Very satisfying to take care of a spot where your plants aren't thriving. I'm so thankful not to have the soil issue that you're combatting, but then I can't dig a hole in the clay without being on my hands and knees using the claw side of a hammer. Always trade offs :) And how I love hydrangeas. I have so many in my zone 7B gardens, maybe 50, and they never ever disappoint! Keep the hydrangeas coming!!! Love that particular garden of your property.

I chuckled when Laura said not everything works out. Started out 6 years ago with clay flower beds. It took 2 years before I read how to remedy the problem. This is the 3rd different bed of grasses and flowers I'm trying out. I hope to find right combo of soil and plants in another 2 or 3 tries. If not, back to Hostas. :)

Thank you for showing us realistic gardening! In the world of social media we are always shown what works, what’s perfect. So it’s nice to see that even the best gardeners have plants that don’t thrive. That really shows us what the mindset of any gardener (and really anybody) should be. If something doesn’t work, figure out why and what could be done differently and try again. Your videos are always refreshing and encouraging!

Every time I hear you speak of your high pH soil I remember a 'lecture' I attending regarding adding lime to your soil, which allows the plant to better absorb the nutrients already in the soil. The speaker was Ted Stephens of Nurseries Caroliniana (North Augusta, SC). At first I thought a lecture on Lime - UGH - how boring is this gonna be - but it was one of the best I have ever attended - learned a great deal. You may want to reach out to him for some info regarding this matter. I'm certainly no expert but I always like to pass along info or experiences I have encountered along my gardening journey - just as y'all have done thru your videos. I'm excited for this new variety of hydrangea - we, here in the South, just adore our hydrangeas - wouldn't be a southern garden without them !!! Looking forward to seeing this new hedge in all its glory.

Wow…..Little Lime Punch!!!!!! I cannot wait to be able to plant one of these in my garden next year. High pH definitely makes iron unavailable to the roots of hydrangeas….that’s why hydrangeas prefer a slightly acidic soil so that they could absorb Fe (iron). Chelated iron and Iron tone are soluble in water so continuous applications is necessary. Hopefully these new LL Punch hydrangeas will be able to thrive there….would love to see how they bloom and their colour change. 🪴💚🙏

    • @Bamboo4U2
      @Bamboo4U2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Meh. I think that whole aversion (in many cases, not all) is some throwback to the Victorian era when women were shamed for embracing anything red. "The Scarlet Letter," Alice in Wonderland," the prohibition against (a woman) wearing red at a wedding/funeral. It's probably all rooted in shaming menstruation.
Or maybe she just doesn't like the color...but only on flower blooms? It's an odd, so specific aversion she has. She'll plant red Japanese maples, coleus, caladiums and grow red amyrillis and display red poinsettias...
I don't get it. I don't think she does either. It was probably drilled into her as a kid and she never really questioned it.

This may not be a feasible option, but I’ve seen fertilizer injectors that attach to your watering system. You can use water soluble fertilizers in them. I wasn’t sure if this could be an option for the iron or maybe any other fertilizers you use. This would save you a lot of time since you already have a drip system.

Coffee grounds are very acidic. Pour used grounds about 10 inches away from the stems around each plant. Keep on doing this and I guarantee the chlorosis problem will be fixed in a year, for the hydrangeas at least. We make 2-3 pots of coffee per day. That’s alot of free soil acidifier. As it rots into the ground, it will lower the ph.

Love watching what you do. I am no expert. I no longer have a garden but plante in containers on my balcony. Most of the plants in them have bean there for many years. I fead them regularily but think they are now pot bound. They are nearly inpossible to get out of the pot because of an overlapping rim. My plan is to try to saw the sides of the plants to remove them. Then remove most of the soil and replant them. Half of the containers were filled with lava gravel. Should I do this again

Could you amend the soil in that area or even dig some dirt out and plant in fresh potting mix?

Hello! Thanks for this video! Have you ever planted a hydrangea on a slope? Will it grow upwards, upright, after compensating for the slope? Or is it going to droop over down the incline and tip over if I don't assist it and growing upwards? It's not a huge incline. Maybe 35°

I live in zone 9a and avoid planting this time of year due to the heat. How do you keep new plants alive in your summer heat?

As much as I pay for proven winner plants, those half dead hydrangeas would’ve went into a planter to try to save. Reminder: She has a small child and a new baby and this huge Reno project. I’m sure she’s probably thinking, “Who has time to rescue these dying plants when I need a rescue myself! :) Nice new hedge. Looking forward to the maturing.

Laura, so you moved your hosta. This has got me thinking about my Hosta that has exploded this season. Is it possible to divide my overgrown hosta that is growing into my lilac shrub or is it best to relocate the whole plant? Thanks for this very timely video.

Hostas actually need to be divided periodically.

Good morning! I love your channel, you do such an amazing job and have helped my garden immensely, thank you! I was wondering what product you are using to provide the immediate dose of iron to the plant. I am dealing with a nutrient deficiency with my hydrangeas and I have IronTone and soil acidifier but a couple of my newly planted hydrangeas could use some immediate help as well. Thank you!!

Are you going to try save some of the hydrangeas you took out of the ground? Or are they beyond saving?

How do you get them planted so close to the tree? I could barely dig deep enough to put coleus in the ground around a tree.
They are gonna be so pretty in that row!!! Can't wait to see them bloom !!

I planted a hydrangea last spring. It's doing quite well. I protected it from freezing and babied it.
I planted a P.W. hydrangea this late spring and it's turning brown and yellow. They are 8 feet apart with a rose of Sharon in between. Speaking of r.o.s. l planted 6 and 3 took.....
I also planted a purple salvia. It was okay, now it's getting wierd...🤔
    Very strange.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Supertunia’s, especially the Vistas! I live in New Orleans, LA(zone 9). Can I plant them at the end of the summer/beginning of Fall for the Fall season? Do you think they would thrive or even just do ok? I’m thinking of planting PW 4 inch pots in my garden around Sept and have them go through the fall until December ish. Do you think I can do this in the fall and have it actually work? I don’t know much about Supertunia’s. I’ve only used them in the spring/summer time. Also, will PW even have them for sale around the fall time?

How long does it take for the chlorosis to show up? We were told 4 years ago our ruby slipper maple is at risk of it but it has held on to the beautiful green.
    Back to my coffee.
