Yep, and what makes it worse is cat's don't tear things up unless they are bored/neglected. It's not like a puppy going through a chewing stage that's unavoidable, though I find dogs are destructive for the same reasons otherwise. If you have an indoor cat which is best for the cat and wildlife, just accept they are going to need 10 minutes of play every day, scratch post, fresh toy every few months and a couple good windows to watch birds. Also having two cats can also save them a lot of boredom.

@@codetron1.1 you realise the cats literally destroyed your dad's stuff because he very likely didn't have anything for them to scratch, right? A cat scratches for health reasons, exercises their muscles and keeps the claws filed down, it's people with shitty 6 inch tall scratch poles that get their stuff torn up, that's why Ana mentioned it being avoidable because it is, you give them a more desirable sized scratch pole (typically not just one) and put it next to furniture and they'll use it because it gives them a better full scratch, like imagine one as tall as the cat is in length factoring in their body length and both their front and back legs fully stretch, that's a proper height for a scratch pole.. Plus, uhh fyi some cats have literally almost died saving their owners, they can also be trained, so both those facts make them similar to dogs as well, it just depends on the cat just like it depends on the dog. It is because some dog and cat breeds are more independent while others more cuddly even considered lap animals. Oh, and on the declawing point if anyone didn't know it is surgery of the first digit on every toe, and also risks and typically causes a cat to be more aggressive and dangerous and have a greater risk to their life, as for example in the fostering world if a cat scratches you it's fine, but if they bite it typically has to be called in, which eventually can lead to them being put down for being dangerous. And all it comes from is people being lazy or cheap on their cat stuff (Which literally can be DIYed from scrap materials and cheap stuff like basic carpeting or rugs and PVC or spare wood), and instead going to the length of taking away one of their cats ways to defend itself.
