"Even simply brushing clothes with someone is fate" (옷깃만 스쳐도 인연) is an old Korean proverb that means every interaction between you and another person-even a stranger on the street-is never an accident, but rather the elaborate result of your past lives and theirs intertwining to make that momentary interaction happen. And if even the most seemingly trivial of interactions are the result of elaborate workings of fate (인연), then something as significant as meeting the love of your life is the result of 8000 겁 of fate. This is a commonly known Buddhist teaching. 겁 (Gup) is a measurement of time. Imagine a massive boulder, and imagine that a single raindrop falls on that boulder once every 1000 years. The amount of time it would take for the boulder to finally crack from the water droplets is 1 겁. A single 겁 is an unfathomably long period of time, so 8000 겁 is something that's hard to even attempt to imagine. The saying goes that for every married couple, there's at least 8000 겁 of 인연 (fate) from their past lives that led them to each other.

I believe that In-Yun has its roots in Chinese, specifically in the words "因缘" or "姻缘," both of which mean fate. The latter emphasizes its romantic aspect, and they are both pronounced "Inn-Yuen." I always love the similarities among Eastern Asian cultures. There is a concept in Chinese similar to what you mentioned that states, "前世五百次的回眸,换来今世的一次擦肩而过," which means "Glimpse but once, a past life's glance. Five hundred times, to find the chance, To cross paths with one from before, In this life, and forevermore.". Or "十世修来同船渡,百世修来共枕眠", meaning "Ten lives of good deeds earn a shared boat ride. A hundred more, a shared pillow at your side.".

Hey, I'm from South Korea and I can relate to this trailer... Almost same thing happened to me recently. Around 17 years ago, when I was in elementary, I met a boy whose name was "Present" in Korean. He was my first crush. I liked his shiny round eyes, a cute wide smile, and white teeth. Sadly, I had to move to another school a year later. 18 years passed, and we met each other this January. We have become both 25. He studies in medical school and I just came back to S.Korea after obtaining a diploma from another country. I didn't know he had been reading all my posts on my public diary for a few months when I was back in France. Though he knew the one who was writing the diary was me, he never said "Hi" to me. Then one day I deleted a link that had access to my public diary, so he missed a chance to let me know.
A few years passed, and he noticed one comment in the comment section of one youtube video which showed a whole view of our hometown where we used to play together. That comment was, surprisingly, written by me. He noticed that it was me because I wrote down some of my personal background in the comment. He already knew I was living in France and I had a very special surname that stood out.
So we met each other once again through TH-cam and we talked hours and hours on social media. We finally met each other this January and we had a nice Italian lunch, drank coffee and talked for hours and hours... I think we had a nice time.
We are not together tho. Maybe it was because of a bad timing or maybe because I've been having some issues with my mentality and physical health or maybe because he was in senior year at medical school...or maybe because I seemed such a deep person to him. BUT the important thing is, I have a feeling that we are still connected and one day we will see each other once again at right time and a right place.
Magic happens to those who believe in magic :)
Anyways, thank you for reading my magical story💛

And then after Nora told him she loved him and his response of "it's just that sometimes I find that hard to believe" That killed me. Many viewers, myself included, found ourselves rooting for Nora and Hae to end up together yet feeling very sad for Arthur aswell. None of it it's his fault. Also his exhale and sad expression when first meeting Hae and seeing him standing next to his wife Nora.

Why didn't they cast a really average looking korean guy if this is about chemistry and deep intimacy? Celine Song basically turning it into a romance novel for women, korean style.

I think it’s sad that if you hold a love for someone who’s played an important part in your life would mean that you don’t actually love the person who’s important to you now and have chosen to spend the rest of your life with. @@Percules0001 You can love more than one person in your life. Love itself can also change overtime, such as from romantic to platonic. There’s a reason why some people are still best friends with people they’ve dated before, long after breaking up. Then again, relationships are different for everyone and only the people in said relationship know how it’s currently going and how it’ll move forward. I feel like I’m stating the obvious, but just because someone hangs out with someone they aren’t dating doesn’t mean that they’re cheating. I haven’t seen the movie yet, and there’s a non-zero chance I’m wrong and you’re completely right, but idk man I could absolutely be misinterpreting, but something about your comment just seems way off. I do get what you’re saying though, but know in real life it’s very much circumstantial.

Many people in the cinema wiped their tears (me too). The emotion of love literally skyrockets at the very end of the film. Although I live in Slovenia, which is on the other side of the world, the emotion of love, and the language between two hearts, seems to be exactly the same, everywhere.

I just finished watching this movie, and it made me bawl my eyes out like a baby. Not because it counted on big, dramatic scenes but on all those little in-betweens that we all have in our lives, those moments where we are out of words, those in which we want to say something but can't and those where we say something different from what we want to. It was so emotionally charged, it made me feel deeply for- and with them and most of all, it left me thinking and feeling and also aching.

Reconnected with my love after almost 10 years apart this past fall in NYC (I’m thirty). Coincidentally, the first time we saw each other we also ended up in Brooklyn and took pictures in the same places they are taking pictures in the movie with the bridge in the background.
Circumstances took her across the world. I always knew she was the one and on starry nights, red sunsets, during milestones and in silent moments of reflection, I would wonder if I was still in her heart as she was in mine.
When we finally met up, I remember gazing into her eyes for hours searching for answers, we said so much to each other without saying a single word. Turns out, I have been in her heart as much as she’s been in mine.
3 months later this past January I travelled to meet her family. We’re hoping to get engaged mid year and planning a wedding for early 2024. Timing is everything and in our hearts and in our core, we always hoped to be each others forevers.

Worked this young lady for a 12 hr shift on an ambulance and we had a connection that I've never experienced.
I looked for her for 6 months after that shift and one day I walked into work and there she was. Our relationship lasted almost a year and just like that it was over. Many years later I've come to realize she was the one that got away. Just like in the movie, she is married now and lives in the Northeastern part of the states. I miss her dearly and the love we had. I often wonder if I will ever find someone that I will love on that level again. Perhaps in my next life I will meet the love of my life again. Maybe then it will be a different outcome.

An emotionally intelligent film. Throughout the movie I couldn't help but try to understand the underpinning theme of the story. One thing is true though, that it is deeply human to find, at some point in our lives, pragmatism and the ideals of our youth, warring within us. The two are in desperate conflict with each other. Each having their own set of goals, determined to declare victory over the other. Past Lives explores this duality through a very tender and wonderfully aesthetic screenplay. The film's score was amazingly unique as well. Every piece seemed to fit perfectly with the sentiment of the scene. I particularly enjoyed the constant nonverbal communication displayed between the two main characters. There were these frequent and silent moments shared between them that seemed to force the audience into those moments with them. To feel every passing second of them. Great film!

its a masterpiece for sure, but this movie hurts even more to those people who dont have (and never had) anyone in their life. Its so weird that most people always have (and had) someone or the other in their lives right from the very beginning of their life, but on the other hand, some people never had anyone, ever, never got even a chance to have any sort of relationships. Such people only imagine what it would feel like to actually have someone who they could call a soulmate, and then correlate with such movies. Doomed romance movies are often a reminder how things actually work in real life for 'normal' people, but still, almost no one talks about those who are still waiting for their "first".

Went to watch it last weekend on opening, and its been on my mind since. Celine Song, Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro are the perfect combination of people for depicting how circumstances so often out of our hands can both bring together and break apart the most perfect combinations of people.

It’s not slow as in boring. It’s as if you’re taking in every single emotion. You feel the desire, the anxiousness, the warmth, the comfort and the pain of both characters. Absolutely heartfelt, a story many could relate to, as I do 😢myself. I believe that there is a soulmate that you connect with out there. We met when we were 9 and I just immediately felt curious about him, I just wanted to know everything about him. We stayed friends all through middle school and in high school we dated. It wasn’t anything serious but I do have fond memories of it. We reconnected in our early 20s and he broke my heart over and over again. We’re in our mid 30s and I still think of what would have happened if we had stayed together from high school, if he had not done what he did when we were young, if maybe I chose myself too early on without trying for us.
