Is the right hand strumming your doing what the rhythm guitar is doing the whole song? I’ve having had any luck on finding what the rhythm guitar is doing.
In the album mark recorded two guitars and combined them together. You can hear it well if you listen to the isolated guitar track. When he plays it live he plays the rhythm in between the guitar licks
Nice! I'm still trying to comprehend the strumming pattern - no matter how much i slow down the videos to demonstrate it, my brain gets it, but my hand does not.
I didn't realize until watching these vids how much Mr. Knopfler uses his thumb on the fret board. Videos of him playing never focus on him enough to notice.

Hi, Dylan! As a guitarist with 12 year experience I can give you an advice, I mean your right hand's distance from the guitar's neck is significant for extracting a sound. When your right hand is closer to the fretboard, the sound is like "butter" and is mild. On the other hand when it is closer to the bridge, the sound is harder and louder. I really encourage you to learn how to manouver this thing, cause your guitar is more likely to become a "storyteller". Good Luck!
