I remember reading this in my youth back in the nineties. I can't remember finding it that impressive, nowhere near the same league as Frank Herbert's Dune or Greg Bear's Eon.

@@friedspacecowboy8760 As an adult I look at it as a perfect example of how libfilth like Iain Banks really believe there will be no unhappy ending to the current path of Western civilization. He thought, back then (as too many still do) that we can just have this utopia of hyper-abundance and total decadence, letting all of the morals of our ancestors go to the dustbin. He is of course totally wrong as shown by the current situation in Ukraine: the AFU is constantly complaining about recruitment and soldier desertions. They've started deploying women as a quick fix. How much more acute will the problem not be once we, the men of the West start getting drafted to go fight and die for our corrupt politicians? And among those forced to fight there will be more than a hand full of men who will patiently wait for the perfect chance to cause maximum damage to their own side before surrendering. Unless we can somehow return to the stoicism and self-sacrifice embodied by the Christian faith, the source of Western greatness, it will be time to learn Russian and Chinese.
