Ikegami's spiderman has a very clear anti-capitalism vibe. Until 70s the Japanese left was very strong, and many manga/anime contained thinly veiled progressive aspects.

Also that it shows how the alternate Spider-Man is only attacking the oil company for his personal vendetta and to be a popular star, that he doesn't actually care about any of what he's saying. The actual line it is going to for is cynicism, that people in modern society only care about themselves and are monsters on the inside. For some chapters it is about the lack of meaning in people's lives. Another major theme in it, is shame.

Yes he is regularly depressed. but his strength and resilience through those relatable and difficult times is why spider-man is inspiring. Spider-Man Manga the original One Punch Man lol. In all seriousness though this is 100% when you got full control on an IP that respects the origin and diverts later on to be it's own story while keeping the core of the character intact which is awesome. This is a VERY dark depressing Spider-Man. The one we got on No Way Home isn't depressing enough, you want a literal beatdown of a super heroes heart it's this manga.

I often get bummed on non-Japanese readers breaking down Japanese manga bc they miss a lot of cultural and industry differences that really influence the medium, but overall it was rad. The Yuki Onna yokai is awesome, but the ending of the story sucked. Missed the AMPO riots of 69 when it was written, which were almost a character in the stories. Vehicular homicide: There were so many deaths by car accident during that time that it was a common theme in Japanese manga--especially horror. Modern urbanization was new--Tokyo, or the "big city", was also an important backdrop to the stories. There's a bunch of things, but whatever. This is still a great vid! Thanks!

This is very interesting. Marvel could've make this a live-action movie outside MCU. Sorta like "The Joker" which takes place on another whole different universe (outside the DCEU). Making this a standalone movie. Imagine a spiderman movie with 70s yakuza-styled movie. Dark and depressing.
Wolf Guy is definitely a cash cow franchise in Japan, but still little known in the rest of the world. That said, the franchise originated with a depressing novel which predated Teen Wolf by over a decade.

The Toei Company should've adapted this manga series into a live-action Spider-Man Trilogy of their own back in 2004 starring Tatsuya Fujiwara as Komori Yuu/Supaidāman and Nao Omori as Shiraishi/Electro.

Ngl I enjoyed this manga way too much. I love how Yu rides the line of Dikto's somewhat spiteful teen Peter and a dark tortured hero like Devilman.
Well Yu actually appears int he spider-verse crossover event, of course not the movie but we still see him with all the other spidermen
