    Cultural Montage
For my piece I wanted to capture the culture of roads in smaller cities around the time of 2-4 am. It's not often that I get to experience the world like this, but I do love the eerie etherealness of it. The places where you're used to sitting in traffic for 20 minutes are completely empty and the lights are blinking. I think blinking lights are the biggest indicator that I'm in those twilight zone hours, it's so satisfying just going through lights and super annoying to stop at nothing, but the air feels different and the sounds are special and it's just, idk how to describe it. You feel alone, it feels forbidden to be not only awake but outside and roaming at this time of night. When you don't see anyone else it's like you don't even exist.
Basically that's all context for why I chose that culture to focus on. It's a time that I wanted to draw attention to. I tried to have this piece be a mixture of everything I feel at those hours, beautiful peace and calmness where you don't have to worry about anything but going home, but also tension and creepiness because being alone outside in the middle of the night as a female you're obligated to be aware of kidnappers and stuff. There's a horror element to it because of that anxiety, but also there's a peaceful element.
Blinking lights are also a large part of this piece because, as I said before, that's what signals to me that I'm in that twilight zone. I tried to get footage of both the lights themselves and the lights reflection off of the environment. I also wanted to keep the sound within the confines of what you would actually hear since the audio component of this time of night is equally if not more important than how it actually looks. I used silence a lot to accent the sound and hopefully make the viewer more aware and paying closer attention to what they're hearing. I used the sound from under a highway bridge to add more of that creepy element, I live right next to that highway and I love hearing those sounds from a distance, and the noise from under that bridge is super loud and kinda terrifying, but also really cool.
I ran into a little bit of complications, because since I could only record super early in the morning I had a hard time planning taping days since I had things during the day that would keep me from capturing anything most days, but I ended up fitting it in haha. It did cause me to be very tired but I think it was worth it. Also a problem with recording that late is you look/feel super suspicious. I only got stopped by a cop once thankfully and it was just a "I'm a film student that's why I'm out here" and they left but I was constantly anxious I would be pulled over and questioned about why I was out. The clip that had the cop car in it, that was the cop that questioned me haha.
