Great presentation of the Hilberling Martin, I remember seeing it for the first time at the Ham Radio show, 10 years ago. Glad you didn't mention the price, as if you have to ask, then you probably can't afford it 😊 73, Martin, GW3XJQ PS, thanks also Tony, for doing the on air demo.
Nice video showing this beatifull radio. Unique construction with non reflective LPF, a diplexer for every filter, derivating harmonics to an internal dummy load. Thanks!
There's a boutique brand for every interest. Ham radio is no exception. It's definitely pretty. If you want it and can afford it, I say buy it. Personally, I will stick with my Kenwoods. I doubt this system would outperform my TS-2000.
@@froeze Well built, but it's kinda outdated by now. I suppose if you want a well built German tank, that's the way to go, though. For the price, I'd do a full array of rebuilt Collins gear.
Hey, isn't this the $12K transceiver? For $12K it had better sing and dance and. ... Remember the good old days when we thought the IC-781 was an expensive rig at $6K?
Nice radio I would be happy to own a Kenwood TS990 I would love to play on a TS990 for an hour or so and a newer 880 to see which one I should go for at the end of this year
The TS-990 is now discontinued after 12 years. Almost certainly a consequence of component supply problems. The TS-890 is a lovely radio, I have one and it's a keeper.
@@BrianMorrison Brian thanks of the message Tony has also suggested the TS890 is the way to go I guess I need to save a few more pennies in the radio fund. Evan if Kenwood bring out a new flagship radio I guess it will be expensive more than the current models 73
As allways the only way to know if this is good, is by comparing it to some other transceiver(s) ... the QSO shown was not very convincing ... in addition the design is 10 years or more old ... keep in mind that a lot of advances have been made that are not available on this radio (ie: spectrum/waterfall display) ... so i i'm not convinced that it is worth the money.
looks nice. The statement of the performance isn't as good as I,K,Y could be correct but just ones opinion. Would have to A/B in person to make a comment myself. I'll just stay with Apache Labs and Thetis for now. Not the most expensive but it meets my needs and expectations.
What a strange comment to make in response to a video about radio equipment... but since you mention it, I have been on 4000iu per day for more than 2 years and when I had my vit D level checked i found that it was low. Now an on 12,000iu per day!
It's gorgeous, but it looks like the Sherwood even has the little FT-710 ahead of it on the receiver. My (not important) opinion is that this radio is more of a status symbol than a radio.
@@N4LSJHamRadio The FT-710 is about a decade newer in design than the Hilberling, it was able to make use of newer components and architecture. In some ways the performance of all these radios is more than adequate and well in excess of those we had even 20 years ago let alone 40.
@@BrianMorrison Shows just how quickly some things become obsol... I mean... "vintage." HA HA. Seriously, though. That's a main reason I don't shell out for top of the line phones, etc... In two years, the cheapies are as good as that one was.
No doubt this is a quality product. But in terms of price-performance ratio, it disappoints. Judging the block diagram, the design feels outdated. Very traditionally designed RF and IF stages, and the only DSP used in it is an AF DSP. If I compare this radio against other top-of-the line radios, the Flexradio 8400 series and the Icom IC-7851, this one loses out. The build of the Flexradio and the Icom is on par with the Hilberlink, and performance for both competing radios is actually better than the Hilberlink (in fact the Icom IC-7851 even beats the Flex I have found, despite of what Sherwood lists). Considering that both the Flexradio and the IC-7851 is (was) considerably cheaper, I feel that the PT-8000A is missing the mark. Again, the PT-8000A is a grandiose product, and Mr. Hilberlink is a very nice man (I met him on Dayton years ago), I think his radio is overpriced for what it offers. My all time favorite is really the Icom IC-7851.
There will be a buyer for it. It will be someone who has an amount of money sat in the bank, such they can buy the best of radio equipment (and other things in life) without having to consider the price as a barrier. John - M7JCZ.
@mariemccann5895 Sour? Not sure what that means. But, there is a market for all radios. The same person who buys a nice quality used radio, wont be a buyer of this radio. Just simple economics.
Personally I hate the look of the small “drop-back” display and no waterfall - looks like a 1980’s lab device screen in terms of quality. On Tony’s presentation the MIC GAIN and POWER you have to guess? I am sat here with an FT-101ZD, FTDX-10 and FTDX-5000 in my shack so I am not a bells and whistles man but that really didn't impress. Maybe I am getting too old?
An interesting video for sure…. Is it just me though, I don’t like it :o( probably a good thing as I can’t afford it. I’ll stick with my YAESU FTDX101MP
13000+pound for an HF rig and only goes to 2 meter band ??? for this amount of money I would see that is also had 70 and 23 had onboard...sorry but this rig is way overpriced..
Agreed. It’s an exquisite piece of hardware, but in typical German fashion, it’s over-engineered and overpriced. It doesn’t even seem there is a viable market for this. Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, the Japanese stuff is still the best value.
My word. I'm not sure I can afford to even receive the signal from that rig! Superb piece of equipment.

now thats that good old fashioned TRUE German engineering. what a gorgeous system
Great presentation.

I was surprised by the power output not being shown the display, surely there must be a setting for that?
That is a beautiful radio, i would love to own one...
A bit like the Studer-REVOX brand for the Amateur Radio market :)
Stunning! I want one :)
Studer - Revox and Nagra
@@G1WVK My main hobby is audio and I've got a rather nice high speed half-track B77 mk2 and it is a thing of absolute beauty.

In my next life, I'll buy one and tote it around in the trunk of my Rolls doing POTA.

German engineering, the best in the world. Their cars are great, their radio kit is superb (R&S) and now this, looks absolutely superb
