The Final Rescue From Selydove (28 August 2024)
As we were working our way back to Selydove we saw the city burning from the road. The areas where it was burning was very close to where we were going. As we arrived into the city, we could all smell the unmistakable sulfur smell from exploding artillery shells and hear the audible sound of explosions getting louder as we drove directly into the areas where fighting was occurring.
We already had one person with their pets in the van, and our goal was to evacuate another man and his pets to safety who happened to be in the very center of the city. He lived on the 9th floor of a building and had been watching the advancement of Russians into his city. No one else would take him since he had animals, so it was left to Global Animal and ‪@AnimalRescueKharkiv‬to get in and get them out.
We hid the van as best as we could knowing that we had already been seen on the drive in by the recon and observation drones. We got to the man and started the process to get the animals and the possessions he wanted to take to the van. He said he was just watching the fighting and the burning get closer and closer to where he was, and he wondering if we were going to get to him in time. Thankfully we did, and we loaded he and his animals up.
As we were loading him up, the thuds of artillery started getting closer and closer. The time between impacts was getting shorter and shorter, and we could feel the concussion as rounds were landing nearer to us as we worked. He was eager to leave and emphasized the need to hurry up, which we were trying to do.
We are thankful we got him out when we did. Less than two hours later, Russian forces were in the center of the city and in the block of buildings where he lives. Since then, they have been expanding their reach in the city itself, but the Ukrainian military has managed to keep them from taking over the whole city. We just hope that they can get the strength to push them back out of the city so we can go back and continue to help those animals left behind and in need of rescuing.
