Jeff, you didn't need to say a word...the expression on your face says it all. I don't know if any group covers CSN as well as F&F does. They simply KILLED this.
Their cover of Carry On is AMAZING, isn't it? Those vocals are so tight...and I may even like it more than the CSN original because of the addition of the female vocals.
I saw The Mamas and Papas live twice about 1965 and again in 1970. They were terrific BUT they never sounded this good. Chase hits the Mama Cass stuff better than she ever did it. You have to be brave and very good to try the CSNY stuff, let alone nail it. How fun is this.
Stephen Barncard record producer and assistant sound engineer for the CSNY Deja Vu album was the notable heaping praise in the comment section for this one.
Jeff, yes and WOW. I'm just a little old guitarist and this version inspired me to try this song again on my own. It's so much fun! It brings back memories, takes strength, concentration and brings everything that music can; joy! I can understand you very well!
Knew you were going to really dig this one! They generally do a nice job of putting their own touches on songs but in this case they nailed the CSNY version!! Loved it!!
I’m 72 and CSN&Ywas one of my favorite groups. This cover by this group was amazing! It almost took me back to when I was in school sitting on the floor in my bedroom with speakers hung on the wall listening to this. Thank you so much again for posting these classics performed by these very talented people!
I’m gonna have to start sending you some coin, you are so knowledgeable and entertaining. It’s just that I’m an old geezer and have to figure it out without China getting into my bank account. Again, thank you.
i have said this before, the pickers in this group are just awesome. needless to say, the vocals are just so sweet. re: woodstock, and how the times they are a changin'. i weep every day for our world and the current state of global and domestic affairs. that said, i find solace in communities like this channel produce for like minded people to seek refuge from the day to day issues. ☮❤🙏
Jeff, for another opportunity to marvel at their harmonies and think “I thought I already heard their best…” check out their cover of Eagles “Seven Bridges Road.”
Speaking of the vocals. Notice that the vocals are recorded using only one microphone. That means that the vocal mix is live. (That's why Tim leans towards the mic to highlight his voice in places. Recording with only one mic means that the individual vocal levels cannot be changed in post-production. That awesome blend is the wat it really sounded! Astonishing!
The vocal tracks are recorded individually like everything else. Maggie usually sends hers tracks from Nashville. When she comes to Atlanta , they try to get all the singers in studio and they video them singing around one mic for a couple songs while listening to the mixed recording. This saves Tim a lot of video editing and he can show all the singers instead of having each in a little box. Tim described how they do it in the comments the first time they did one that way (Dedicated) and other times since. Also multiple "making of" videos on patreon.
These guys are so accurate, so clean. Just stunning. This takes WORK, and they put in the work, to make this happen, i am sure. I find it interesting they all are singing into one microphone, while Leonid and Friends use multiple mics on their vocals.
They are recording individual vocal tracks, some done at other locations at times, then singing around the mike while listening to the mixed audio when they can get all the singers in the studio. Saves a lot of video editing , you can show the singers without having to put them all in separate little boxes.
I don't know... they may do that, bit they're clearly doing live vocals, and those vocals are being used. You can see it -- watch their mouths and listen.
@@jackarmstrong1838 They all record at different times when ever their schedule permits. Maggie usually sends her vocals from Nashville. When she comes to Atlanta they try to get all of the singers to come in and do the singing around one mic videos for a couple songs, or at least some of them together, otherwise she uses video from home as well. When Scott and now Ross plays bass that is sent from Virginia.
I think I’ve said it before Jeff, your analysis especially to this group f&f is amazingly on point. Your expression shows us your emotion couldn’t get any better than the original group it self. Mahalo!🤙
I discovered them a year or so ago, i love your smile and how you keep saying wow because you as a musician and producer validates how great i thought they were when i first saw them on TH-cam Thanks, John
I just subscribed to your channel because I like the way you appreciate the music from my generation. Your studio is also drop dead gorgeous. I stumbled on the Foxes and Fossils when the girls were still in school and was stunned by the quality of their music. I have been following them ever since and it's great to see the success that they have enjoyed. I believe that they were the second most popular (or profitable) group on all of TH-cam. I really like the way you treat this kind of music with the respect it deserves. I'm not sure if you have checked out a couple of a capela groups that also have amazing vocals. If you haven't had a chance to listen to them, please take a look at the Pentatonics version of Hallelujah and Home Free's version of the Crosby Stills and Nash song, Helplessly Hoping. I am a big CSN fan, but I must admit that the version that Home Free does is better. I know, that's heresy, but give it a listen and see for yourself. They have five voices instead of three, and their version will take your breath away. Keep up the good work. I'll be listening
Yeah - I like that song too. Just haven't put in a request for it. I've already done over 20 F&F requests for Jeff and decided it was time to diversify a little.
The one thing that disappoints me about F&F is their recent use of mono vocals. I would have use two mics and a different lineup, while keeping the group lined up. But maybe that's just me; after all, its been a few decades since I was a studio engineer.
What mono vocals? Everyone is recorded on separate tracks and mixed like any other modern studio recording. The everyone singing around the mic for the video is to eliminate a lot of video editing, and you can show everyone and not have to put all of them in little boxes. As Tim just said in an interview today," It's no secret how we do it." One of the sound engineers for CSNYs Deja Vu album raved about this recording in the comments section.
In a technical sort of way, F&F is better than CCNY (and many other all male groups like the Beach Boys...) Sopranos and altos singing high vocals sound better to me than falsettos!
Tim says that's key, everyone pretty much stays in their vocal comfort zone. He's been in 12 bands over his 50+ year music career, mostly musicians who also sing ok. Nothing like this group which was built from the vocals up.
I know people on TH-cam get upset when you say something negative, but this is not my favorite effort from them and I do like them and have listened for a good while. Not all the voices were in lip sync because of all the editing and about half way in the drummer started lagging and it just didn't sound as good overall at that point. I honestly stopped listening at that point. This is just my opinion. Love the OG recording from CSNY.
Are your sync issue comments re this reaction video or re the F&F video? I often see sync and sound quality issues with YT music reaction videos, and do see some here, presumably due to something that happens in the re-routing/re-playing of the orig vid to the reactor, back through their hardware and software and back to YT. I don't see the issues in the orig/F&F video. Also, even the audio from YT orig vids is sometimes noticeably altered vs artists released audio recording on music distributors, or in this case their CDs & AIF digital downloads from their website. This was first starkly apparent to me on their "Royals" song, where with headphones up high, the synthesized percussion in the YT vid is painfully loud/sharp, but not so in their download.
It’s so annoying on the video of the instrumentalist that the video is out of sync with audio. Note especially the drummer - trap set. Snare hits don’t match up. Ouch.
I'm not seeing it. I've noticed that same thing on random videos and generally the problem isn't with the video but that somehow the audio playback and video playback somehow get out of sync. I've noticed it especially on reaction videos like this one where you are watching a recording of a recording. But on this one everything looks good to me.

Thanks Jeff. For some reason TH-cam made it impossible for me to post that here!
If you post too many the youtube bots think youre a bot. I haven't been able to post a link to anything for years.
How many musicians would even attempt to do this let alone send it to the moon?
Jeff, you didn't need to say a word...the expression on your face says it all. I don't know if any group covers CSN as well as F&F does. They simply KILLED this.
sanfordmarkley ch. has some pretty good CSN covers. F&F better on the ones that they're done.

Darwin is an incredible guitar player, but so is his bandmate Toby Ruckert.

4 way street unforgettable live concert . Carry on was an outstanding chorus from CSN&Y. WELL done the Foxes.
THIS SONG WAS----------HANDS-DOWN, TGHE VERY BEST OF CSN&Y----------------THE VERY, VERY, BEST.-------MJL, 77 Y/O
spot on
Jeff! You really need to watch the latest Foxes and Fossils video "America" done at the Hapeville concert. You won't be disapointed.
If THIS doesn't give you hope for the future of music, (by looking to the past), NOTHING will. BRAVO ALL!

Exactly!!!
There are many to pick from. Sammie singing Angel from Montgomery is one of my favorites.

Foxes and Fossils are amazing, and this may be the masterpiece. Check out F&F''s "Helpless" to complete the CSNY trifecta.
Dont forget Southern Cross.
‘Helplessly Hoping’ (they’ve not covered ‘Helpless’).
Just imagine hearing it for the first time, in '70.
Please do Foxes and Fossils To Sir With Love with Chase singing solo.

See Jeff's Foxes and Fossils playlist. That was the second song he reviewed.
