Noam Chomsky on Trump: "The Other Candidates are Not That Different"

  • Democracynow.org - Noam Chomsky weighed in on U.S. presidential politics in a speech Saturday at The New School in New York. In addressing a question about Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, Chomsky assessed the political landscape: "Today’s Democrats are what used to be called moderate Republicans. The Republicans have just drifted off the spectrum. They’re so committed to extreme wealth and power that they cannot get votes ... So what has happened is that they’ve mobilized sectors of the population that have been around for a long time. ... Trump may be comic relief, but it’s not that different from the mainstream, which I think is more important."

This man can talk about some of the worst things there are in our world today, but he still makes me feel compassion and makes me want to get up and do something to fight against injustice. Noam Chomsky is the greatest man I know of.

+earl klugh When you are a professor employed by MIT for 60+ years and given the media attention that Chomsky has received, you are hardly a "private citizen". He is a gatekeeper. The UN pays him to keep up the globalist agenda.

wrong when he spoke he represented no organized entity, no university faculty, just his capacity as an intellectual individual which the palestinian people in particular wanted to hear. UN pays him? gatekeeper? globalist agenda?where the hell did you pull that crap from ? it would be helpful to reveal your sources with this intel you have, i'll be waiting for your accurate insightful knowledge. peace

What worries me is who is going to take Mr.Chomsky's place after he's gone.
Right now, I don't see anyone in this world capable of matching this man's intellect.
May he be blessed with health & long life.

+az khan Who takes over for Noam? How about everyone... by being informed and seeking the truth instead of listening to the lies being distributed by the media. If you really want to find out whats going on in the real world, don't wait to see it on fox news. Make friends around the globe and start getting news and views from the source.

Curious what Chomsky has to say about Trump? Don't bother watching the video -- I've watched it for you. What Chomsky has to say about Trump is almost completely contained in the video title. ALL he has to say about Trump can be heard from times 15:05 - 15:27 and 18:22 - 18:27. Give me a like for saving you time; or at least give a like in support of honesty in video titles.

    • @JamLeGull

Jonathan Andrew 'Clown' was the insult. Calling Trump a know-nothing is a comparison between his politics and that of a political movement called the 'know-nothings' which was basically a nineteenth century version of the tea party, who were very open about their rejection of facts and learning, hence the name.

I think Paul Krugmen made a great point when he stated "...Yet racial hatred is still a potent force in our society, as we’ve just been reminded to our horror. And I’m sorry to say this, but the racial divide is still a defining feature of our political economy, the reason America is unique among advanced nations in its harsh treatment of the less fortunate and its willingness to tolerate unnecessary suffering among its citizens."

    • @Daymjo

+The Walking Flier Really? Immigrants are the problem? What kind of insults do Americans endure from new arrivals?
Your systems are strained, that doesn't mean anything, eXcept that your political class, which are all white Americans (yes, Obama falls under that category despite his skin color) are morally and politically bankrupt.
Your resources are diminishing fast? Not really... I mean they've been diminishing for decades but the US economy has been largely thriving. Your neo-colonialist approach to governing the world is ensuring that you'll stay the richest country in the world. And you have the audacity to deny a handful of the people whose countries you've robbed blind to live in your society?
Empires collapse because of diversity? What a load of utter rubbish. If anything, the likely causes for the collapse of empires are “declining moral values and political civility at home, an overconfident and overextended military in foreign lands and fiscal irresponsibility by the central government” as outlined by the former comptroller of the US, David Walker.
Diversity is a shared feature of empires, yes, because empires are BY DEFINITION diverse in culture, that's what an empire is. But none of the empires has dissolved due to diversity, and the recent eXamples that spring to mind, such as Russia, Netherlands, Britain and France, are quite eloquent.

    Here's a precis for you:
Noam says the USA enmity to Iran and fuss about Iran nukes is only a smokescreen for the USA and Israel's desire to have no one in the neighbourhood that might hinder their ability to exercise force, make war, do whatever they like whenever they like in the Middle East.
He points out all the nominal reasons for fearing Iran being a nuclear state are ridiculous.
He points out Iran's military budget is a fraction of that of the Gulf States.
He points out that Iran is simply seeking a deterrent against those who may be tempted to harm them. Even an American General said he'd do the same thing, want the same thing, if he were Irani.
And on the way there he points out something even more dramatic and potentially fearsome:
Pakistan and its nuclear arsenal and its nuclear position.
It is not part of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (nor is Israel).
It recognises a threat from radical Muslims (Daesh etc.) and has a nuclear 'protection' force of some 20,000 men who are there to protect Pakistan's nuclear weapons.
    All, of course, Muslim.
Can you see a potential danger there?
I can. I can surmise we could be nuked any time and that nuking could set off WWIII if the USA and Russia thought it was because of the other.
    That's what Noam says.

This title is very misleading... You would think they were interviewing him but instead they're just showing Noam Chomsky's speech. And he didn't talk about Trump at all in it!

My "thumbs up" is more for the the talking points concerning Iran and nuclear weapons than the "Trumpet" segment. Trump and most of his minions don't have the intellect to understand what Chomsky says. However, NC is correct in his analysis that the rest of the crowd on the Right are pretty much like Trumpet, just different hair styles! LOL

Noam comment regarding the Killing the Affordable Care Act as not being part of a political party is actually a very good example of something that political parties should be talking about. Its very legitimacy/legality is challenged and a whole lot of voting citizens are unhappy with it. It's not that we don't want Affordable Health Care, it's just that what was rammed down our throats was a lie. The legislation doesn't bring about true affordable health care. It simply mandates that everyone has to have health insurance.
We need true affordable health care and the Affordable Care Act as written, won't accomplish this. Congress can't even get health care providers to implement the law as it was written.
The only ways to get affordable anything is to create capacity in excess of demand as in a true free market or implement price controls. If the American people were smart, they would be cranking out technology, doctors, nurses, clinics, dentists, clinics, and hospitals. Not sending money to the insurance companies which creates nothing but increased demand for already limited services.

    • @domreidman

because Russia is as imperialistic as any other country. Crimeia, Ukraine, Syria. If he is gonna call people out then be consistent.

      Dom Reidman
Last time I checked Chomsky was living in the US and not in Russia. He's critizising the community he is living in. And that's the right thing. Unlike most politicians who are just pointing fingers at everybody else.
And just fyi, there was a democratic referendum at the Crimea and the crisis in the Ukraine was caused by US intervention. Look up Victoria Nyland ... American exceptionalism at its best.
