When we finally allow our egos to come into faithful service to our Greater Personalities, and, at the same time defend our own humanity against this Self, this Greater Personality, an entity that is in us, that is us, but is beyond good and evil, so that in our moral choices on how to behave in this world, moral choices based on an intuitive connection with the reality of Natural Law, we have a foot hold in heaven, and heaven, has a foot hold on earth. Heaven and earth become one in our experience. I am very grateful for the Friends of Jung, San Diego, and, the work of this most remarkable man, Edward Edinger.

Good question: I suggest you listen to Mark Passio's lectures on Natural Law and then I'll ask you a question. How could one possibly ignore it in seeking one's encounter with the Greater Personality? Should a pilot ignore the law of gravity? @@thevalkyrie8

I truly want to thank the San Diego Friends of Jung team for sharing this valuable wisdom for all. I listen and re listen to this lecture from Mr Edinger over the course of my own development through the years. Everytime I come back to it there is an extra piece of understanding that I can relate to experientially. Having the chance to get guidance of this caliber available to as far as Sweden is indeed a blessing I cannot put human value to. Thanks!

It's a brilliant talk about the ego’s encounter with the Self, which Jung also called the Greater Personality, using four examples: Jacob and the angel of Yahweh in the thirty-second chapter of Genesis; Arjuna and Krishna in the Baghavad Gita; Paul and Christ in the Book of Acts; and finally Nietzsche and Zarathustra.
I especially liked his statements: “Jungian psychology is the only psychological standpoint that operates out of an awareness that there are two centers in the psyche.” “Those two centers must collide. They must have an encounter with each other.”

Am surprised though that he left out the example (which was cited in both the works of Jung and Marie Von Franz) of Moses and Khidr.

This is rock 'n roll. For me, Edinger is one of the most readable of the Jungians. His psychodynamic interpretation of the story of Jonah especially made an impression on me (found in his work "Ego and Archetype"),

Ego and Archetype is an excellent book and provides great information about the relationship of the Ego and the Self prior to Self Realization. Prior to Self Realization, the ego and the Self seem like 2 separate centers. After shadow integration, which takes years and even decades, the ego becomes fully integrated with the Self and the evolving person becomes the Self, which is and always has been the case. You are always your Self but the Self is not realized in most people. Essentially, the ego submits to a death/rebirth process (Individuation) and the ego is reborn as the Self. Surprise surprise, we discover that we are actually evolving Divine Beings and that our True Nature is Divine. We are all sons and daughters of Spirit. Peace.

I listen to this over and over and so appreciate whoever uploaded this to youtube. If you have any more live audios of Edward Edinger, please upload them. There used to be the entire series of an explanation of AION by Edinger and it is now no longer available. Fortunately I downloaded those five years ago.

Many thanks for sharing the voice and ideas of this great man. For anyone interested in knowing more about the ego-Self relationship, Edinger´s "Ego and Archetype" is wonderful. Also"The Eternal Drama" takes a Jungian look at the fundamental Greek myths that still move us and move through us.

This is brilliant. Nuggets about Nietzche's encounters with God as a 12 year old. Nietzche proved to be the canary in the coal mine for Jung. Probably saved Jung from meeting a similar fate.

3:50 When this experience falls on [them] _from above_
Prior to = below while during/after = above
4:01 Previously I've heard of thee by the hearing of the ear, but now my eyes sees thee.
Prior to = hearing (indirect/unclear/behind), while during = sight (direct/clear/front)
4:07 That's what happens when this experience falls on one.
Prior to = absence while during/after = presence
The "experience" _falls_ on one as if by accident (to fall, to stumble) which indicates a lack of conscious control over the event.
4:43 One never know when he is speaking to an individual who has had, or is going to have the "experience" I'm talking about.
Knowing and speaking: All indicate a potential for unconscious understanding/knowing when interacting with individuals of this type. Whereas "One" of above can never "know", the "Many" from below can "know".
4:56 Such an individual now or later may recall what has been spoken about and may find it "immensely" helpful in [their] time of need. I know that for a fact. _Such things do happen._
This reiterates the sub-textual implication of the previous statement (@ 4:43). This is to say that (despite lacking conscious awareness of the potential for "this experience" happening in another) _there are unconscious factors within the psyche that are aware of it, and manipulate conscious speech in such a way as to assist this individual in the future experience_
Edinger's awareness of the ability as is demonstrated in the statement "I _know_ that for a fact", shows in very concise terms that he was aware of the unconscious assistance we provide for one another.
A further implication may be that not only does the "experience" _falls_ on one *from above* but that it is guided by factors _below_ one, which push one *from below* into the position where the "experience" is best suited to fall.
    E. Edinger was very careful with his words.

There are actually 3 levels of the Self. There is the ego, the personal evolving Soul, the center of which is located behind the heart (also called the True Self) , and the objective "Self" which is the person's Spirit. The Spirit is Universal and is what connects a person to everyone else, all of Reality, and the Divine. The ego's first task is to face, own, and integrate the shadow. This task alone takes decades. The next task is to open the heart (Anima). Then the Personal Evolving Soul starts to reveal itself and comes to the forefront of the Being. This is Self Realization. To integrate ones Soul with one's Spirit or Universal Self is called "God Realization". The evolving Soul gets wounded lifetime after lifetime. The shame or false self wound is very difficult to heal and integrate. Most people do not have sufficient self esteem to embody their Soul. However, ego inflation is always a pitfall and a danger. This is difficult work. Hence why they call it the Hero's Journey.

What is the source of your words? They sound true.

    • @Magik1369
      @Magik1369 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

The source of my words is my own Soul, which is Truth itself. I am awakened and individuated and have been on the path for 30 years. I started with Jung and with a Jungian analyst I worked on my dreams for years. Then I had a direct encounter with the Mysterium Tremdendum (the Divine) and this was an initiation into the path of Self Realization. Edinger says there are 2 centers and this is true prior to shadow integration. The 2 centers integrate into 1 center during the process of Self Realization. Once shame, guilt, and fear are cleared and integrated, the risk of ego inflation diminishes. We are in actuality way bigger and much more than we ever imagined. We are actually Unified beings at higher levels of actualization. My teachers include Jung, Michael Washburn, and Sri Aurobindo. I am on the integral path of embodied spirituality. One becomes a true heart centered human being and the integrated human being becomes the Self or Soul. The center behind the heart is the Self...the evolving Soul personality. The Self is a multi dimensional being that reincarnates in the Earth School of duality and opposites. The opposites create tension in the psyche. This tension serves as the impetus for the development of consciousness. If you follow Jung, you will go through a very difficult time (think Hercules cleaning the Aegean Stables or the Passion of Christ). But you will become your True Self which is the Pearl of Great Price and which is a spark of the Divine. The journey is well worth it. Peace and Best! @@kirstinstrand6292

I would think that the two selves are the unconscious and the later conscious self. We are all unconscious at birth and most of life. Only Individuation yields Consciousness.

The meeting of ego and self is described as between two men, and the examples are all men. Jung decided, on the basis only of his own prejudices, that women’s psychology was the mirror image, in some sense, of that of men, so he postulated the women’s animus versus his own experience which he accorded to all men, of men’s anima. I do not think Jung’s theory on women’s psychology will hold up, outside of beliefs based on old authority and stereotypes. To get the ball rolling, my own encounters with transpersonal entities (two, one a Eudaemon and one mind-behind typically experienced by creative people) are overwhelmingly positive, unconditional compassion over an extended period, coupled together with personal and life insight in which gender was entirely irrelevant. I think that the wounding of the ego by the self and the aggressive nature of the self, as reported here, is not a universal truth. The lack of a correct psychology for women is a huge problem in Jungian psychology.
