    I think hail damaged trucks can be a bargain if used as genuine work trucks - you know the ones that get dented and scratched on a daily basis anyway.

    Don’t agree with Sam totally on this! I bought truck with good miles with literally 2 dozen SMALL hail dents for $4300 ($11k value)with a hail title that I detailed($125), fix the 7 hood dents($250) added eBay bedcover side($50) to cover 5 dents, rotors brakes ($250)& new tires($500) and sold it $7500.
    Bought a convertible for my kid for $6k that was valued at $13k and I repaired the hail for $1500(repaired dents, windshield and replace hood and deck-lid from junkyard same color) and it looks perfect again! And the kid was HAPPY😅 and so was I!
    Bought a work truck for $2K that was worth every bit of $7k that I didn’t fix any dents that I sold to a roofer for $4k the same week!
    I’ll continue to purchase hail cars! Just don’t bid on the really HOT - POPULAR models if you wanna save $$$$$ big.

    Hail damaged cars are great for college students like me who care more about having a reliable, safe car than a good looking one. I have had multiple friends who bought newer, low milage cars to just drive as is without putting any money into them other than cracked/broken glass.

    I disagree. I purchased a $10k truck for $4k after fees at copart that had a dozen larger hail dents, and a busted windshield. I put a new windshield in for $200, and am driving it daily. No, it doesn't look perfect, but it is a diesel, and I can put 100k more miles on it and sell it for what I paid for it. It all depends on what your goal is.

      Disagree as well. Just got myself a clean title Subaru Forester Limited from 2021. 18k miles. Would be 32000 at a dealer or from a private, I paid 16300 including taxes.
      Turns out it's still got manufacturer's warranty active until May 2024 for all parts, and May 2026 for powertrain (36/60k miles limitation, but I will probably not drive it more than 10k a year so I'm good). Best purchase of my life, I'd say.

    I bought a hail / storm damaged Mazda6. At the time I needed to find a car quickly and I had cash. I found a Mazda 6 with about 50,000miles it had hail damage and a tree limb fell on the trunk. I did a lot research on the model and did my homework on the car history and options it has all the options I wanted on it. I always stress do your homework on car searches.. i saved about 6000.00 over a non damaged car i tend to keep my cars a along time. If you like to trade every few years this type of deal isn't for you. Resale on these cars are not as good. You'll take a hit on that. One of the best trouble free cars I've owned

    I was looking at a new Hyundai Forte. It was a leftover from last year. It was a pretty car: white with aluminum wheels, navigation, leather seats. Only thing is that this car was made without air conditioning! It listed for 25,000 and the dealer asking price was 13,000. I called the dealership about it and the salesman offered it to me for 11,500. I thought why would I want a car without air? The salesman kept calling me back every few days: they couldn't get rid of this thing! His final offer was $8,500.

    That first year price fall is pretty good for second hand buyers,. Cars have like 24.000km (15.000mi) and they are likely dealership cars, rentals or manufacturer vehicles etc.. so pretty good condition and you cannot do anything wrong either.. of course it's not new but "nearly" and you have warranty

    Something like the Hyundai is noy worth rebuilding but is a good deal for someone who wants a discount on a newer safe/reliable vehicle if they are willing to drive with hail damage. Great for a commuter vehicle or a first car for a teenager, college student--buy at the discount "salvage" price and live with the hail damage. A car like that would still be mechanically sound and a better option than spending the same amount on a clean title/non-damaged version of that vehicle from a used car dealer.

      Samcrac nice, need to find a backyard body shop. I have a Huge territory and didn't want to put mileage on my Porsche. So I bought a totaled VW Jetta (2012 with 60k but lots of hail damage) for 3k.
      However one thing I was not prepared for was how much of a PITA to get a totaled car registered in NJ. In fact I had to register the car in our PA. Address as NJ states the car needs to be returned to its "original" condition before the hail!!! That would have easily cost more than a mint condition Jetta of the same year and mileage. I'm slowly replacing the damaged parts as they come up. The deck lid, the hood were easy. The doors will be easy, the roof...not so much.
      Anyway great channels, glad I found it. Just subscribed

    Hey Sam!
    I’m from The Netherlands 🇳🇱, love your channel!
    If I’ll import a damage car into my country, our gov will give me a kind of discount on car import taxes upfront close as high the repair cost for the particular vehicle would be.
    For example.
    A 2014 Ford Fusion (Mondeo in EU-spec) in good condition with like 50k miles would cost me €23.000/$26.000 at the local Ford dealership. If I’ll buy a hail suffered Fusion for like $5/6k, shipping to EU $2k and repairs $4 it would cost me $12k (€9500). My gov would tax me like €4000 on a Mondeo, let’s say I receive a damage discount of €3000.
    In total a US spec Fusion would take me €11000 or like $13000.
    This given makes it a pretty good deal for us European?
    Keep up the good work!

    Here in Australia there is no legal way to re-register a car that has ever been written off. There are a couple of exceptions (historic being one) including hail damage - but only if you owned the car for 28 days or more before the damage was done. Which basically means if the person who owned it when the damage was done isn't interested then it can never be registered again, which is a pain in the ass, because I just found a car with nothing but a few dents in the bonnet/hood but I can't register the damn thing!

    So your argument is other people bid up these cars. The reason for this is there is less gambling going on. Most auction cars you have no idea what mechanical problems they might have (especially with transmission). Cars in accidents, at least you know they have were driving at the time of the accident--but then you have to watch out for frame damage and you will definitely have to buy parts to fix the damage. With hail damage--usually you can tell the car was being driven at time of damage, usually they are lower mileage cars, so less chance of mechanical issues, and there are no parts to buy. You can either fix with PDR (pulling out dent without repainting) or the easy method--just use bondo and paint over the slight dents after pulling them up traditionally. Cost for this is less than $100. So yes, you might get a good deal with other cars--but if major damage, there goes your profit. Not to mention time--I'll take hail over real damage every time.

    Sam, we see a lot of firefighters and cops who actually want a car that is mechanically reliable, but BUTT UGLY. They call them "beaters". Because their cars are left parked in a lot all day while they are on the job, car thieves know they will not be interrupted, so the cars get targeted big time. Yes, even in fenced locked lots at PDs and fire houses.
    A hail damaged car, mechanically great but with every body panel beat? A lot of these guys would want it! Even "ugly" gets loved.

    Ima 16 year old who's been Saving for a while and I saved 8.5k I'm looking for a BMW 335i or a 135i or a car around that performance spec. I've seen some of those cars for 1.5k to 2k for a hail done car or a car that is labeled "normal wear". Assuming that the hail damage car is just on the top of the car so like the hood, roof, and trunk, I'm thinking about just buying those parts. I've seen hoods for 100 bucks. I couldn't find roof. But I've seen the rear of the car for like 80 bucks. I'm sure the roof wouldn't be more then like 500 bucks so is that worth it

    What's the process in getting a hail damaged car roadworthy for the DMV? If I wasn't concerned about selling the car, can I just get a hail damaged car and do the very minimal work to get it roadworthy? Or are there other hoops to jump through before I can drive it as a daily driver?

    • @chevegan
      @chevegan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can even buy them new at the dealer as I have at a huge discount with new clear title. The dealership claims a loss with their personal property insurance so the car has a clean title. As long as the windows and mirrors are all in order the dmv doesn't care

    • @googly482
      @googly482 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh HECK YES... I buy only clean title hail-damaged vehicles. Carfaxes are clean, other than saying "insurance total loss vehicle"; for the vehicles I buy, the MFR WARRANTIES ARE STILL GOOD (you can call the mfr with the VIN and verify before you buy)! I have insurance and registration here in FL with NO PROBLEMS.
      Translation from insurance/car dealer who wrote off the hail-y car as a "total loss": "We had a hailstorm come through our town. Too many cars were damaged at all the same time and we don't have enough PDR people to fix them. It's easier to write them off and send them to the salvage yard. "Too many, too soon, too few!" = perfect storm for a car buyer who wants decent, reliable transportation for WAY less money. So yes, a perfectly good-under-the-hood (and inside) car is thrown into the salvage yard with the flood and collision cars!

    Buying a wrecked car to fix it isn't worth it. Flood damaged cars are the worst,because look where the water goes and you have no idea where it got into if it got up to the doors,electronics would need to be replaced and who knows about hidden rust problems. I'd stay away from salvage titled cars.
