It was a great time to be a kid watching Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica alongside syndicated Star Trek. TNG, DS9, and Voyager paired well with Sliders, Babylon-5, Stargate SG-1, and Andromeda. I enjoy many sci-fis for what they share as well as what makes them unique.

Sci-Fi Fans: DS9 or B5? Me: Why not both?
I'm glad SeaQuest DSV got a mention. Yeah it got weird after season 1, but the whole thing is worth watching at least once since it takes place 2018-2019 its fun to look back and see what writers thought the "near future" in the 90's and compare it today. I always liked the little minute plug at the end while the credits rolled that talked about how the episode related to real life events.

Yeah, I really have to say the guy from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute did a fantastic job, especially when it started going into the aliens BS. He really did a great job finding something scientific (not aliens) to talk about. I believe that, he too, asked to stop doing those spots after the change in creative direction.

@P A Yes...but that was only at first. The Orville gradually toned down the silly comedy and gradually brought serious science fiction and gravitas to the show. I find a subtle bit of irony with Buck Rogers and Sliders. 1 is that Voyager would go onto take inspiration from Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon when it comes to Harry and Tom's holodeck programs. Sliders is mostly because Jerry O'Connell of course would go on to be Ransom but I also feel it's a way of things coming around full circle since his Stand By Me co-star Wil Wheaton was also a Star Trek alumni.

Also, I'm surprised that you chose Space Precinct as the Anderson production like Star Trek since Space:1999 was always described as "weak" Star Trek (I liked it).

The Orville is like if TNG cast/characters were allowed to crack jokes once in a while and not be so serious.

You could take out Buck Rogers and Sliders and add Farscape and Dark Matter, and the list would still be valid.

the man even said it in the video , sliders really took more inspiration from Quantum leap than it took from Star Trek. I mean seriously shows lower on his list had more ties to trek than sliders did. Just because the show is sci-fi doesn't mean it's trying to be trek or want's to be trek.

I asked a Trekkie friend if he had seen The Orville. He asked what it was.
I said "Imagine Star Trek TNG, except I was on the writing staff".
    He fully understood.

Most of those shows used ideas from sci-fi in general that pre-date Star Trek. Oh and the Federation in Buck Roger pre-dates Star Trek by decades. It was in the comic strips.

I totally disagree with Sliders being like Star Trek. Like you said its more like Quantum Leap. execpt that they dont really seek out to help others they do it when the opportunity presents itself.

How did Slider mimic Voyager when they both came out in 1995? Plus no ship or space. Sliders is way more akin to Quantum Leap.
