  • Most of us, young and old, are addicted to something. Addictions can take many forms: alcohol, drugs, pornography, sex, games, work, phone, eating, shopping, etc. etc. Even patterns in our thinking can be addictive.
In this sharing Sister Dang Nghiem invites us to look deeper at our addictions, and to understand the roots of it. Why are we addicted? Only when we understand the deeper emotions - and sometimes trauma - underlying our addictions, we can start to heal and to transform.
Most people don't want to face their addiction, as they would have to face the underlying emotions. These emotions are often so painful, or so dark, that people do everything to cover them up and to run away from them ... they look for solace in alcohol, drugs, pornography, sex, games, work, phone, eating, shopping, etc. to numb themselves. But by doing so, they create more suffering, for themselves and for others.
With deep understanding Sister Dang Nghiem explains the working of our emotions, and shows us a path of healing: the way out is in. The key and power of healing lies inside each one of us. When we learn to be really present for our deep emotions, to embrace and transform them, we can liberate ourselves from repetitive patterns of suffering. In the same way we can learn how to be really present for family members, friends and collegues, who struggle with addictions.
As Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh always said: "To love is to be there. How can we love if we are not there?" We breathe mindfully with our emotions, we walk mindfully with our emotions, we embrace them, and this way we heal. We can do this for ourselves and for our loved ones. Healing our addictions, is healing our world.
Sister Dang Nghiem wrote three very personal, powerful and practical books about strong emotions and the path of healing:

    2. Mindfulness as Medicine ➛ www.parallax.o...
    3. Flowers in the Dark ➛ www.parallax.o...
An important title written by Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh about this topic is 'Taming the Tiger Within' ➛ www.parallax.o...
On behalf of Sister Dang Nghiem I wish you all a beautiful journey. Coming home to yourself, a world of peace, joy, true love and equanimity is possible.

Thanks for sharing. I gave up alcohol when I realized nothing is solved or things get worse by drinking 🍺🍷

I am struggling with an addiction of sorts to suicidal thoughts. I want in part to run away from my stress, trauma, and suffering in a very literal way. But what I want more is to be full of self-love, peace, and true freedom. I am walking this path of love to the best of my ability. I am grateful for this talk that is full of compassion. I send love and blessings to everyone in the sangha who is walking the path of love right along with me. ❤💐🌈

❤I cannot find the right words to express the gratitude I have in my heart n soul. Your genuine compassion for those of us that were born with addictive personalities has given me hope that thecycle of addiction that plagued my family for generations can be broken by me. Just yesterday I was telling my dear husband that I feel like I was doomed from the start. When I was just a girl of 8 or 9 years old I heard there was stuff that could make me feel different from the way I felt inside full of fear and rage. By 12 I stsrted a 30 year journey of using anything that would numb my pain. A few years ago I started to listen to the stories of The Buddha and how he taught me about the 1st noble truth of Dukka. But it was hearing you say that I too can find the end of my suffering. May your life be full of love and happiness 🌻

Thank you Sister Dang Nghiem ❤ This really helps me understand myself and others. Addiction truly is a coping mechanism, it helps to survive an unbearable situation. Just trying to survive. We should not judge but try to understand and create a better society, in the present moment and from now on. It is a very courageous deed to stop and just be 🌺🌸🌼

Fear or love. There is always a choice. Therein lays our freedom. It may not feel easy. It may feel impossible. Yet, choice is available.
