It wasn't "hearing Ringo" that allowed The Beatles to weather the storm of fan backlash that included riots on Mathew Street, billboard protests, and all-night vigils outside Pete's home, with girls sleeping in his garden. It was that the Mersey Beat paper announced a couple days later that The Beatles recording contract was official and they would be flying to London on September 4th for their first recording session. There were over 500 bands in Liverpool at the time, and The Beatles were the first EVER from the city to get a recording contract. I'm sure many fans swore The Beatles off forever because they had betrayed Pete, but most stuck with them because of their Liverpudlian pride in having a signed rock group of their own, warts and all.

    What I have noticed about Pete Best from interviews I have seen and read by him is he appears to still have some affection for John Lennon. They seem to have had a good relationship as Best said Lennon was the one he got on with the most. This is despite some nasty comments made by Lennon about Pete Best in the early 70's. It seems Lennon was still in touch with Mona Best as Pete claims Lennon asked Mona if he could borrow her father's war medals to wear for the Sgt Pepper cover, which she agreed to do.
    Regardless of the debate whether Pete Best was a better drummer than Ringo Starr, the fact remains Best contributed to the evolution of British pop and rock during his time with The Beatles. He could have been replaced anytime by the others, but they chose not to and his dismissal was a mess which put Brian Epstein in a difficult position.

    • @michaelharrington75
      @michaelharrington75 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The story about John asking Mona to borrow the medals has been proven false. Neil Aspinall was in a relationship with Mona Best at the time, and just picked the medals up on the way out the door. He let John wear them for the photo shoot, and took them back when it was over.

Ringo was a far superior drummer to Pete. Pete's timing was very inconsistent. He had no originality, and didn't continue to grow as a drummer. Four different producers said Pete wasn't a quality enough drummer to do studio work. That's why he got the boot! The history has already been determined, and written. Nothing can change that now.

    Tuesday 27 December 1960 the Beatles played Litherland Town Hall and blew everyone away.... they never looked back after that. That was the tipping point. After that they gigged consistently, with block bookings (promoters booked them for a block (multiple) of shows) and earning more each time. They attracted Epstein's attention, and he was motivated to invest time and money to build their career. That is almost 2 years (20 months) before Ringo joined. Discussions about who's better or what ever discussion point you want to raise is academic, and completely irrelevant. Pete was part of that key period and Ringo was not. These are facts. it's amazing to me that tons of people have opinions about this when they are all based on history as told by the victors and sycophants.

    • @paulnicosia8804
      @paulnicosia8804 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Further, I raised the point that Pete's story and contribution has never been told properly with Mark Lewisohn. His response was ..."I stand robustly behind everything I included in the book, and, ditto, behind things not included, which owed solely to lack of supporting detail - quotes, etc.
      I am satisfied that I am the first and only writer to give full and even attention to the Pete Best side of things. This will continue in books 2 and 3."
      Lack of supporting detail.......
      Just to be clear, IMHO, if you can only read one book about the Beatles I would highly recommend Mark's book(s) Tune In (both the standard and extended editions). He does an amazing job of telling the story in context of time, meaning that he doesn't let hindsight bleed into it's telling. However, I think that he does use foretelling language on a number of occasions, when discussing Pete Best.
      Frankly people just don't want to know otherwise right now.

      @@donna25871 You wanna know the truth about why Ringo Starr got Pete Best's job? It had nothing to do with drumming talent, it had everything to do with jealousy. Pete was the far and away most popular Beatle with the fans, club managers, and press. Not just for his leading-man looks, but because he was a great drummer. But hey, don't take my word for it. Here's what a contemporary drummer of Pete's said when he was asked in an interview what he thought of Pete's drumming: *"He was a genius. You could sit Pete Best on a drum kit and ask him to play for 19 hours and he'd put his head down and do it. He'd drum like a dream with real style and stamina all night long, and that really was The Beatles' sound, forget the guitars. I was amazed when they replaced him. I even thought about learning guitar so he could be the drummer in my band. The Beatles didn't hate Pete Best, but they didn't want to be outshone by their drummer. Ringo was a good drummer but he was more ordinary."* -- Chris Curtis, drummer for The Searchers, a great Liverpool band who scored a 1964 Top 3 Hit in the US charts with their classic, "Love Potion # 9". Many people negatively comment on the firing of Pete Best from the Beatles and the way it was done. I say that they should try to put themselves back during that time. They had no idea they were going to attain SUPER stardom. We think of the situation as being cutthroat, but had the Beatles not hit it so big, Pete's sacking would've just been another bad break....something many musicians experience.
    Could the other Beatles have handled the situation better? Of course, but they were kids. I don't know that I could've done better.
    However, remember that Pete did get a big payout. For the tracks on which he appeared on the Anthology albums, he said he got about a seven-figure remuneration. He even said that that sort of made up for what happened.

    Pete seems in poor health here? He seems quite hesitant and breathless. I hope he’s okay?
    His legacy in terms of being apart of the Beatles story is well and truly cemented. Without him as a drummer for those 2 years they would not have made it as a band. John even said “some of our best stuff was never recorded”. This period was when Pete was behind the drum kit. It was also with Pete that they gained there huge local following. This was the bed rock of there success. Crazy to think he played more gigs with John, Paul and George than Ringo did!!
    I personally believe it was a combination of “many factors” that resulted in Pete’s leaving the fab 4. His looks, his character. his drumming, his popularity, the timing, his mother etc…I’m pleased he was remunerated by the Anthology and it was what he deserved.
    It’s lovely to hear him tell the old stories and he can always say “he was there”. God bless you Pete!!🙏❤️🎼.x

    I have nothing but my deepest respects & apologies to a guy who did absolutely nothing wrong to deserve such a crushing blow like this one.
    Don't get me wrong, I like Ringo, but was Starr that much better than Pete on drums???? I've heard the majority of Beatles songs that both Best & Starr played on, & I don't hear much of a difference to kick a bandmate out that cold blooded.

    • @Cosmo-Kramer
      @Cosmo-Kramer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well said. Here's the truth about why Ringo Starr got Pete Best's job. It had nothing to do with drumming talent, it had everything to do with jealousy. Pete was the far and away most popular Beatle with the fans, club managers, and press. And John, Paul and George couldn't handle it. Chris saw Pete Best play many times in both Hamburg and Liverpool during Pete's two years as The Beatles' drummer.

He might've felt threatened by her at times, but that's because Brian felt threatened by anyone who had any influence on the band. But it was not that big of a deal to Brian, because when John, Paul and George told Brian they wanted to replace Pete, Brian fought them hard to keep Pete in the band. Not only did he like Pete, but he knew Pete was the biggest attraction in the band. Brian even enlisted Cavern DJ and Beatles insider, Bob Wooler, to try to talk them out of it, but they would not budge. So Brian reluctantly did the deed and sacked Pete.

    Pete Best was robbed. Ringo sucks as a Drummer. It’s my opinion and I am using it. It was politics.. Paul John and George did not have the courage to fire Pete. They had there manager do it for them. Very courageous of you lads they were. Pete is a perfect Gentleman. Always meets with us fans. Ringo warns everyone with peace and love. That he can’t do this and that. Cause he is busy ? Please Ringo go to hell.

      My late uncle used to see The Beatles in Liverpool way back then and told me that all the girls hung around Pete at gigs, and the other three guys were very jealous. Ron Richards at Abbey Road didn't think much or Pete OR Ringo's drumming at their demo sessions apparently.

      @@stevep1941 Oh - so when Ringo joined, the fans turned their backs on them? Beatlemania stopped when Pete Best was kicked? The girls never screamed again? John, Paul, Ringo and George just weren't good enough to make it big? Yeah, just imagine how famous The Beatles would've become if Pete had stayed. They really didn't produce any music of notice after Best left. It all stopped there. Yeah, true that.
