Miles Kreuger presents us with a vivid prism in which to see SHOWBOAT. Much thanks to him for explaining SHOWBOAT's importance so succinctly and engagingly.

I wish the 1936 version were available on DVD or TH-cam, even to buy. You would think the Copyright holder would want the production more widely available, if for no other reason than its excellence, for its historical place in the American Musical.

it's been shown on t.c.m and it's on DVD . The unrestored 1928 version also exists, for years half of the talking sequences dialog was lost so time warner had to use subtitles for what the people were talking about .recently the dialog for the rest of the talking was found, but has not been remastered yet. this is typical of warner home video.

Fascinating! Pretty certain the Al Jolson musical of 1925 included blacks and whites performing together on stage.

He's quoting the lyrics to the verse of "Old Man River" which is sung by the character Joe, an African-American laborer in the show. It's a song about racial inequity.

MooPotPie just because he isn’t going to go to jail or something doesn’t mean it’s okay. It is not okay for a white person to say the n word. It is an offensive slur. If you can’t understand that then you are racist.

While I agree that the word is potent and offensive, one must always consider the context in which it, or any other potentially toxic word, is uttered.
When Chevy Chase used it in an SNL sketch with Richard Pryor, it was hilarious. When a bigot uses it to insult someone, it is hate speech. Funny as a punchline, but never as a punch.
It's all about context and intent.
As for "white" people -remember that this is an English word which predates its application as a slur against African people. You cannot insist that a European not use a word invented by Europeans, even if it offends you.
Separate rules for different people is the opposite of equality.
