  • Alex Albon has been in strong form throughout the 2023 F1 season. Albon has managed to make his mark so far but since joining Williams, he has proven to everybody why he was in Formula 1 to begin with. If Albon can continue with this positive momentum and consistency, he will continue to win over more and more fans. What does the future hold for Alex Albon? Could we see him race for a top team in the future? Enjoy!

      Agreed. But after Canada we all know what Christian Horner was talking about when he congratulated Alex's race. As much as we love seeing Alex bringing the worst car up the grid, the reality is he is Thai, and Red Bull is a Thai product, his big sponsor is Monsoon valley which is owned by the son of the Red Bull owner. Red Bull as a team is about personalities and everyone in the team likes Alex, whereas Pierre Gasly and now Nyck DeVries who don't gel with the team will never get that seat.

    He really didnt get the same opportunity that Russell and Norris, or even Verstappen, he got moved up to a top team in his first year of F1. He didn't really get the chance to make silly mistakes or to grow. I'm glad he's getting that opportunity now.

      Despite that his first season(both Toro Rosso and RB) was pretty damn good for a rookie who was called in on short notice to fill both seats.
      The talent is there and RBR knows it. What he needed was more time and most importantly a car that isn't a wild bull let loose on track.

    I think Albons (and Gaslys) biggest problems in RedBull was RedBull and being up against Verstappen. He is arguably one of the tallest benchmarks we've seen and RedBulls driver philosofy does make it a rough environment to thrive in if your personality isn't a good match for that.

    • @junsengjs
      @junsengjs ปีที่แล้ว +10

      If his 2019 record is anything to go by, he did pretty well. With more time in the team to gain experience and hone his skills he'd be great.
      The problem was that the 2020 RB was an unwieldy beast that even Max struggled to rein in at times. If Max struggles with that, then any other person would have an extremely difficult time.

    • @paperplane-db8qf

      Alex outscored Max from Belgium to Brazil in 2019 in his rookie season in a car with no testing that Verstappen had been driving the whole season.
      If Redbull didn’t build a car to completely suit Verstappens style in 2020 then Albon could’ve possibly even beaten Max.

    • @junsengjs
      @junsengjs ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@paperplane-db8qf RB did admit that they got the RB16 wrong though, Max has an extraordinary ability to compensate for the flaws of the car, and they misjudged whether the RB16 was drivable for a normal human because of how well Max was driving it. Unfortunately it was not drivable for anyone that isn't a monster like Max. They realised that midway through 2020 and worked to fix it. Note how the RB16 got better for Albon towards the tail end of 2020(Albon eventually finished Abu Dhabi 2020 in P4).
      In 2021, Alpha Tauri which traditionally took parts from the previous year's RB(the gearbox and such) refused to take the rear parts of the 2020 RB, citing that they know those parts are a bad idea. Also in 2021, RB had Albon providing feedback during development and the RB16B turned out to be the championship fighting car it is.
      I think if the 2020 car wasn't undrivable, Albon would have been the perfect #2 driver for RB. Very similar driving preferences to Max, fast, good racecraft. Hell he might even end up challenging Max properly if he had a few years in.

  • @junsengjs

    His 2019 results was pretty damn good especially when you know that he was called up on short notice to both Toro Rosso and later Red Bull. Man got called up to go into the Toro Rosso while he was already fully committed to going to FE, then halfway through his Toro Rosso season he was called up to jump into the RB seat. His first year was a season of him being called up on short notice to fill a seat that he wasn't expecting nor was he preparing for. If anything, he did a pretty decent run in 2019 and showed that he has the talent.
    However the 2020 RB was an unwieldy beast that even Max couldn't rein in at times(they even admitted they developed the car in the wrong direction), and Albon just didn't have the experience to rein in the car to perform. 2020 crushed him and the media constantly bashing him didn't help.
    Good part of all of that is probably RBR realising that his poor form in 2020 was not because he didn't have the talent but rather he was struggling with the car, during his season away he didn't let him losing the seat get to him, showed his own tenacity and did what he could to contribute to the team, and in return the team supported him in his search for a seat. When Mercedes attempted to block him entering Williams, RBR gladly let him go if it means that he will get a seat. They separated on good terms, and I won't be surprised if he returns to RB one day.
    To all the haters, if he didn't have the talent then what the hell was his 2019 season?

    I can't believe I'd ever agree with such a statement in recent years, but I agree that moving to Williams has been good for him. I've honestly never cared much for him as a driver but being at a team like Williams does have a minor upside for an actually good driver: you sometimes get to really demonstrate what you can do, and it's all the more impressive because you've done it in a Williams. (My how the times have changed!)
    Seriously though, he's impressed me a LOT this year, and I'm still no stan or anything, but I enjoy a team like Williams having some fight and some hope and making improvements, and a lot of this would be impossible without a driver of his caliber. I think people forget far too easily that these drivers are among the very best in the world and that they wouldn't have even gotten into F1 had it not been for that fact (well... Latifi and Mazepin aside). People are also far too quick to forget that even World Champions make mistakes sometimes. That's part of what makes competition so much fun.
    I guess that's why I'm glad that Albon is still driving for Williams: because it gives us the opportunity to appreciate his driving despite the fact that the car is mostly a turd. Indeed, a lot of other drivers have a similar opportunity but have failed to capitalize on it.

    Albon did well when first promoted up to Red Bull (Hamilton's take out notwithstanding). Second year he was in a high pressure situation that he had enough time in F1 to handle. So the following year he spent the season as a backup driver for RBR, and getting a Master Class in how a top tier team works from data analysis to car setup to logistics to driver and mechanic management.
    Then he went to Williams, long past its heyday. He quickly made himself at home, worked thru rebuilding the team, and becoming lead driver.
    Now Williams is Albon's team. It's financially secure, hiring talented people, and showing great improvement.
    Why would he go anywhere else to play second fiddle?
    Bringing Williams back to the top of the midfield is easy to see. Bringing Williams back to the top tier with podiums and wins is not a stretch.
    And Albon would be forever the face of Williams as the driver who brought them back.

    His time in Williams was what he needed when he was in Toro Rosso. It was premature moving him to RBR and while he could still sometimes deliver, its like pulling a butterfly out of its cocoon prematurely. It was the only move RBR could do at the time and they knew it was a mistake with Alex as a possible collateral but they took the gamble on him because i feel that is how much they trusted in his abilities. Yet, being in F1 is cutthroat, even more so being in a top team so they had to cut him off for the sake of the entire team but they bent over backwards to help keep him in the paddock by putting him in the sim, helping out for 2021, then later orchestrated his move into Williams, thus securing his future. Even now, Horner still has eyes on Alex and RB is on his helmet so you know theyre still backing him. I potentially see Alex back in RBR next to Max when Checo decides to call it a day. Everyone in the paddock knows Albono's quality.
    Saying all this as a Leclerc and Tsunoda fan, too.

    Alex has been the most consistent driver so far this season. He only goes either the same place every weekend or higher than his former place in qualifying and races. Even Checo could not get the same consistency as Albon but Checo's got a better machine.

    Getting away from Red Bull was such a smart move for him, he's the number one at Williams, the team loves him and he's not none of the stress of what seems to be a Toxic kind of hell that is Red Bull for anyone not called Max. He likely has a seat at Williams for as many years as he wants and while probably never going to be challenging for the title, they seem to be moving forward towards being in the midfield.

    I have a new conspiracy theory for you. Possibly one to explore for a video and see how wild it can run. Think about the the recent new changed in the Cost cap hitting the top teams hard (work subsidiaries do for the teams is now included in cost cap). Then add in how Red Bull already faces penalties for breaching the cost cap and will have the least R&D time (assuming they come in 1st in the constructors). Are they reshaping the infrastructure of Alphatauri in order to use their R&D time, wind tunnel, etc in order to further gain an advantage over the rest of the field during the cost cap era? I mean they are the only team that could do it, and think about what RB could do with double the cost cap Merc Ferrari and Aston will have. Seems very weird these changes to the cost cap happen and in the same week Helmut is talking about changing up Alphatauri. I mean we all know they been struggling but the timing shouldn’t be overlooked imo. Hope you see this
