    Always interesting to see the variations in procedure of different countries on how structures are put together. I've either built or helped build a number of structures in several different countries and whether it's roofing, framing, plumbing, or electrical it's always different. This type of construction is actually from California. Same builders and methods. Some call it the Pasadena style. From the colonial period (mid 1800's) right through to the 1940's (war) most of what we see in NZ was influenced by the labour and methods of the West Coast of the US.

      Percentage? Probably a good 50% use corrugated metal roofing. The other major one is concrete tiles.
      NZ was an old English farming outpost essentially in the early days, so the mentality of "doing best with what tools and materials you had" is apart of the NZ psyche. Plenty of metal roofing for farm sheds etc, why not on the family home?

    Good example what happens when you fix roof panel from ridges.
    All nail/screw holes start to leak because it isn't rigid enough to prevent roof panel slightly moving on wind and with thermal movement also you can't get tight seal for that rubber sealant because metal will bend.

    • @DiscoFang
      @DiscoFang 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These roofs are incredible strong and weatherproof and the whole roof forms a diaphragm. The screw pattern is not just along the ridge edge. The corrugation profile allows for the expansion and contraction. It's an incredibly versatile and durable build method when it incorporates hurricane ties and the correct bracing methods.

    Metalex is generally used to treat any fresh cuts that will be exposed to moisture and the elements. Not so much for beetles/ boron related issues. If that were the case you would use a chemical / fumigating application instead.

    Why not use a foil insulation blanket instead of just sarking. The blanket helps reduce mechanical noise transmission from the metal creaking.

    Ive got major noise that seems to come through the roof (same style as this one, but i notice its got building paper underneath) when I replace it what sort of options could be used to reduce the noise that travels through it? I can even hear birds walking on it in bedrooms, could plywood or some sort of rubber membrane (thicker building paper?) be used underneath the tin sheets to provide more of a noise barrier? Im guessing traffic noise always makes it way through if im able to hear birds walking on the roof too

      Plywood would definitely remove that sound transmission. Or any other kind of sarking (boards) as an underlay. Starts getting pricey depending on what you use but there are often suppliers getting rid of ply that has failed the structural test, or other DD rated ply. Even 9mm ply would greatly increase sound and heat insulation.

    also questionable is the metelex sprayed on the purloin , it is solvent based and will presumably react with the roofing paper
