    Have you ever root pruned your hydrangeas that are growing in pots? I planted two big limelight’s & they are already in a 26” huge pots which I don’t want to repot any bigger. I saw in a video that they do quite well this way. I’m going to try this.

      No, I haven't 😊. But indeed it's a great way to rejuvenate old plants! I think that Limelight is a bit large to be grown in pots🫣. Little Lime is a dwarf version so would be easier to tame, but I would love to hear back from you! Let me know how it goes, and good luck!

    Hi Dominika!! Thank you for the video 🥰, could I ask what will you do with the oxalis and the tuberous begonias in winter? Do you keep the bulbs of both of them for the next season?

    • @17m2garden
      @17m2garden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! Oxalis Iron Cross is winter hardy so it can stay outside, yes I will keep it, I will probably just repot it into different pot, but Begonias on the other hand are frost tender so you have to dig the tubers and store them indoors during winter if you want to keep them. It is worth keeping your favorite Begonias, because they bloom even more beautiful the following year.

    • @17m2garden
      @17m2garden  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! If you have an unheated garage or a basement where it stays cold but not too low below freezing, that's where you could overwinter them. Give them a splash of water every now and then, like once a month, during that time, so that the roots don't dry out completely.

    Is it safe to add the blue miracle grow powder to water for liquid fertilizer each week?

    • @17m2garden
      @17m2garden  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Yes, I think it even says on the packaging to use it every 7-14 days. And as for your other question - If you're watering it well but it's still turning brown, maybe it's planted in a too sunny location, macrophyllas enjoy morning sunlight but protection from the scorching afternoon sun.

      Hola, no hablo español y estoy usando el traductor de Google... pero depende de la Hortensia que tengas. Si es H.paniculata, podarla alrededor de un tercio o la mitad cada primavera, si es H.arborescens, cortarla hasta el suelo en primavera y si es H.macrophylla o H.quercifolia, nunca podarla o simplemente cortarla inmediatamente después terminó de florecer en verano. No olvides fertilizar y regar con frecuencia.

    • @17m2garden
      @17m2garden  ปีที่แล้ว

      The leaves are very similar on all types of Hydrangea, macrophyllas have thicker and more glossy leaves and quercifolia leaves resemble those of oak trees. But to correctly identify a plant, you need to see its reproductive organs, i.e. flowers 🌸

  • @Krisztina1978

    Do you leave your hydrangeas out for the winter?

    • @17m2garden
      @17m2garden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Hydrangeas are winter hardy and actually need that cold dormancy period in the winter to bloom beautifully the next year. Unless you live in a very cold climate (zone 6 and below) you don't need to protect them or bring them indoors. With H.macrophylla (mophead) you have to be careful in the spring as the late frost can damage the newly forming buds.

    I pruned my big leaf hydrangea about 3 years ago, when we moved into our now home, before I understood what it was. It hasn't bloomed since. Will it ever bloom again? It does leaf out every year, just no big beautiful blooms.

    • @17m2garden
      @17m2garden  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So sorry to hear that! With proper maintenance it should re-bloom, pruning would only affect the current season's blooms. If it's grown in the ground make sure to give it a good dose of slow release fertilizer in the spring and then again in summer, and don't forget to water during dry spells. But if it doesn't bloom despite all your efforts it might be a good idea to replace it with a new, perhaps more reliable variety.

    Beautiful flowers you have!
    I am growing a few Hydrangeas in the Balcony for the first time this year. I am worried about how to keep them during the winter. Do I water them at all during the winter? My winter gets freezing cold (USDA zone 7) so I'm afraid watering the pot during the winter might freeze the roots and kill them. At the same time, I don't want to dry them to death if that's what's going to happen if I stopped watering the entire winter. Please help!!

    • @17m2garden
      @17m2garden  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Water them occasionally throughout the fall until the first frost. If your balcony is not covered and they get some rain or melting snow during the winter, this may be just enough moisture. But I recommend checking on them once every two weeks or so, and if you notice that the soil is very dry, it is worth giving them a splash of water (when the temperatures are above freezing). I also recommend wrapping the pots in bubble wrap to prevent the soil in the pot from freezing (you can check out my video on how to overwinter potted plants for more tips). Hope this helps, good luck!

    • @MrWhitney4e
      @MrWhitney4e 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@17m2garden Thank you!
      My balcony is open but the balcony of my neighbor above me is keeping the rain and snow from reaching my plants. Imagine your balcony but with the roof over it.
      So only water when the temperature is above freezing. When the temperature is below freezing (most of the time my winter will be below freezing at least during January and February), should I leave the plant alone even if they are frozen dry? I guess there's no point in adding water to the frozen potting mix.

      Hi! Thank you, I'm happy that you found this video helpful!
      Alga Bloom is a fertilizer that promotes flowering. Start using it once you notice those first flower buds. It will promote more blooms on ornamental plants or more fruit and veggies on your edible plants 🌸🍅🥒 Continue to use it weekly until your plant is done blooming (or done producing fruit/veg if you're gonna use it in your veggie garden too)
      Green Sensation is an additional booster, mix a tiny bit of it with Alga Bloom once your plant has some first flowers.
      I use these fertilizers weekly.

    Hydrangeas are one of my very favorite plants. I remember playing in my grandmother’s yard where there were many mop head hydrangeas. About once a week I would cut some blooms, poke holes in a paper plate and make a hat, held on my head by a long ribbon across it.
    I am now 70 and am having a real problem with any yard work where I have to lean over or squat down, and my back is protesting any time I try to dig a hole in the ground.
    I haven’t ever tried container gardening, but after watching this video, I am sure this will be manageable and rewarding.

    perfect youtube channel for me, lol. I live in France now, and we have a pretty long balcony, not too wide, but really long, south facing with little to no obstruction from other buildings, and it gets full sun from about 12pm to 6/7pm, like full sun. I tried growing begonias and dahlias, and I did get some blooms earlier in the summer, but they didn't tolerate the canicule/heatwave we had this summer, so while dahlias are my favorite flower, I'm trying to think of more hardy heat loving plants, and I was wondering about hydrangea, and since you're based in France and do balcony growing, I'm hoping I can learn some things here.

      @17m2garden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am happy to hear that you found my channel helpful 🥰 Although my balcony is the opposite of yours - I only get a few hours of morning sunlight. This summer was tough, wasn't it? Even in the shade it was hard to keep plants happy... Oakleaf Hydrangeas (quercifolia) or panicle Hydrangeas (paniculata) can be grown in a full sun spot but you will have to water them a lot. But there are plenty of beautiful drought tolerant flowers in the alpines/rock garden category. Roses also love sunny spots and do well in pots 🌹

    • @17m2garden
      @17m2garden  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! A few dead buds are usually nothing to worry about, it could just be the result of cold snaps in the spring, so just cut them off. But if the new flowers turn brown and the leaves also dry out, it probably means you're underwatering the plant. Also, don't forget that Hydrangea 'Endless Summer' is H. macrophylla, so be careful not to prune it at the wrong time of year.

Is there any hope for it to bloom on the new growth , next year ? Or have I ruined it ? We live in a high altitude climate with cold winters , so I kept it in the garage all winter .

      Hi! I'm assuming you are talking about Hydrangea macrophylla? Yeah it blooms on the branches from the previous year, so if you cut those back this spring, the plant will most likely not bloom this summer. Maybe a few lonely flowers will appear if you missed some stems. But don't worry! This summer the branches will grow back and on these branches it will bloom for you next year. Just don't prune it anymore 😉

      @17m2garden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The climate does not matter much when it comes to pruning, but if the winters are very warm, it can affect the formation of flower buds, cause the plant grows better when it has a cold dormancy period over winter. Hydrangea macrophylla doesn't require pruning. You can trim it lightly if you want, but do it immediately after they are done blooming.

    Full of great information. In this video you say you fertilize every week and as soon as it starts to bloom. When do you STOP giving it fertilizer?

    • @17m2garden
      @17m2garden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for your feedback, I'm very happy that you liked the video.
      That's a great question! If you are using liquid feed, you can stop fertilizing once the plant stops producing new flower heads and the old ones start to fade and wither.

    Can i grow them in railing planters on my deck?

    • @17m2garden
      @17m2garden  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! I've seen small Hydrangeas planted in window boxes etc in seasonal compositions, so if you have small enough plants and large enough pots, you can definitely give it a try! But if you're thinking of growing them for more than one season, you'll need to repot them to larger pots after a year or two, cause railing pots will quickly become too small and shallow for them.

    @Treeofwysdm ปีที่แล้ว

    Your babies are all so healthy and happy looking! 😊 One question: for the potted hydrangeas, do you leave the soil alone each spring or do you change it out or alter it in any way?

    • @17m2garden
      @17m2garden  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi! Thanks so much! I repot them every 2-3 years, but every spring I scrape the top layer of soil and refresh it with: either acidic compost or ericaceous potting soil and a few handfuls of worm castings ☺️

    Hello, can I grow hydrangea macrophylla in Greece? Or is the weather prohibiting?☺️

    • @17m2garden
      @17m2garden  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Search in Google "Greece hardiness zones" and check on the map what growing zone you live in. If you live in zone 8 no problem at all 👌 If you are in zone 9 search then for "Hydrangeas for zone 9" there are a few beautiful ones to choose from! But above zone 9 winters are too warm for them to go dormant.

    bonjour je voudrais surtout savoir comment les arroser (mophead bleu/violet intense pour une, l'autre je sais pas mais elle est bleu clair et toute fine et petite, cest celle la qui me pose le plus problème) surtout maintenant pendant un avril qui n'est pas tres chaud, depuis que je les ai achetées je les ai arrosées tous les jours mais j'arrive pas a savoir si elles ont soif ou trop d'eau... j'ai changé les pots il y a 3 jours pour des biens plus gros car elles avaient trop de racines, j'ai coupé les parties mortes, j'ai fait un "gros arrosage" en submergeant le pot quelques secondes dans un bac à eau tiède avec la nouvelle terre, le lendemain je les ai arrosées un peu mais toujours l'air bof... le jour d'apres elles ont l'air pire, je ne les ai pas encore arrosées aujourdhui j'attends ce soir, je sais pas quoi faire 😅 le jour avant de changer le pot jai submergé les têtes dans de l'eau chaude car j'ai vu des tutos ou si on les laissait comme ça pendant 30 min à 2h elles reprennaient forme (jai laissé 30 min par peur de faire n'importe quoi, elles avaient l'air si tristes, trop mouillées, trop lourdes... jai eu trop peur, j'ai seché un peu avec un linge et deux des bouboules ne tennaient plus debout...) je crois que je les ai trop arrosées, mais si j'arrete de les arroser un jour ou deux on dirait qu'elles en souffrent aussi, j'ai jamais eu des fleurs aussi incomprehensibles/dramatiques 😅😅😅

      Je peux comprendre votre confusion, les hortensias sont très exigeants, ce ne sont pas des plantes adaptées aux débutants. D'après ce que vous avez dit, je dirais que vous arrosez trop votre plante, faites attention car la plante pourrira bientôt si vous continuez à l'immerger! Arrosez-la bien jusqu'à ce que l'eau sorte des trous de drainage, mais attendez ensuite que la couche supérieure du sol sèche avant d'arroser à nouveau (enfoncez votre doigt dans le sol, s'il semble humide, n'arrosez pas). En été, vous devrez arroser quotidiennement, mais pour l'instant, j'arrose les miennes seulement une ou deux fois par semaine.
