  • One of the main questions I get on my channel is how the Panasonic Lumix G85 compares to the Panasonic Lumix GX85. In this video, I highlight 15 reasons why the Panasonic Lumix G85 is better than the Panasonic GX85. However, things aren't always what they seem on paper...
    Which camera do you like better and why? ‪@OpenFilmmaker‬

    Appreciate the comparison. Was about to go with the G85, then saw the surprise ending about using the GX85. It's a hard call.

      G85 for video. GX85 for travel (it's smaller). Or get them both. They make great primary and secondary cameras.

    Another option is to get both...and you'll still be paying less than you would for any other brand; The #1 thing I always tell people is "Always shoot with 2 cameras" because it makes it A LOT easier for editing😃

    • @OpenFilmmaker
      @OpenFilmmaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree with that! These cameras are cheap! Also two angles helps so much in editing and reduces the need to change setups during the shoot. What are your favorite lenses?

      @@OpenFilmmaker I love your "take" on this point about always shooting with 2 cameras, and I really like both of these, as they make up the heart of my budget filmmaking kit😃 In regard to lenses, I've tested quite a few (and the results are on my website, with LUTs for each, and more coming) but for my favorites, I made what I call 3 "Kit Levels" which are "Minimal" (a GoPro on the hotshot of a G85, with a Viltrox Speedbooster (NF-M43x, Nikon version) plus a Nikon 50mm) the "Basic Kit" (which adds a 2nd camera, the GX85 with just a kit wide angle lense, preferably the 12-60 from the G85) and last my "Advanced Kit" (which adds a 3rd camera for telephoto shots, the FZ1000 or FZ2500). I also use vintage 70-300 tele. kit lenses, from the 90s, on the G85 quite a bit😃😃😃

      @@OpenFilmmaker Wow! I had just subscribed to your TH-cam channel last week!😃 It's so neat to find someone who thinks the same about some of these things😃 For my (in-studio) TH-cam workflow, I'd been experimenting with using an HDMI swticher with an Atomos recorder (actually an old $200 Ninja 2) which works pretty well (if you don't mind syncing your audio to multiple clips) or now I'm testing a Blackmagic ATEM Mini, going into a similar HDMI recorder (I have 3 cameras + 1 computer screen coming IN, and 1 ProRes file being captured on the way OUT😃

    Great video. May I ask your opinion on the difference between 16mp and 20mp sensors, in terms of dynamic range, sharpness and overall image quality. I am stuck between gx85 and gx9, the latest being $200 more expensive. I am looking for a small camera for travel so size does matter. Thanks!

    • @OpenFilmmaker
      @OpenFilmmaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ok so with the GX9 you also have to remember the 4K crop is more than the GX85. Otherwise the GX9 is better. The 20MP will give you slightly better pictures and you can print bigger sizes. So if that's important then def the GX9. Otherwise the GX85 is the best value around.

      @OpenFilmmaker  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Invintius For photography the A6400 larger sensor and 24MP will give you more flexibility in editing. However when it comes to video, I'd compare the bitrates. The G85 and A6400 have 100 Mbps but I prefer the quality of the G85. The biggest deciding factor between these cameras comes down to the quick video AF of the A6400 vs the bad video AF of the G85. Also look into the cost of lenses in each system. Either camera can take good pics. My recommendation is based on quality and value.

    I have a question. I've already have a Gopro 9 but i'm looking for a camera that performance better in low light conditions like interior, wedding and parties.
    The g85 does serve to that purpose?
    Thak you very much for your answer

    • @OpenFilmmaker
      @OpenFilmmaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The M43 sensor is bigger than the GP9 sensor... bigger sensor = better at low-light... so the G85 would be better in low-light compared to GP9. However, while the G85 is better than the Go Pro 9, there are other cameras (like full-frame sensor cameras) that are better than G85/M43. Also don't forget the low aperture (low f/ ) lenses. I used a GX85 with 25mm f/1.4 at a wedding for photography and it turned out great. If you have access to a full-frame camera with a good low-light lens that would be the first choice. So it depends on you. I'd try the G85 in the conditions you mentioned and see how it does. Get the 25mm f/1.4 and give it a shot!

    i miss my g85, i love my g9 and gm5 but really the g85 is closer to my heart, i started with and the form factor was perfect for my hand, now the g9 is so big that i get lazy and fear holding it on everyday use, i tried the gx85 and i like it i was gonna buy it instead of gm5 but the gm5 is the smallest of all and the price was only a 100 euros with 12-32 mm kit... now i really think of selling the g9 even tho the g9 makes me more confident xd with low light VFR SLOWMO and 4k60 and 10 bit and better colors and ibis ....

      @@OpenFilmmaker Would you say this is the best for under $500? And would you say this is better than a pixel 5 for video? People always say use ur smartphone but mine is straight booty. Also I've seen people compare this to the cannon M50. Would you say it's better?

    • @OpenFilmmaker
      @OpenFilmmaker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on your needs... M50 has a larger sensor and will do better with noise, especially in low-light. GX85 is a portability-first type of camera. The 4k is amazing and the crop is only 10% unlike the 20% crop on the GX9. It's my most used camera, but I also work around the limitations. If you want to do minimal work tinkering on the camera, get the M50 II. It has much better AF, esp in 1080p. Also M50 has a mic input too! If you want a small, portable camera, get the GX. Panasonic is not known for their video AF. They're consumer cinema-like cameras with features like focus pulling and in-camera crop zooming/sliding. Hope that helps!

      G100 is 20MP and GX85 is 16MP. I'd think the G100 may have a slight advantage. However GX85 has built-in sensor stabilization. G100 does not. So GX85 has a slight advantage at reducing motion blur in photos.

    The G85 makes a great A cam, with the GX85 as a B cam. Both offer unlimited video recording. The G85 will do this with mp4 or avchd, but unfortunately the GX85 only does unlimited with avchd.
