I've been collecting so long I ran out of space. I have an entire bedroom in my house devoted to video games. I built massive shelves and they're all full. As for retro I have most of what I want anyway.
I try to get physical games when i can, at least for the PS4/5 and Switch. For retro stuff, i usually resort to emulation because some of the prices are crazy. Even some of the more modern games are getting expensive, like Signalis suddenly jumped up in price, which is wild. Although i wish some companies didn't resort to Limited Run Games for physical, it just makes it harder for people to get a copy.
Digital only is a complete scam which only benefits companies. I understand people like digital however just because a select amount of people like digital doesn't mean physical gets completely removed. Options being taken away is never a good thing and again only benefits the entity removing that option.
You're completely right. I feel like instead of a console war. We're in another type of gaming battle now. Where half of the big AAA companies are trying to take possession of games away from us (Mainly the same companies who helped support microtranactions). I feel like many people who do only digital will regret it down the line. When their nostalgia for these games is starting to peak, but they will probably have no luck. We shouldn't be creating more "Lost Media content" instead enjoying the games we've always enjoyed
Digital is a scam for real. Imagine owning 200+ games but they are all digital. How do you showcase your hobbie? You don't, as ubisoft say... Get used to not owning anything.
@@HanSDevX They way companies did was so obvious, baby stepping people on to digital so they became comfortable with it making out they couldn't put the full game on disc and having to download half of it. Trying to say they cannot make a disc that holds all the data, even if that was the case, put it on 2 discs then, as long as the full game is on the physical media. It's all a scam, they save all the money and time and eventually gain complete control of people's gaming experience and we all get screwed.

I focussed on getting a full Dreamcast set like I used to have back in 2012 before I was forced to sell everything (had loads for so many more other systems too, but DC was the special one) however having got the full set, I realised there was a lot of expensive software sitting on the shelves that I was never going to really bother playing. However over the last few years, I've refocussed and decided to go after cheaper games I used to love or never got around to playing back in the day. There are still so many PS2/Xbox/PS3 and 360 games for well under £5 that are amazing.
You had me up until making a law dictating prices, I have a better idea, if a game isn't available to purchase legally then piracy shouldn't be a crime.
Yeah that's fair enough, I just wanted to reiterate that I don't think of the financial value of a game when making my purchasing decision, I only add games to the collection I have a genuine interest to one day play
Cracking video. Really echos most of my own opinions. It doesn't matter about the size of a collection, if it's yours and you enjoy it that's all that matters. Never let people dictate what you should be buying and think if you don't have something you're not a collector. I have many of the pricey games for a lot of systems and if I had paid the money they are wanting for them now I would have been burnt by that decision. Most things that are pricey are just bad when you get around to playing them. Never treat gaming as something money focused. It's meant to be fun, both the collecting journey and the playing. I also can't stand the idea of an all digital future but I guess it will save me some space in the game room since that's fast running out.
Great video, I think i'm the only one here that actually prefers digital, I cant be dealing with a room full of plastic boxes on shelves, tho I do see why people collect.
You make it sound like you lose access to those purchases when they’re removed from the store, when in reality that’s not how it works. Spec Ops was delisted to buy, not removed from libraries, I can still download the game and uninstall it as much as I want, as for any of the other games in my steam library that have been delisted over the years. Heck even PlayStation with Driveclub, same story, delisted, but I can still play it. I think “collectors” blow this digital thing well out of proportion considering I’ve never had a game taken a way from me in over 20 years I’d say it’s a non issue.
That is very true, but I think it comes down to options, the fewer options we have as gamers, the easier it is for some company to form a monopoly. For people who don't buy games physically and only buy games digitally, other than piracy, there is no legal way for them to experience games which have been delisted from digital stores.
A great example of this was the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster. When it first released PS4 copies were going for almost $600 CAD on Ebay. They reprinted the game and the prices have plummeted.
We went from physically owning a game to digitally renting them via game pass, Nintendo online and PS plus premium if this is how we gonna play retro games in the future than the future is a grim one 😓
@@thecollectorsquest It's already happening the other day I was feeling nostalgic to play some PS2 JRPGs and looking online they now cost over 100 dollars minimum, I'm glad I had my current collection when I did but it also made me regret passing up on a few games because I thought they were over price at the time 😓
I’ve been collecting video games for mainly games I am interested in like for example JRPGs. I have a lot of those games that I would collect and also play theses games in the future.

It's crazy how many people are starting to wake up to the digital only "convenience" scam. I've been trying to tell people this since the days of the Xbox 360 when I had games just stop working because they were removed from the digital store.
If your buying retro games for PS2, PS3, XBOX 360 Nintendo DS to name a few.. The last 12 months have seen the prices on these plummet in general to around 3 pound each.($6 AU.) here in Aus. The exceptions are the rarer titles, the Silent Hills, Lost in the Rain, The Lollipop Chainsaws, etc which continue to increase in value but in general you can pick up tons of games for around $5 AU each. Now im not talking about EBay so much, but FB Marketplace and Thrift stores are near giving games away (and im not talking about old copies of FIFA either) but quality titles just not rare. At least in Australia the trend seems to be rare games continuing a slow increase while anything not rare is getting to the point where thell get to $2 each, following a similar fate to DVD and Blu Rays.I do agree with what you said about collecting things that have meaning to you, not what someone else thinks, a good tip for collecting in general. Cheers P.
I have the same opinion. I'm not paying for a revokable license to use something. For modern games, If I ever need a modern console for some must play exclusive e.g. GTA 6, I'll only be buying physical. However, I'm equally unhappy at the space physical games take up when you have a lot of consoles like I do. With hacked consoles I can store the games digitally so I'll always have access and no physical space is taken up. Everything I have can play ISOs/PKGs now (switch, ps vita, 3ds, xbox, ps2, ps3, ps4) so I've sold off all my retro games.
Yeah the space is the biggest barrier for having a physical collection, I get that digital is more convenient, but I hate games not having physical versions as some people don't have the Internet to download digital games
I would take what some TH-cam people recommend to invest in with a pinch of salt. People who invest in games would have very little knowledge of actual investing. Better ways to spend money.
Yeah, even take what I say with a pinch of salt, it's good to get different perspectives and a lot of the collectors on TH-cam I watch for pure entertainment, I don't really pay attention to what they are actually picking up for their collection as it doesn't align with my collecting goals
I m all for physical. However when the physical game is 100$+ but if the digital is on sale for the complete gold edition for under 15$ hell yeah digital wins. resellers lose.
I agree with you. I dislike the way modern physical games are just checks to see if you own the game and then download it from the internet. Also the way a lot of games don't even get a physical release annoys me. I've probably got less than 100 games but they are all great games I really like. I can understand why people would view games as an investment but as you said in the video we don't know how remakes/remasters/finding old stock would change the price.
Uff i can tell you there are at least 3 people who are in my local carboot they look to buy the cheap games and than sell em again for higher profit. With how expensive some games are getting these days, You got to do what u can and i try to never pay more than it is worth either cib or preferable lower so i wont contribute to the price hike.
Yeah I have built a lot of my collection this way by buying stuff from car boots and trading them into CEX for vouchers. But it definitely impacts the retro game market
Or you could just...you know...buy console with jailbrake, with all the desirable titles on it. Or use torrent. Bcs disc is gonna be expensive as hell. I once thought about purchasing a nintendo 64 to play some games, and then I saw how much I would pay for a single game. Since it was too much i turned to emulation and it is a blast. All titles from retro consoles from NES to PS1 in my pocket. Almost all of them ofc, but you can always just upload it to your device. And with ps3\xbox360 games I think it is the same. Im just going to emulate, or buy pirate console, or play pc release of this game from GOG or torrent. Sony already releasing many of their games on PC so even if they are all will suddenly disappear from all digital stores - you can always find its pirated copies to enjoy it indefinitely.
