    I recognise people's objections about "every time Raya trusts, she gets stabbed in the back" and the flawed logic perpetuated in "keep trusting, even if people keep hurting you."
    And while I agree that this message could've/should've been handled better, we DO see quite a few instances of Raya trusting people ending with better results. All the people who join her band: the kid captain, the con baby, and the Spine warrior. Raya starts off neutral with the kid, and rocky with the baby and the Spine warrior. But all of them eventually join her to help fix the world, in spite of their opposing nations and original personal agendas.
    I think they DID show the positive results of Raya trusting people, but since it was done so subtly, in a more "show, don't tell" way, I think a lot of people missed it.

    One of the nuances few people seem to get; the breaking of the world was technically BOTH of their faults. One of the many reasons I enjoy this movie despite its weaknesses is that the protagonists/antagonists are not black-and-white

    • @Ikajo
      @Ikajo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'd even say a lot of fault lies with Namaari's mother. Namaari was just a kid doing as she was told, raised in a certain way. Her mother more or less just used her to get what she wanted.

      I just finished this movie and I agree with you. I had my doubts about this movie. I thought "Here we go....another stupid Disney movie just to make money" MAN, was I wrong. This movie was GORGEOUS and it FELT like a creatively done, magical Disney movie. It had emotion. It had STUNNING animation. I liked that they not only portrayed Raya as an Asian princess, but they made her a strong, beautiful warrior and not just a weak, whiny damsel in distress. It was definitely worth the $30 I spent on it. I liked the creativity they used when portraying the Dragons and giving them each a unique power. It was beautiful.

    Thank you for understanding Namaari's side. Everyone is like "Namaari isn't taking responsibility for her actions and gaslighting Raya!" No. Namaari knows they're at fault for the gem breaking, though she tried to steal it because her people were in bad shape when she was a kid(and she didn't get that firework and Fang soldiers from nowhere, so most likely her mother put her up to it.) It wasn't that Raya had to totally forget and forgive what Namaari had done, but give her the benefit of the doubt.

    I'm glad to see someone like this movie. I feel a lot of people oversimplify the intended message and think it's just about blind trust, when really it's much more complex. There are notes about redemption, don't abuse the trust of others, and that there are problems bigger than the distrust of individuals. There's also lessons about forgiveness, and understanding. And then there is a lesson in there that sometimes you have to be the bigger person and step up, distrust is a viscous cycle, and SOMEONE has to break it. In this case, it had to Raya. :)

    • @lulub517
      @lulub517 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For real. People take things way too literally and nitpick things way too much. Like in what way does the movie convey to trust blindly when it shows both sides of the trust spectrum (Raya and Sisu) being one who doesn’t trust at all and one who trusts too easily, it’s obvious that the idea is to not take people for granted to work as a team when push comes to shove. Someone has to take the first step to make a change.

    It would be up to mankind to take care of themselves and the World, by spreading Faith and Trust.
    But you know, Disney being Disney...
    Great video, man

    This movie genuinely surprised me with how good it was. I was NOT expecting to like Sisu as much as I did. The animation was breathtaking, the story was REFRESHINGLY creative and unique.....unlike the slog of remakes and sequels we've been getting from Disney lately. This felt like a true Disney movie with no mother, and a little bit of magic and sincere emotion and humor. It was beautiful.....and well-worth the $30 my 4 yr old nephew had me pay for it. lol
    On THAT note....I would highly recommend you react to the Blind Side if you haven't yet. Another beautiful story. One of Sandra Bullock' BEST in my humble opinion.

    Kinda off topic but through out my whole life I've been asked if I'm Asian. I'm Hispanic. 😂 I do have Asian genes, like 1% but I do look different from my other family members that have light hair and/or big round eyes. The only people who didn't say I look Asian or mistake me for Asian were my two youngest sisters. 4 and 6 year old. The moment they saw the trailer to this film they said "Raya is my favorite princess because she looks like you!"........ At this point I accepted the fact that my 1% Asian gene is strong. 😆

    As much as I like this movie, I think it could’ve and would’ve been a lot better as a tv series. For me at least no matter how well a movie’s story is executed, 9 times outta 10 it’ll end to quickly because generally a movie’s passing is pretty fast. With a series how ever, you have multiple seasons filled with multiple episodes to really get to know the premise, world and characters in it and you’re given plenty of time to grow attached to them.

    I feel like this movie's story of trust could've been a lot better if they had done better at writing Namari's character. While I love that they showed how she and Raya agreed in their ideas of bringing back the pieces in contrast to her mother and the pressure that caused her, the fact that our first introduction to her character is her WILLINGLY AND READILY JUST BETRAYING RAYA LIKE THAT FOR THE SAKE OF HER TRIBE AND HER TRIBE ONLY is infuriating. And it just contradicts the idea that this character deserves a chance. And while I get that she and Raya having a rivalry is a cool story idea, it would've been a lot more effective if the extent of their relationship was not just meeting ONCE and then IMMEDIATE BETRAYAL. I love the rest of the story, but Namari's character as a sympathetic villain getting a redemption arc could have used a lot more work.

    I love this movie but at the same time, I'm a little concerned how some kids might take on this message. Namaari is the cause for Raya's trauma and not once did she apolor for it. Instead, Raya is expected to just forgive and trust her again. Worst case scenario, kids in bad situations that have experienced abuse will see this as "I have to forgive and trust my abuser because that's my responsibility", which is in no way how it works.

    • @lilyl3470
      @lilyl3470 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To me, they completely messed up with the message. Kids, do not put so much trust on someone you just met that day for god's sake 😑
      Raya learns nothing in this movie, at the end they are just back to the start (which proved to be a bad idea already). You can bet after that, somebody else betrayed both Raya and Namari, because that's how the world is. The message should have been "Do not trust blindly" and not "Trust everyone and keep giving second chances".
      Zootopia nailed that nuance, Raya went stright for black or white.

    what annoys me about the message of this movie is that Raya's arc was basically a circle. If the talks at the beginning of the movie worked they would be in the same place as at the movie's actual ending. Raya's dad said give trust a shot, Raya did and then the apocalypse started. Raya's refusal to trust wasn't paranoia; it was a learned behavior and a response to betrayal and trauma. Sisu trusts and instead of that paying off and getting the talon gem or some other victory she gets betrayed needs a rescue and then continues on like it never happened. Sisu's insistence on trust comes off less optimistic belief in the good of humanity and more a refusal to learn from your mistakes. We see trust rewarded on-screen once at the very end of the movie, every other time someone trusts they wind up the worse for it.
    Sorry, this got long. TL;DR the movie's message would work better if it showed trust work more than once or at least blowing up less.
    There are also several plot holes but let's not get into that

    • @lilyl3470
      @lilyl3470 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeeees thank you! I was like, movie, you want to prove me trust is worth it, then maybe... show it to me? Like at the end they all supposely "trust" Namari and give her the pieces. But they are caught up in the fog anyway, it's this or waiting to die. When you've got literally nothing to lose anymore, your great act of trust is a lot less impactful 😑
      Also everytime they trusted someone, they got betrayed ; the humor fell flat ; the scenario is a video game quest ; the vilain is not explained or given a backstory, just "bad humans = bad fog" ; so much time is lost introducing each Sisu sibling and we never actually meet them ; Sisu's powers are presented and then never used again ; at the end, we are back to the begining and Raya learned nothing.
      Can you tell I was very disappointed by this movie ? 🙃
