2 somewhat pricey cards I would strongly recommend:
-Cauldron of Souls: One-sided boardwipe you can use whenever
-Gift of Doom: It specifically says "attach to a creature", not "target", so you can give Horobi indestructible.
Also you can cast Wail of the Nim or another regen effect to create a "bubble" that will allow you to equip Boots to it.

Unfortunately it's a $15 card but for those willing to pay or already have it, Shadowspear is a helpful card. You won't be able to equip your creatures with it but you can cause your opponents creatures to lose hexproof and indestructible with it.
One of my favorite cards got 2 loved it the moment I saw it

I’d like to say that I picked it up at my shop for just $3. You never know until you ask. Sometimes shops do not update their prices to recent price spikes. Doesn’t happen that often because of the interwebs now. But it still can happen!! Go out there and get to hunting!!

My friend has a horobi deck and I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT

Always interested in these stories. Does he play it alot? Have few or no other decks? I have some mean decks but play them once every couple game nights and I think my group is OK with them. Stacks, combo, grind sac deck, etc.
Agreed. I too have a friend with this built in paper, and if he gets the "lock" established, it makes gameplay miserable because no one can do anything really and he can't even really win the game.
Baton of morale is probably the first and last time anyone will ever have to know what banding does in a commander game
I made a Horobi deck for my friend and I included Helm of Chatzuk as well for the sole reason that you can induce death by banding
Nah. I have a Reki, History of Kamigawa deck that runs Adventurers' Guildhouse. The only viable use for that terrible card.

God I love Horobi. I broke mine down for other decks, but for sure one of the most fun and aggravating decks I've ever made. Touch of darkness is the star for me. A hilariously effective boardwipe
Man, you missed Cauldron of Souls in this deck. It's a repeatable boardclear, and should be the Golden Pig in my opinion. Everything is destroyed before they gain Persist, and you can target infinite creatures. Anyway, great decktech!
It's $3 so over budget but was my first thought too
10:56. Unfortunately, neither Aphotic Wisps nor Nighthaze will draw you a card if the creature gets destroyed as a result of being targeted. If there are no legal targets left when a spell is about to resolve, the entire spell fizzles and NONE of the effects resolve. So in the case of Aphotic Wisps, if the target dies (e.g., to Horobi's ability) before the spell resolves, you don't get to draw a card (see rule 608.2b).

Tetzimoc it’s honestly the freaking best. And it sucks that he can’t really be a commander. Honestly I like him enough to wanna build a deck around him and ask if my various pods would be OK house ruling his effect to work in the command zone
On that note, Mitch if you’re reading this too, it would be super cool if you did a deck where tetzimoc is the secret commander like you just did with deep glow skate. I can’t even imagine what that would look like but I know it would be a really cool build challenge and I know you’re the perfect guy to build a deck as crazy as that @The Commander’s Quarters
A channel called “EDH Deckbuilding” did a deck tech around Tetzimoc
Probably Sidisi as commander and grab Tetzimoc. or lots of tutors for Command Beacon and self return effects similar to what Gonti plays.
Nethertborn Altar can kind of make it a thing....

Love the deck! I just built this commander for my friend but the hopefully creative win cons are Endless Whispers and Bronze Bombshell or Phage the Untouchable.
An upgraded version of this deck with my nice cards will do wonders for losing my friends.
One of my favorite for my own Harobi deck is "Touch of Darkness" its a 1 cmc instant, that Basically reads, destroy all creatures you choose once Harobi is on the board. It does however cost $5.00 roughly.

Horobi! I'd given up on the deck but you've inspired me to give it another shot.
Gift of Doom is a way to make Horobi indestructible. Since morphing doesn't use the stack it's possible to enchant Horobi without dying to its own trigger.
I may be wrong, but I think Aphotic Whisps and Nighthaze can't both destroy a creature and draw a card. With Horobi out, it's trigger resolves before the spells do, so they fizzle. That may have been what you meant but not certain.
Little pricey, but Revel in Riches seems like a good fit. Every enemy creature destroyed is either mana or one step closer to winning the game.
You can also slide in Cauldron of Souls for a surprise win if nobody realizes the combo. On the opponent's end step, target all enemy creatures with Cauldron of Souls to destroy them with Horobi and create treasure tokens. As long as you have 10 treasures before your upkeep, you win the game.
Tetzimoc can also pull this off, but requires up to 10 untapped black mana.

Got this deck for $30 *after* shipping thanks to some great LGS deals on half the cards. Was already thinking of this commander (among one or two others) for a budget mono black commander so this made my decision way way way easier.

Gift of doom is amazing in this deck. When you morph it, you can attach to Horobi without targeting!
Touch of Darkness would be a great include. One black to target as many creatures as you want. One sided board wipes are wonderful with this deck, especially after shadowspearing while they have a Shalai and then killing/stealing their entire board
Some excellent upgrades would be a nim deathmantle to keep horobi around, same with endless whispers.
Grave betrayal turns all of the removal into theft.
And black market turns all of the removal into ramp. So does revel in riches, and that is a wincon that works with the game plan of the deck.
Cauldron of souls is a selective board wipe with horobi out, or boardwipe protection when horobi isn't on board.

My trying to build this commander to combat my friends CEdh Orvar deck. Are there ways to protect Horobi without killing it? As Orvar has lots of things that target creatures it will effectively shut down the deck while also providing ammo for him to instant remove Horobi. Thoughts? Thanks

The best card you can put in a Horobi deck is : "Touch of Darkness"
You basicaly make a one sided wrath for 1 black mana at instant speed. Yeah pretty Savage. I love my deck, you can easely make it social and bargaining the life of your opponent's creatures !

An alternate win con for my crummy Horobi deck is a 3 card "combo". Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Kormus Bell, and Massacre Worm. It destroys all my enemies lands and they lose 2 hit points per land they had.
Kormus Bell is the most glorious win condition in Horobi. Haha

I have a Hirobi deck and it is more cheap instant and sorcery based with lots of big demons. Isochron Scepter is an amazing combo piece with the right instants to imprint
Horobi is one of my favorite commanders just because of all the weird unplayable cards that suddenly become amazing when Horobi is on the field
As someone who as been playing Horobi for a while, Dont underestimate how much you will need card draw or recursion in this deck. That being said this build is pretty close to what I have except for a few of the more expensive cards I have put in there.
I just realized that Raven of Fell Omens works well with this deck.
I also enjoy Peer into the Abyss. It pairs well with Underworld dreams
Cauldron of Souls is a great addition to this deck.

Yes and no. Opponents can take advantage of ETB effects, so be careful on what creatures you target with that.

For anyone wanting a bit of protection for Horobi, you can morph Gift of Doom onto horobi and it won’t cause horobi’s trigger and kill itself.
I like that it's a direct counter to vultron strats
My playgroup is trying to get everyone to have a mono deck of each colour, I think I just found my mono-black. Gonna be subbing in a Touch of Darkness to destroy all opponents creatures for single black and Cauldron of Souls to be able to repeatedly tap and destroy all opponents creatures. Probably throw a few other fun things in there but I know I'm going to get some looks when I play the Oasis and then a few more looks when the penny actually drops.
I've thought about building Horobi, but I always get to thinking there's absolutely no way to protect it from its own effect in mono black, which is the main problem. Never mind other creatures being targeted, the fact that anything targeting it will cause it to be destroyed is a huge problem, as that counts things like Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves. You would have to somehow give it indestructible first and the only thing in mono black that does that without targeting it, to my knowledge, is an Eldrazi Monument. But you need a lot of creatures to support that. And presumably if you're building Horobi then you want to be focused on stuff that targets stuff and not on amassing a bunch of creatures.
I also get to thinking that Horobi is better in the 99 of other decks, like for example in a Kenrith deck (i.e. pay 1 and a green to place a +1/+1 counter on target creature becomes pay 1 and a green to destroy target creature), and to use Horobi's effect in general outside of its own colors for the most potential abuse of this card. I could still build around him trying to work with just black of course and revolving around swarming with a bunch of creatures that target things maybe. Or cards that swarm creatures, tutor for the Monument, then use other effects to target the opponent's creatures. But that's just not that viable I wouldn't think. It's janky at best because if you put your full focus on targeting things, well, someone just targets Horobi and then you're toast. He gets countered by so much and I'm not even talking about counterspells.
Sangromancer and Unspeakable Symbol is a repeatable board wipe that you can use to hypercharge Vampire Scrivener from New Capenna.
My meme win condition is a Stuffy doll that is a proxy tonberry, equip vorpal sword, walk, walk, walk.... doink!

just a fact !!! retribution of the ancients to be able to use it , you must have +1/+1 counter on a creature you control to be able to use since it's part of it's activation cost !!! sure X can be 0 , but you still need 1 creature with that requirement to be able to use it !!
Nice deck, love it, there is also another spirit which is very underrated which i like and i build a deck around, Hokori, Dust Drinker i made the deck full on land destruction, stax and artifacts.

That's a really powerful ability. Definitely make sure people know what they are signing up for when they sit down to play against that... or you're liable to get a reputation.

Adding a Shadowspear and get rid of glaring spotlight and then you can deal with heatproof and indestructible.

Black Dragon from the AFR set would be pretty solid with an ETB trigger that would destroy 3 creatures while Horobi is out.

I had a Horobi deck for about 5 years, it got so much hate from my playgroup that I eventually just took it apart and made Shirei instead. He still is in the 99 tho!

My Horobi deck is one of the meanest things ever. I run an Urborg and a Kormus Bell to kill all of my opponents lands with cauldron of souls or Touch of Darkness

Do you have a budget suggestion to get rid of indestructible creature? I have found shadowspear but it his not budget friendly!
I feel like if you're ready to up the budget, this deck could really use a lot more ramp to be viable, or alternatively some reanimation. Cabal Coffers, Cabal Stronghold, Magus of the Coffers, Crypt Shade, Bubbling Muck, maybe some treasure generation, the works. This is because Horobi will draw a *lot* of hate, so that commander tax is gonna pile up at lightning speed, and he's not that cheap to begin with.
Nim Deathmantle's second ability can also save him, as it does not target. And another way you can protect him is Eldrazi Monument, which renders all of your creatures indestructible and thus immune to Horobi's effect. Slumlord should be pretty good at keeping the monument fed. Another combo I can think of is Sudden Spoiling, on *yourself.* You can use that to foil someone's attempt to counter Horobi with something nonlethal, such as a bounce or a tap effect, and use the turn it affords you to slap some protection on him.
Hex parasite can target any number of creatures as long as you can pay 2 life each time so no mana needed at least x=0

I like the card Revel in Riches in this deck. it's free treasures for playing your deck, and it's another unorthodox wincon.
I played against a horobi player once. it was a neat deck, but I ended up cloning one of his targeting artifacts pretty early on, so whenever he played his commander I just tapped and destroyed it. :/
I thought tergrid has a target on her back but horobi is on a different level. :)

The main problem with this deck is that it's super reliant on Commander being out. Any spot removal instantly sends it back to command zone, you have to be careful while playing it
Are there cards on a non budget that help?
I got this deck a found out that this is true very quickly. I basically remade it with a lot of tutors and mana ramp and a few different weird win cons that only work with horobi.
Honestly surprised that Kuro, Pitlord was not mentioned, in this deck it says pay one life destroy target creature.
9 mana and costs 4 black to keep him each upkeep
I built Horobi years ago for the lols. It was fun but only for me. I'd clear the board with cauldron of souls. The only problem is that Horobi cannot protect himself (equipment targets) so all anyone had to do was play a rogue's passage and use my own deck against me. :P
Edit: have watched the video now. Aside from the newer cards and the winning combos this is essentially the same deck I built... I even had Tetzimok. The win cons really help. Perhaps it's time to bring Horobi out of retirement.
Now that I've actually watched the vid, I may need to rebuild my Horobi and put the weird wincon in. Or put the weird wincon in a Shadrix I"m making. Probably won't be as effective, but just as fun

How to protect horobi?
Cauldron of souls is a must have $2.50 upgrade for this deck, it's a repeatable one sided board wipe.
One time a friend of mine tried this commander and me and everybody else in the table had a land that targeted creatures. He never played it again.
Touch of Darkness would be a could 1 mana one sided board wipe

with horobi on the board, if you use one of them, the horobi's ability will trigger and kill the creature. So, since the spell lost the target, it will be countered. So, you generally will have OR the draw OR the removal, not both....Right?
Losing the target nulls that part of the spell, but it still has the text "Draw a card." You still do as much of the spell as you can even though the target was lost.
Look up the card Hex in the Gatherer for an example and read the card rulings.

A spell frizzles when all the targets becomes " invalid". Hex have multi targets. The spells mentioned are single target.
So you should not draw the card if the horobi ability resolves "normaly"

I've been running a tuned down horobi deck for a couple years now and my absolute favorite card ever is endless whispers. Is it good? No, but it's funny as hell.
What about pairing this card with Toxrill? Every endstep the ability to add slime counters on every opponent creature triggers, so boardwipe every turn!
Toxrill doesn't "target" it says "each"

My playgroup loves my Horobi deck, and by love I mean they do not love it at all.
I will say I have had this commander as a deck together for a year or so and I can safely say you should try to explain to your playground you are playing casual stax.
I have a cycling and blinking kathril deck I've been building. I think this commander would be a good add into the 99 after getting hexproof or indestructible counters out. Anyone know if kathrils ability counts as targeting?
Wait retribution of the ancients works with no counter?
Indeed it does, unless the card explicitly says "X cannot be zero" you can always choose X=0 for a spell/ability with an X in it

I have a friend who has Koma deck. How does this interact with Koma's ability if he targets Koma making him indestructible?
Koma’s ability to gain indestructible does NOT target himself, therefore, that ability does not proc Horobi.
However, if a player were to activate or cast something that says “give TARGET creature indestructible until end of turn”, then Horobi’s ability would go onto the stack on top of the effect to make it indestructible, destroying the creature BEFORE the indestructibility effect resolves. Hope that helps
