He was releasing excessive haki without control then enma warned him by draining his arm, Zoro understood and he was able to relax and focus on obtaining conqueror haki
Enma was trying to teach Zoro how to access his latent conqueror's haki, and to stop doubting himself. Zoro had been trying to maintain his haki so he didn't run out, because he understands that him and Luffy can't go down at the same time, or the crew would die. So Zoro tried to pace himself to fight longer. Enma was telling Zoro to let go of those thoughts, because they were holding him back. So he had to stop doubting himself in that moment, and stop thinking about if he ran out of haki, and just released it anyway. That's when he unlocked his conqueror's haki. Now that Zoro understands it, he wants to get stronger because he realizes how much haki Enma really takes and that Oden used it with ease.
As Tobirama said, the mistake Zoro was making was restraining his Haki. When he wholeheartedly gave himself and his life to the fight and to Enma, he unlocked his conviction. And Enma fully accepted him as its owner, thus not draining his Haki anymore. He can use Enma freely now.
He’ll die either way, and the kingly way to respond to that situation is to exert his will rather than to give in. So he earns Enma’s respect and unlocks his conquerer’s haki and beats King with that decision.
