Well, no wonder everyone loves SHOWBOAT! The greatest musical, filmed or staged, ever. Thanks for the info, and I'm pleased that you improved your audio.
So many iconic scenes, never surpassed: Ol' man River, Can't Help Lovin' that Man of Mine, and my personal favorite, which I think is the greatest filmed song in the history of cinema: Bill. Makes me cry every time I see it.
I'm sorry to hear that your family lost the studio on that one! It worked out really well for us as a stage show in New York! If it's any consolation, Florenz Ziegfeld gambled away all of his money and left us with nothing, so in the end it didn't work out for us either...

An interesting note to MGM taking the 1936 Show Boat out of circulation is that when Disneyland opened in 1955, they got Irene Dunne to christen the Mark Twain Riverboat, not anyone from the 1951 version. That shows just how attached people still were to the classic, despite the 1951 version's financial and critical success. And deservedly so, it's a great film. Perhaps it feels a little long in parts, but it definitely earns its place as one of the greatest Hollywood musicals, alongside MGM's Eddy-MacDonald and Warner's Busby Berkeley films.

Great contribution as always. Your uncle (Great, Great, Great uncle if we're honest) seems like such a nice guy. His son too. I'm sure there are still nice guys in Hollywood. At least I hope so. Please keep up the great work. If you ever run out of Universal stories you could continue on with other Hollywood tales like Katrina Longworth does in her podcasts. Many of us would love to hear that.

Thank you for sharing your family history and connection with Universal Studios. I commend your family for being one of the first to make mutli-racial films and give people a chance to become great artists. They were practicing DEI before there ever was such a thing. How cool!
I think you 'undersold' Whale here a bit. He was Junior's pet director, and they had an excellent relationship; Whale did beautiful work for the studio, and Junior trusted him and gave him the leeway to make BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN as he wanted, and of course it turned out a masterpiece, maybe the greatest horror film ever. But he did other kinds of films for Universal, not just horror or war films, and they were successful, too. Unfortunately they do not have still-bankable actors in the leads, and they've been out of general circulation for so long that they're forgotten. But the original WATERLOO BRIDGE (a 'weepie') and BY CANDLELIGHT (a 'high comedy') are both superb, and his others from that era are interesting too. There are two very good books on Whale, one of which emphasizes his gay perspective and the other is a more complete biography. Too bad there's not a book about Junior -- he seems to have had such an interesting and sad story. (I know there's a section of a book about him, but not a complete biography.) Anyhow, your videos are great. Keep it up. And thanks.
Wished you would have explained Showboat more. The book, the first Broadway musical was phenomenal as most were just music hall/variety shows at this time. This was more like opera with dialogue. Carl Laemmle acquired the rights to film the book but I believe the musical rights were separate. I could be wrong but I know there was a of money to be made off this story. I love Edna Ferber stories.
I agree 100%, why when making a movie such as Showboat "screw"around with the story and commit the cardinal crime of changing the score?. The 1936 version changed very little .I urge people who may be interested to see the1936 version from Universal.
90 days to pay it back, or the Lender takes the studio? 90 days is nothing. No wonder Wall Street crashed a year or so later. It would have been great to have kept it in the family vs the draconian, predatory investors. 6 months would have been fair or a year at least.
@AntoniaCarlotta I can see that happening and the story of your going back in time in itself would make an incredible movie 🎬 🎞 🎥 Imagine a stargate prop that turned out to have been a real portal shipped over from Iran
The prop is in an abandoned stage that's just used for storage You happen on it as a studio mogul sees this video and offers you to take some of your families belongings
Hate to hear your
family lost the studio, thanks for sharing thereason!

The irony that the movie that cost your family the studio was a major success.
Don't I know it! 😂😭

I love Showboat and as a Hollywood historian and preservationist, I think it's a very good movie

Carl Laemmle has a reputation for being a pretty decent man. Many people still have a high regard for
Universal's Showboat.
The 1936 version of Show Boat is one of the truly great movies of all time. It's far better than the plastic, glossy 1950's version.
An interesting note to MGM taking the 1936 Show Boat out of circulation is that when Disneyland opened in 1955, they got Irene Dunne to christen the Mark Twain Riverboat, not anyone from the 1951 version. Thanks for sharing this information that must be challenging for you to think about.
I still rate the 1936 film Showboat far ahead of the 1951 version that M.G.M released.
1936 version is far superior ❤
@richardmcmahon7466: Yes, but the 1936 version didn’t have AVA GARDNER, even though HELEN MORGAN was wonderful.
Antonia I love your passion for old Hollywood!

Carl Laemmle was a genius. I hope some of his silent films are restored.
Well, I'm thinking of starting a small studio myself.
Sad story. :-(

The best Musical Movie ever made
MGM version doesn't cut it and they ruined the ending

If I ever get the ability to time travel, I'll go back in time and renegotiate the terms of that loan!
