Shock nr 24: Belgians prefering to walk instead of using the car. That might be for Brussels but outside, they even use the car to bring their kids to school, they would even prefer to drive the car into the classroom if that would be possible to bring their child. Belgians are really hooked to their cars.

Bonjour, being half Indian and half Belgian, wanted to say that what ever you said is valid, but the tittle is incorrect. To me, what you highlighted are the differences between developed & developing country like India, except the point about theft. It’s everywhere in major cities in world, moreover in major Indian cities like Mumbai or Delhi, there are scams which are more than theft.

The video should have the title "living in the Brussels agglomeration". About 1 million people live there. There are another 10 million Belgians who don't live in the Brussels region. In case you didn't know...

General doctors (huisartsen) are available within a week! Sure you have to make appointment for that but you will be helped within a week (or in case of worrying condition can be within a day.) Specialists can take longer to get hold of (If there is no emergengy). It's really not that bad!

This is a very good explanation, which for all most all aspects applies to Amsterdam as well. There are two differences: you won't have a language issue. In the Netherlands the Dutch automatically switch to English and a lot of signs are in English (too much/many as far as I am concerned). The other thing is that in the Netherlands you will be shocked by the amount of bikes for all kinds of use. I.e. short-, mid- and long distance for many purposes. While living in "Mumbay at the Amstel" (that is town below Amsterdam), I recommend to pay extra attention to the following: 1) Separation of waste. E.g. don't pack biological waste in plastic when you throw it into biological waste container. 2) Greeting people on the street is appreciated (don't feel obliged). But that works better if you don't walk around talking to your smartphone all the time. (I have seen Indian people entering shopping centre's and going through shops and leaving while talking to the devices all the time. That will be less appreciated.

Wow this was like our entire Europe experience summed up in few minutes. Very imp info not just for the ones planning to move but also travellers because it takes a while to understand and adjust. Love the point about we representing our entire community and if we try to blend in without friction it would make us more acceptable and make visa etc easier for us! 😍

What show describes is the culture of Brussels, not the culture of Flanders.

As a belgium (flemish) person. Breakfast is normally not sweet pastries. It is definitely sweet in most households once a week (usually Sunday). Normaly it is bread with charcuterie, cheese or jams (are sweet) or other spread.

About the pick-pocketing... don't you have to be mindful of you wallet, phone, bag everywhere you are these days, no matter the country.

Many of the "shocks" that you are descrinibing here would probably be valid anywhere in Europe. May I note something? Your experience is centered on big city life in Brussels, it's a bit different outside the capital - such as people using their cars much more.

I just came across your videos. I really enjoy how you present my country with the good and the bad parts of it. Very interesting to hear about the cultural differences, shocks for Indian expats.
