A trick I used to quit smoking was to keep a full pack of cigarettes on my desk. I told myself I could have one any time I wanted, I simply chose not to. In this way, I increased my own agency. I wasn't not smoking because I didn't have access to cigarettes, I was not smoking because I continuously chose not to. As a western layperson, I'm constantly surrounded by defilements, cravings, opinions of others who may not necessarily believe as I do. Because of this, I'm always going to have to deal directly with attachment and craving. The important thing is being able to make the choice not to chase after them.
Thats so interesting because ive been wanting then not doing, when i throw out the cigs it makes me want them more, or get anxiety or fear that ill go into panic, that i realised i think its better i have them on me, and choose not ot - also feels much more mature and empowering, but i havent quite done it yet, but i feel im guided to do it this way, rather than the traditional aproach by forcing discipline - i think this way is likely more sustainable even if it takes longer...to quiten the small voice now only about 5% of me that is not full on side with bidding farewell.
I love his dharma talks because he focuses on every day real life issues. I think it's important to be mindful of his sense of humor- his hokey jokes and sarcastic advice. I don't think he means for you to take some of his words literally- like the public shaming and F stand for fantastic. He's one of those people that you have to overlook his awkward sense of humor and stay focused on the real topic. Take the lesson light heartedly.

I enjoy ajahn brahm's dharma talks however on this topic taking and practicing the 12 steps of AA is by far the best way to treat addiction. As a recovery alcoholic I do find buddhism also "helps" me to live happy and free.
Sometimes when you mix spiritual practices/beliefs with the 12 step program you find that the methods to end addiction are actually quite the same. For example the step of turning your life over to God (or whatever u believe in) can be becoming a buddhist or a daoist turning your life over to something greatest than urself. Also the step of continuing to check in with yourself and correct yourself when your wrong is the same as allowing thoughts, sensations, and feelings to come and go as soon as you notice them which is a central concept to meditation. And when you practice love and kindness you naturally have a desire to make amense to all the people you've hurt. And most spiritual practices from any sort of religion or philosophy requires a deep awareness of oneself this allows you to cleanse, transmute, or fix character defects and to admit that they need to change. Also the same goes for guidance. Most religions or philosophies have some sort of spiritual connection that allows you to ask for guidelines and that give you the power to follow that guidance. One example is Daoism. Also most faiths nd philosophies give deeper insights into cravings, desire, pleasure, hedonism, chasing, and addiction that can broaden our understanding of these phenomenon. And last but not least all promote connection, either self love, or love for all which remedies the feelings of disconnection that every addiction tries to fill.
This is one of those topics that monks really fail to understand. Jokes and affirmations, as a cure for addiction, highlights the massive contrast between a monastic life and a non-monastic life. Sweeping statements about ‘mind and thinking’ are not enough to dislodge the diseased thinking (Neurochemically grounded) from the mind of the addict.
Yeah I feel like this is a video for someone addicted to like caffeine or sugar? I definitely don't feel like this is someone who really understands compulsive addictions. I can go 3 months without drinking but at a certain point it just feels soul-crushing. Sure I feel proud of myself and hopeful that I won't drink again, but the feeling of empowerment doesn't work to stop me when that craving hits. And I know that the point of Buddhism is rooting out craving, so there must be something I'm not doing right here. I keep trying AA and it just feels like this slog. I just get so tired of it and bored with it.
@@enzogonzales608 I think it comes down to a matter of self believe. If You can make Yourself to believe in something, then that deep personal believe will be a driving force controlling Your behaviour in a default mode.
@@enzogonzales608 whenever you attached to things, it is called addiction…you will suffer whatever you attach to it ( money, relationship, alcohol, whatever) you have to let go…but to let go all of that… you need to do mindfulness daily… it is very hard but doable…I overcome addiction to alcohol and drug and relationships because I understand how to let go all of that… I practice mindfulness daily… relax and look deeply inside… it takes at least 3-6 months at first… self-discipline is the key…good luck
it works i just say to me i dont smoke the next hour and then another hour and another hour and so on if i have the feeling of need to smoke i just delay it for an hour and if i still need to smoke then i can smoke but most time the need for a cigarette was away or atleast it was not strong enough and i just go for another hour xD so i became clean for a week now and im happy and i try to do this now with other bad habbits wish me luck and i wish u luck too with what ever you trying to do! greetings from germany btw if u dont have a clock to read the time u can also say something like if i have breathed 300 time and i still have the craving then i can smoke a cigarette works fine too for me tbh most times the craving is away really soon i never counted to 300 breathings xD
I went to a Buddhist meeting tonight, the monk taking the class was rude to me in front of everyone. The whole class was stunned. I'm a nice person, but this episode has coloured my view of Buddhism.
jillianbland Just because one buddhist was mean doesn't mean buddhism is mean. People are human and they sometimes stray even if thet are a monk. Don't take it personal, he may have just had a bad day.

I like these talks but what you said about video taping someone when they are drunk. DO NOT DO THIS! I had someone do this when I was very young :/ It was stupid of me but still we don't want to see what we were doing. And also if your friend is drunk don't kick him in the balls while hes on the ground thinking there are monsters in the air
