems pretty awesome the little bit I played with it. Thanks for your help Stider!
Awesome, that’s a great combo
What is your favorite rope wrench knot?
Lots of pulleys need more videos. Thanks
Can’t get the Notch fusion in the UK.
Would you like to try out one of my aluminum tether?
Where can I purchase one and/or watch a video or image of one? Thank you

could we have comparisons of climbing spurs that you have climbed with?
Half my crew have switched to edelrid and are raving about them
@@neild7971 Ive bought my self the edelrids i just havent seen many people review them but i am impressed buy them

If your carabiner is going sideways just get one with an captive eye
Why does the hitch hiker never get any love compact, simple.
It is, and I have one, but it doesn’t get used because I have trouble tending the rope smoothly with one hand.
Because you have to tie knots and that can be clunky for some people. That’s the ideal device in my opinion. A static amount of friction + a hitch (adjustable friction) in the smallest configuration possible.
Uniscender gang
Yeah the chicane is a big disappointment.... I'm a huge petzl fan but they really let me down with it... especially for the price you pay for it..
Great comparison. Your making me more and more unhappy with the whole Petzl setup.
I wouldn't be so unhappy! I unfortunately dont own a petzl setup, but the times i climbed on it, i loved it!
It really is so buttery smooth though! I still use my Zigzag pretty often, just not so much the Chicane.
hitch hiker beats them all.
UNICENDER ;)
I'm going to try the Petzl Flow with the Unicender.
the SM'D carabiner works better with the chicane
Strider check out my vid I just did on my rope wrench / rope runner hybrid it checks all the boxes peace
I’d love to see it !
