I love hydrangea season here in Japan. They are everywhere. My neighbor gave me a rooted cutting from one of her pink hydrangeas and I gave it one application of used coffee grounds way back last year and this year the blooms were a gorgeous deep blue!
Did you add just the grounds or did you add the liquid also? I was given a hydrangea and I may be too late to save but an still trying. Help! Thanks from Pennsylvania USA.

This is down my alley. I love container planting. I currently have 3 Hydrangeas in pots. One of them is 20 years old. I have had to graduate it up to larger pots as the years progress. I wheel it into the garage every fall and water it off and on then bring it out in the spring. It's my baby since it was bought when my children were babies. It will be a sad day when it decides to leave. I also do the same thing with Hostas' in pots.
Does the garage have light over winter? Or do the plants do fine in dark while dormant? Also curious how cold the garage gets Thanks! 💚

Good to know I'm not alone in the struggle to keep hydrangeas alive. One dead. One given away. And one hanging on by a thread. Fingers crossed.
The background looks so aesthetically pleasing.

Hydrangeas are my absolute favorite! Ice storm in Texas did some damage to the one by my front door this year but it's come back and that was a bonus! It even gave me two new plants where the lower branches rooted on their own. I've had that one about 5 years.
I moved from a mountaintop in VA to San Antonio a few years back. Soil here is horrible so I kept many of my mophead cuttings in very large containers as well as all my oakleafs. They survived that awful freeze last winter here and bloomed beautifully. I plan to plant out the oakleafs this Fall under a young red oak by a part of deck. They grew at least a foot this year in containers in that location. Gatsby Moon, Gatsby Pink, and a Ruby Slippers. Wish me luck please!

The hydrangeas we planted last year are blooming profusely this year. So rewarding. I have learned so much watching your video's. My garden is only two years old and I look up your videos on everything. But, I almost broke my ankle trying to do the "Laura Hop" on a shovel. The way you jump on the shovel with both feet. guess I am still a novice!

Same sort of issue with alkaline/clay conditions here in 8b central Texas. Mine are also planted in containers. I've had several people here tell me not to bother growing them, but I can't not! 😍 have killed three hydrangeas so far, but I think I've got the hang of them now. Two Endless Summer that are thriving!

Well I always learn something new from Laura. Hydrangeas don’t need fertilizer after July. 🤔that’s good to know as I usually spray mine with weekly soluble.

Aaron and Laura, I’ve always been an “animal person, “ our family having raised everything from Labs to ostriches, and I loved all of it! With age and the ups and downs of cancer, I can no longer keep domesticated animals, but God graciously put us in a 6 acre forest full of critters on a live creek in north Texas. I started dabbling in gardening, making virtually every mistake you address in your videos, but once I found your channel, the gardening took off! My wonderfully supportive family helped with bringing in new soil, installing drip irrigation, planting, and encouraging me toward interest in my “green babies.” I bought so many four packs, six packs, nine packs 😩. When I discovered your channel mid-May, we started buying Proven Winners and other quality plants. Oh my! It (YOU!) made me believe that maybe I could really do this! 🪴 💪💚 On days when I physically can’t (chemo), your videos entertain, encourage, inspire, and yes, Laura, teach. 😉 Love, love, love! ❤️❤️❤️
My challenge is shade. Trees are a treasure in Texas, and we don’t take any out without serious consideration. I have two pots on either side of my north-facing front door, under a total tree canopy, each with the most pathetic hosta you have ever seen. Is there any succession of plants that I could keep in these pots for interest year around? Zero sun, zone 8. God bless y’all for doing your part to keep alive the America I knew growing up. 🙏❤️🦋 🪴 🇺🇸
My sentiments exactly. Because of circumstances and illness, in particular, cancer, I had given up my gardening dream. With Laura’s inspiration I too have begun gardening and enjoying the experience.
I'm praying that you have a speedy recovery. From a beautiful sunny Cape Town South Africa... That's what makes life more pleasurable. The strife we go through and then God reminds us how beautiful it is, with gifts, family, critters a forest, and most of all. Love.
Good for you, Cathy. Your property sounds just lovely. I'm up in Montana, zone 5a or 4b depending on the source. My 2/3 acre is on the top of cliffs near the Rockies. I have lupus and have been disabled since 2003. For the first ten years I was housebound and for the first three I couldn't even drive. Thank God for my husband, Jim, who took such good care of me and who sadly died in 2015. How blessed you are to have your family. My son lives near me and is a big help. Anyway, I garden and have gardened all along this illness. When I have long periods of being too ill to do anything, the garden suffers. Then I have a period of remission and the garden comes back to life. All you can do is what you can do. Watching gardening videos is a nice way to add beauty and positive energy to my day.

Good morning🍁 regarding the Japanese maple I would just cut the upper half with the sparse regrowth. I think the bottom half looks quite good on it’s own, the branches have a nice downward drift…would be a shame to toss that big of a maple 🙏🏻 here in Germany 🍁 are quite expensive this size…and I’ve seen worse 🤣

I bought three hydrangeas from the supermarket. Two were purple and turned gray brown (weird color). Although the blooms weren’t dead, I cut them all off then the leaves turned brown 😳. I trimmed one all the way back and left the leaves on one then, repotted both. I moved them on the side on my gazebo that gets only afternoon sun and they’ve put on so much new growth. I’m waiting for them to get established before transplanting into the ground...fingers crossed for next year. The third I purchased was blue and didn’t look like it was gonna survive but, I cut that one back (I didn’t have anything to lose) and repotted it...wow, it’s doing so well. None have new blooms but, I’m guessing next season will be a beautiful one.
You’ve given me so much inspiration. I’ve never had outdoor plants but, watching your videos has given me courage and incentive. I’m no longer afraid...if they live, they live..if not, you learn.

Planted a tiny Wee Bit Giddy this spring, gorgeous pink. Little darlin’ started blooming right away, even though the leaves were a little tattered from shipping. Since we’re moving to a condo within the month, I’ll be planting at least one in a pot to call my own.

I’m so happy to see your willow flowing in the background. Yesterday we had a 20 minute storm that took out our town playground’s 50 year old willow. It was heart breaking to see the tree that stood at the center of our park since my childhood and before lying on the ground.

Concrete is very Alkaline as well so you might want to try growing them in different containers if you are trying for blue blooms. We have acidic soil where I live but the hydrangeas planted near by concrete foundation are always pink no matter how much acidifier I add.

I have always been a little fearful of trying Hydrangeas in my garden. I too live in high desert climate (zone 6a) and just didn't think it was possible for them to grow and thrive here. After watching you explain in more detail the needs and wants of this beautiful plant, I think I'm going to give it a try. Thanks Laura for the great detail about about these lovely plants and helping me realize that it is possible!

I think I'm gaining confidence!!! Laura, you are convincing me to plant hydrangeas in containers. I love them I've just been intimidated by them because we get such harsh afternoon sun. But there is a nook in the garden where I might be able to give them a little bit of a reprieve from that super scorching late sun.
