How To Hunt AFTER The Rut

  • When the rut is over there are still some incredible opportunities to hunt, including the secondary rut. The stress of the primary whitetail rut leads to outstanding afternoon food source hunting opportunities! While rutting bucks recover from chasing does, does are recovering from being chased. However, after a couple weeks of whitetail rut recover time, the secondary rut begins and is in my opinion, the missed deer hunting time in the whitetail woods! The annual whitetail rut may be over, but there is absolutely no need to panic! Here is how to hunt the annual post rut....

Jeff, you are the best in the business. Absolutely love your videos. You're the real deal because you are about knowledge and strategy...not selling products and the latest gimmicks. Thank you for this video. I hunt a small property that I live on (30 acres) in Southern MN. I had high expectations for this season based on deer I was getting on camera. After I had a no-shot close encounter with my target buck the day before gun opener, my season felt like it went downhill. Deer sightings drastically went down. I went through my whole gun season without seeing much. I was so frustrated I was ready to give up. Your video got my spirits up again and hope for the remainder of my bow season. Thank you!

Got my biggest buck to date last Nov.24th secondary rut. Was hunting alfalfa field edge with a hardwood mast staging area behind me. Does were feeding in the hardwoods just waiting to hit the alfalfa after dark but three bucks came smashing thru the staging area and pushed the does right past me which in turn brought the bucks into my stand area. This particular buck went through a series of snort wheezes and was very aggressive towards the does because they were not putting up with this guys nonsense. I've seen this late rut first hand for the first time last year and got a few days I can hunt in the next week and a half.
Thanks for your videos. They do really help.

He had a great time and thanked me a million times for tolerating his cane and the bum leg this year. Don't think i have hunted with him in the same blind since i was 16! Hope to get up there for some muzzle loading. I seen some does but no opportunities for a good shot. Keep up the great job.

I've experienced the same scenario, with does clearing the field. Eventually they came back and I had 4 does and 4 bucks in the field. Had 24 🦃 an hour before.
Your right about those afternoon food sources. Was in a club last year, 3 people missed the same buck on our biggest plot. I went to our second biggest plot and got him.

That would be incredibly helpful. I lease 2 separate 30 acre parcels and I'm not allowed to plant anything on them. The surrounding parcels are pretty high pressure. Just looking for ways to draw in and hold mature bucks. Thanks 👍👍

I didn't hunt my UP land on opening day because the wind direction was wrong. The next two days we saw a lot of deer, the wife decided she was meat hunting and took does, but the young bucks didn't seem to care they kept coming through. I saw more (young) bucks than ever in two days. I still haven't hunted two stands in the back, but I haven't seen any mature bucks on the cameras, I think I'll save them for next year as plenty of bucks to grow hanging around now, thanks for the concepts.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Thanks alot , I'm starting to use some of your tips ! I'm hunting an area I know really well , it's hollowed ground to me , my grandparents built a chalet write in the area in 1968 it's still occupied, there gone . I walked through a neighbors field yesterday write past it with permission from there old neighbor 85 years old who I visit. I just like to look at it and think about the old times and amazing Hollidays they put on there.Going tonight again up on a Ridgeline were they cut up through regularly from the edge of a big field past some pines up to the hardwoods were there are a bunch of accorn trees . It's a special area and pretty diverse with the pine River near by and 2 nice creeks. If you ever want to hunt public lands in Wexford county Michigan I know several pretty vast sections intamatley , I couldn't be a deer guide by a long shot , but I could be a "terrain intelligence officer " for you 😀 It's a very neat area . I've even seen a badger in the area 1x , had coyotes half circle me when camping there and go nuts , I chased them off with alot of gun fire and yelling , heard wolfs 1 night , and had huge bear visit my tent on 2 legs one night , talk about freaked out ! Anyhow I live in the area for the woods , not the pay ! Have had alot of very cool adventures and life experiences in the area I suppose I'm pretty lucky to have a place that feels like home again .

I know my timing is off with this, but I needed to put it in a current video. I'm trying to get my mix and strategy straight for next year with a food plot. I've never made a plot before. I recently put a mock scrap by my stand, and WOW. Thank you for that! Got lot's of attention and bucks I've never had on camera. I'm in a 40 with family in other stands. It's all wooded. About 1/4 is swamp. I'm wondering about adding a waterhole as well, but you make it clear not to food plot and waterhole. Would like a deeper explanation since I want attraction by my stand and I think food plot is better if I need to choose. I cannot cut down trees because of tax stuff on our land. Sort of valley in front of me though. Sorry for the long comment. Hope I can get a bit of your time. You are a smart man. Your fellow mid Wisconsin hunter, Ryan

No luck this go around, but I did spot a new ridiculously large fresh scrape near my setup. It's still mid rut here by me. Gonna take some apples and check em into the area and broadcast a bit of double duty corn too to see if i can get him out. In the open longer into the sunrise. Land owner has pics of him at about 5, 6 am on the property. Not to mention a little for estrus scent as well near the scrape and trail it out in the field. Also working with killing as muchbof my scent possible and trailing some buck scent with me through to my stand and dropping the pad 20 yards short after curling towards the doe setup. Would be next weekend before I get out there. Should I do this Friday night before I go Saturday morning again and watch it unfold?

Hey Jeff. Could you please make a video about accessing a property that is surrounded by Ag. fields on three sides while the back side is all woods that butts up to the neighbors. In the morning it has worked most of the time to access during gray light, but at night the deer are always on the fields and it is extremely difficult to get out without spooking those deer. Also. It is difficult because there are two different plantings in the field around us, so when one field gets plowed under the deer will find a way to the other. It makes defining movement very difficult for us. I don’t know if you would recommend being picked up in a truck in this situation or not. Thank you.

Hey Jeff. Love your channel. Always have. I'm in the pine barrens of rural South Jersey. Question. Had 3 big bucks(6, 8, and non typical 11)on camera this fall(never got to bow hunt). As recently as one week ago during the rut I had a monster double drop tine 11 pointer pop up. Point is, the past week there's MAJOR traffic and scrapes and rubs in my stand but the camera shows me nothing but small bucks and tons of does. Do them big monster bucks tend to only be around for the rut or will they possibly re emerge post rut for muzzleloader season in 2 weeks do you think? Thanks Jeff.

Love your videos! Quick question for you if you have time to answer. I live in ky and it’s currently nov19. The past two weekends Iv had to hunt have been very disappointing because I feel like I should be seeing all the rut activity. I have yet to shoot a target buck and Iv went all season being extra cautious to not spook the area. It seems the property has gotten less and less appealing as the season has gone on. We haven’t been taking deer or spooking the area I just don’t understand how it could turn off like a light switch and everyone else is bragging about how awesome their rut has been. I’m hunting private land with 1000 acres of unhunted property around me so it’s very low pressure. I was seeing tons on the camera and on my sits in sept-October but the past 3 weeks have been a complete bust. Is this a common issue during the rut? It seems like the opposite of what (should) be happening. I get it that these are animals but it just seems like their unpredictability has been turned into not seeing much of anything. I’d love to hear your thoughts about it. Also I was very touched by your tribute to your late father. I’m very sorry for your loss and my wife and I will be praying for your family.

Will it even be worth it to plant a spring/summer food plot since the beans are growing and i’m in northern New York so there is plenty of food. Hey I'm a wny hunter, I have a huge thicket probably 10 acres and an open hardwoods section about half the size on the backside its set in between a creek and a soy bean field there's always doe in the thicket and ive figured out how to get around them without spooning them on an old mowed path that I cleaned up last season during bow season I only had buck come through during the afternoon and during the rut there was even less activity during the a.m. this seems to be opposite of what ive been learning from your videos any suggestions or tips on how I should approach this area during the second rut phase with my gun I'm waiting to hunt this location die to moderate pressure on surrounding properties and I'm trying to give a big 9 point and an even bigger 8 point a safe area with no human activity for the first week or so of gun season here in NY I'm hunting in a climber tree stand that I have pre set in a tree on the esge of creek so on days with a NW. Wnw. Or a north wind my scent gets pushed up a ravine that is to steep for deer to travel I'm watching over about 40 yards of hardwood that but up to an almost impenetrable thicket that goes gradually up hill to the soy beans. Hopeful for a reply and any tips or suggestions and I hope i gave enough info for you to do so. Thabks for the videos!

Rut is just getting fired 🔥 up here in central North Carolina !
The pre rut starts prior to about November 15th and the rut peaks threw Thanksgiving and trickles out through January ! Juvenile delinquent bucks are chasing and harassing does now and the one mature target 🎯 🦌 buck I’ve bee hunting breeds & feeds in dark hours and is a recluse and very seldom daylights and he has had a single doe that seems to have came to him and his bedding area because she comes out feed alone and he hangs back until dark so he’s not pressuring her to stay so maybe he has his safe haven and the does know he’s a dominant mature buck and he doesn’t have to chase , he leaves no satellite scrapes or random rubs and he’s a old smart deer ! He never busts out when he’s spooked he quietly sneaks out like a ninja 🥷 and the does just bust out and he is definitely one of a kind and takes up a lot of space in my head …when doe family groups blow and snort at a buck and run and the young juvenile bucks keep chasing and harassing them does that mean they are all not receptive or just the lead nanny doe wants no part of the harassing young bucks ?

You said something about a second rut in December? I’ve never heard of this before. When about in the month do you suspect this to happen? Early or late in the month? And what type of tactic would you use to get on them? Stick to the woods or get on a food source?

Does that haven't been bred, and oftentimes (where I hunt) the smaller does will be in estrus again from mid December to January 1st when our season ends. I go where the does are. The mornings are kinda mixed, but we find the December does like the pines for the mushrooms that seem to sprout then in the AM and the food plots in the afternoon

for those asking, check your state biologist and even university studies on rut times. here in PA or this geographical area based on state biologist and penn state study over many years on road kill doe in spring, most doe go into their 48 estrus (peak rut) during the photoperiod of nov 15th. same time every year give or take a day. this goes for every state, it will always biologically be the same.

The great thing about grunting is that it is very low impact and not a real high spook factor. So natural.
For me personally, I only grunt when I am attempting to get a buck to come closer...that I feel is not already moving my way. I carry my grunt call for the entire season.

The cool thing is when the weather warms up and they stick around. I've seen the same doe family group migrate 3 times...big snow, melt, big snow, melt...they go back and forth like a yo-yo. Keeps the bucks around longer. Hope this warm front is hitting you guys right now too! They don't want to be in the deer yard. Instead they have to. So when it warms up they typically move back if there is a good melt.

@@MrRdvs87 as someone who hunts the south, I've always read that rut is late and runs an extended period because of mild winter conditions that don't contribute to a high mortality rate in fawns. Up north a fawn born late doesn't bulk up enough to make it through the harsh conditions of winter. First deer I killed was in Minter, Alabama. 2007. He is on my wall. Mid January, bucks running does everywhere, great memories!
