Always enjoy your videos, Ethan. Those were significant upgrades which I think shows the although Record Power may have slipped in their initial tailstock design, they listened and made improvements. I think it is significant that they replaced the earlier non ejecting tailstocks in the US market which I think shows great customer service.
I just picked up mine earlier this week, the Herald lathe is top notch, my has the new tail stock but honestly they only thing that is a little annoying is how short the throw of the quill. I have a piece to add some much needed length to the throw and that works pretty good. maybe a live center that is longer so that I can get into the bowl a little further would work better too.
I’ve just purchased a Herald with the new tail stock, and am impressed with whole machine. One comment, they appear to have put the wrong cables on the mains emf suppression box. What I mean is that the very short cable connects it to the machine, whilst the much longer cable connects it to the mains socket. The result is that the box just hangs below the machine, if the cable lengths were reversed the box could be attached somewhere, perhaps next to the socket, making it safer and neater. I thought of attaching it to the bed, using double sided adhesive tape, but that would prevent moving the head down the bed. Any thoughts?
Hello Stuart. Record Power have already confirmed that to me, and appeared to be saying, that “it’s always been like that” somehow makes it OK. Are you actually agreeing with them? If so, on what grounds? “Cable tie the box to the motor”. Bodge job springs to mind, what about double sided tape or chewing gum? This is a ‘quality’, expensive piece of equipment and deserves better. Can you name another piece of ‘fixed’ electrical equipment, with a short lead connecting it to, for example a filter, which swings in the air, with another cable hanging from it, with a 13amp plug on the end of that? When the solution is cheap and obvious. I’m certain that all informed electrical engineers would be of the opinion that this is an unsafe practice. Your thoughts would be very welcome.
@@Jestey6 I’m saying I have had one since they came out and mine is the same as yours. They can be run without the RF filter. I have cable tied mine to the back of the motor. Under the control panel. It’s only the same as a starter capacitor on a compressor motor. All my equipment has electrical and is PAT tested every 12 month so it’s definitely not a bodge I do agree with you it would have been better with a longer lead
@@stuart-hayes Hi Stuart. I think we are of the same mind, and if we agree that the lead lengths are the wrong way round, and this could be easily improved, why do you think RP have difficulty agreeing, money, money, money? Oh no that’s ABBA. Mind you, I view a capacitor, tie wrapped to a motor, as being a bit of a bodge. PORTABLE appliance testing (PAT) testing describes the examination of portable electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use. Can a 48 kg lathe be described as portable? Visual examination is used for some types of DEFECTS. However, I doubt the short lead, as in this case, could be described as a defect, during PAT testing. Cheers Noel.
There is a secret hole in the handwheel. Align the who at TDC(top dead centre) and insert an allen key. There is a small allen screw holding in the keeper plate. Once the keeper plate is removed everything comes apart quite easily. I hope this helps!
The old tailstock when turning the wheel the handle doesn’t swivel. I’m wondering does the new handle swivel when turning the wheel would make it a lot more easier and comfortable for turning the wheel? Thanks
@@MrVinny3006 Vincent, the handle does not swivel but the wheel is larger and easier to grip. However this tailstock is superior to the old one in many ways. The action is smoother, easier, faster and self-ejection works like a charm. I am in the process of making several spools for my wife to use for knitting. They need a thru hole down the centre. I used a 3/4 speed bit and had no issues drilling with the new tailstock. Very smooth and easy. Hope this helps; it’s a great upgrade
only just seeen this very useful clip, the non ejecting tailstock nearly put me off buying the Herald, im suprised Record aren't shouting about this improvement in the UK?
The bigger diameter of the Record's wheel is the reason why a lot of dust and particles of wood get inside the tailstock and you -me- get a lot trouble and headache!!!! Very bad !!!

Wow, they are some really awesome and major upgrades.👌🏽
Cheers for sharing that, mate.👍🏽
For sure! Thanks

thats a really nice upgrade! you should promote it much more!! its not easy to get it anywhere
That feeling, when you've purchased lathe with improved tailstock! 😊

Cable tie it to the Motor.. Mine has been like that for 5 years without any issues

Can you get the upgraded tailstock separately or does it come only with a new lathe?
Can you still use a drawbar with this new style tailstock ?
How do you remove the hand wheel to clean it from the inside?
Did we ever get pricing for just the tailstock? I already have the lathe!
For the new tailstock, do you know how to remove the quill for cleaning?

@@StockroomSupply okay - will look for it. thx
Cool.
Definitely Cool
Are they going to sell the tail stock alone for the people that already bought the herald?
Yes they will be! I still need to confirm the price. They should be listed on our website shortly.
No link to the pricing or availability for this accessory, Ethan.
Hey John, We will send you an email with pricing once we confirm :)
@@StockroomSupply Thanks, Ethan.
can i buy the tailstock already seperately? thanks
Would like this a lot. Just the tailstock, already have the lathe. How much?

how do you clean the tail stock mine a bit stiff
no link??
only just seeen this very useful clip, the non ejecting tailstock nearly put me off buying the Herald, im suprised Record aren't shouting about this improvement in the UK?
It would cost them too much in warranty claims
Now if only the Herald had a wired remote like the Envoy, it would be even better and fly off the shelved even quicker.
The Magnetic stop switch does help but yes the Envoy movable remote is VERY nice!
i'm running out of excuses!

The tailstock is probably the worst part of this lathe. The new one looks better but I suspect it still doesn't like lateral forces.
It is still not a good design. Record have replaced parts on mine that worn out after only a few months of use.
