- In this guitar lessons we check out a hybrid fingerstyle percussive strumming thing... Kinda Neil Young stylee lots of fun. I show you the basics in this video then it's up to you to explore the concept further.
More advanced students might like to try my tune From Katie's Window which I wrote using this technique.
There are some more hints on pattern variations and TABS on the web site.

I bought Justin's album...and I have to say it's worth it just for the music in addition to being a gesture of appreciation. I've tried 3 guitar teachers now, and no one has even come close to matching Justin's technique of clear explanation/demonstration and method. Well done Justin. I wish you every success as an artist, but you are already top of the heap as a teacher.
I used to wear ear rings?? jeez.
and what's with those dollar bills on the wall? Someone tipped you? :P
Quick correction for the video description, J -- the link to the lesson is broken (it should be this one: www.justinguitar.com/en/TE-751-MelodicPercussiveFingerstyle.php). Cheers (and thanks for an amazing lesson, as always)!
Why I love Justin, in 1comment
Sir I learnt guitar through your videos 10 yrs ago. Thank you so much ❤️
Justinguitar what kinda brand strings do you use on the maton messiah guitar?
possibly one of the best lessons ever. attention strummers give your thumb and fingers indepenence from one another. absolute essential skill to have. thankyou J
Greetings Justin from South Alabama. I really enjoy studying with you. You have confirmed for me so much that doing it my way was ok; especially when many of my friends where telling me it was all wrong... well, I can't thank you enough. I never had a teacher, grandpa gave me an ol' Stella Harmony for my 12th birthday, taught me G, C, & D and said there ya go. If you want to play, do it. That was over 45 years ago. You are actually teaching me what I've been doing for all these years.
And Justin teaches this for free.... Amazing!!! You are our guitar Lord Sir! Thank you so very much.
THIS WAS THE MOST USEFUL Percussive slap/strum video tutorial ever, other videos make it so confusing but I learned it in a few minutes because of you, much thanks ^_^
same, I taught myself blues picking after watching old folk artists, this doubled my horizon. really stoked on getting it down pat with a solid melody

+George Lemeitre even I find it hard figuring out from his videos. I wanna play like Sungha one day.
they way you played at the beginning was probably the most beautiful thing i have ever heard
Honestly you saved my life youre literally the best guitar teacher on TH-cam
Thanks!
Thank you! Appreciate the support :)

I'm marking the video at this point in time for my own personal learning. Use it for yours as well.......and i don't care if your fingers are sore, keep doing it over and over. The world needs better musicians!
Thanks for the great lessons Justin!
Justin, you're such a great teacher and a pleasure to watch. This is really excellent, thank you. I cannot sing your praises too loudly.
I found you...today... Great... Sorry for my english....Thanks from Italy 🙏
Um... Don Ross? Anyone? Seriously, if you came up with this on your own, you've found a good way of mimicking some of the people on Candy Rat records. It sounds awesome.
This might also be one of the best videos for learning melodic finger-picking on TH-cam. THANK YOU!
Jason, I have watched many of your video's as an aid to my own learning but I must say, this is the tune that has impressed upon me that you really can play the guiter. Thanks and keep up the great work.
I couldn't decide whether to take an electric guitar or an acoustic guitar away to uni with me in September, this video decided it for me, going to invest in a mini martin and away I go! Thank you very much!
Your a complete ledgend thx for this. Im in the process of converting from electric to acoustic guitar playing and ive only been finger picking since easter. This is a cool idea that id heard ppl play, not youve slowed it down and explained it so well I think I can manage it! I also clecked out ur lesson on altered chords.. loved the simplified way to think of them with a core.. pure genious!! thx a bunch!! I rarely subscribe to any one.. youve already been such a big help! :)
I have been searching for this for so long! thank you
Beautiful tutorial...so much of dexterity in this lesson.. you are just amazing....and giving these lessons for free.....God bless you and your family for your wonderful work
This is such an amazing lesson! Talk about taking a simple idea and making it sound powerful. Thanks Justin.
Without doubt the most straightforward and useful guitar tutorials I've come across. Thanks so much!
perfect teacher. All impossibles made possible.Hard work made Easy.
Great lesson! Justin Townes Earle mostly used percussive finger style to awesome effect. If I can sound anything remotely like him I'd be thrilled (he sadly died last summer). Both Justins are awesome!
You get a nice half harmonic tone from the thumb slap, sounds nice man
I’m shouting THANK YOU!!!!!!
Nice. I liked the repetition of the pattern and then a close up, and some variations. Lots time to get the pattern. I cherry pick what I will spend time on and I will practice this one. Thanks.
Hey, don't feel bad about the 36 people who didn't like you. It's only because the know they could never play it. Nice job and thanks for showing us fresh guitar ideas. Thanks
Yes, I really like this "hybrid picking strum thing" !! All Sandercoe's videos makes you want to grab your guitar and start practicing !! Thanks for all your effort you put into it. This video is a favourite ! No more talking..:playing !! :-)
What a humble magician ! Great help..
I love this technique.
The best song to practice to is extreme - to be with you.
Opethfullcovers I think the two songs you are referring to are More than words by Extreme and To be with you by Mr.Big
Doh! You're right XD!
This is exactly what I was looking to learn when I started my search today. Will definitely be checking out more of your videos. Thanks, dude!
Many have commented about playing with nails. I have been playing for over 45 years and love the sound that nails create, however I also have lame nails. There are a number of solutions. For me, I learned to make acrylic nails. Takes me less than 5 mins per nail. There are a number of videos on TH-cam showing you how to do it. I do not use the acrylic tips. I build them from scratch. My guitar picking sounds amazing with them and they do not break like my natural nails.
Absolutely fantastic lesson, this is great to learn. Thank you
Great straight forward lesson. I've played guitar a very long time and percussive fingerstyle has always been my favorite but im just now starting to incorporate some percussive fingerstyle into my practice exercises. This video gave me several mini exercises that as you said I can build upon once I have them down well. Thanks for this one, great tips.
One of the nicest melody!
Brilliant tutorial by Justin as usual
Hi Justin,
you are the Best!!!
Great Thanks for your effort. That's not to be taken for granted.
Keep it up!
Greetings from Germany
2nd full video of yours I've watched, and...
Holy GOD, you are amazing.
I don't say this lightly, but you are incredibly inspiring.
Really nice, great playing, great lesson. The sound you get from your hit technique is quite amazing and useful. (It doesn't sound quite like that when I do it.)
you could see in the first part, his face or may i say him is into the music
he is certainly a Master
hey Justin, you are my best teacher ever..big ups!
Really greatful for this, u must be the best teacher out there. Anycase for me cuz what u learning out is exactly what i want to play and all of it on one place. And watching ur turtorials u make it easy and fun to learn. Just had to say thanks to u for the amazing work!
best fingerstyle technique ever ! ! !
in my humbleous opinion :D
you are why I watch these videos instead of pay for it. Appreciate it, keep them comin man
Thanks Justin for this vid. This technique will expand my ideas a lot further. You rock dude!
Wow, this video is exactly what I needed. Great!
you just can't help but love this guy
I love how you weren't sure how to start, so you emotionally said Hey.. I have the same problem when I play, the emotion that I was playing first comes out in my voice. Love it. Great lesson too, I went on a tangent, I apologize.
Greetings Justin and people! I just want to thank you for that wonderful lesson justin. And those who r still trying, never give up, it's very easy to play. Just practice and u will see :) i started practicing only the percussion for a week, then the rest became very easy! it has been one month since i started learning. I you need, i can make a little video to show you ^^

Sweet. You seem to understand how much talk is needed and stop right there. Your demonstration is clear. Good job.
The slaps on a nylon stringed guitar sounds even more better than an acoustic guitar! Because the tension is lesser on a classical guitar than a steel-string guitar!
Magic as always Justin. Great breakdown of a complicated technique I 've been struggling with
Lovin it, great lesson dude, been wanting to learn this style for ages... :)
A great lesson well taught.
The 'concept' behind this excellent lesson will stay with me 'forever'.
Thank you, so very much, justin. :)
One of my favorite lessons
Ive been waiting for a lesson like this since I first started trying to play 'Papa George' By Tommy Emmanuel. I love this style. Its so upbeat and unique. Thanks for the lesson Justin!!!!
Just one thing: thank you!
Justin is simply amazing....
i myself am a guitar teacher and u really have helped me a lot....amazing u r...
Absolutely brilliant!!
REALLY helpful! Thank you so much this has been the best video I can find about this sort of technique, I've been dying to learn it! Great video! :)
Brilliant Stuff pal - just love this style of playing - the opener is a real attention grabber - well down and thanks for all of your effort.
SP
Thanks Justin, I am a long time fan.Love from India.
Good instructional video, definitely difficult to master getting clear notes on the strike beat. John Mayer's "Stop This Train, and "Heart of Life", and "Who Says" all feature a similar picking style. The technique is the same, but the lick is different. I suggest learning all three of those if you want to have something to practice. Heart of Life and Who Says are easier than Stop This Train, btw.
No joke this is awsome..thanks Justin
Thank you I had been searching for videos on how to do that snare sound and eventually I found yours. That was REALLY helpful :]
beautiful melody and not too heavy, thanks justin!
Great lesson and super style. Thank you! Karlheinz
Thanks Justin...for your valuable knowledge and time...much appreciated 👍
Excellent lesson. Thank you very much.
You're the best, Justin

This is great! Great teacher.
This was really enlightening and clearly explained! Thanks so much, Justin.
I love Igor!...I love Justin!!
awesome. yes neil young does this. see Cowgirl in the Sand. I will be doing little else for 2 weeks. thanks?
that C G Am F chord used at the start seems to be in every pop song nowadays. nice technique though, sounds really good on that guitar.
i think this technique is very creative. thanks for the awesome lesson, man!
Dude thanks very much for this! Been looking for a tutorial on this for a while!!!!
Justin, you play the Fchord with only your ring finger and that allows you to play the melody note with your pinky, thats not fair!!! But this is an awesome lesson as always!
i really enjoyed this, ive been looking for a lesson in this style ill be looking at your other vids for sure
This is just beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
I think I should add this to my learning.
I like the Sound of your guitar.
beautiful playing cheers Justin
Thank you Justin.
Right on Justin...... I like it ...Mich
Great lesson; thank you!
Awesome lesson, loving it. Keep up the amazing work. Thank you.
Excellent lesson

I'd been doing this ever since you did that lesson on From Katie's Window. =D
Technique is often used by Andy McKee as well.
Good stuff mate, keep 'em coming!

Sungha jung inspired me to play without my plectrum
very very good tutorial; i thank you very much !!!
Great Lesson as always! Thanks !
Thank you, Justin. Learned so much from you!
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.
This sounds lovely. Even sounds somewhat like John Mayer.
