@@joliebenedict It's an easy carry and that means I have it with me more often than when I had the Nikon DSLR. The controls are easy to use. I have often used my DSLR in Aperture priority mode and shifting to the Lumix hasn't really been a challenge for me. I am travelling to Germany in a week's time, visiting my cousins and hope to use this extensively. I am sure you will have fun with this.
I got the GX85 in my hands yesterday, and have been struggling to sort out how to navigate the controls. This tutorial video is an absolute lifesaver. Wonderful clear explanations, and I learned a lot.Thank you so very much for making it.
I’ve had everything from Pentax to Leica, etc and just got this camera recently out of curiosity for the M43 format. I have to say, even in 2024 this camera is an incredible value. The features that come in it is everything someone could want and no extra nonsense that you wouldn’t want. Only thing I’m finding weird is the lens release button since I’m used to it on the other side of the lens mount. Will just take some time to figure out I guess. Beginning photographer or a seasoned pro, this camera is truly something unique and fun. I put the lumix 20mm f1.7 ll lens on it and talk about a serious package you want to take everywhere with you.
Just got this for a beginners photography class, and the professor hasn’t been much help with the basics. Can’t thank you enough for the help and thoroughness!
This is by far the best and most helpful tutorial that I’ve seen on this camera. Very detailed, thank you for taking the time to film this. Excellent!!
My camera is arriving tomorrow. Thank you so much for this video! Every other one seems to be comparing this camera to other cameras and their features. Not helpful if you’ve already decided. Knowing what each button does is priceless!
This is a GREAT video. Thank you. I just got this camera today. I was looking for a detailed tutorial and most the videos are just garbage. This one rocks! You go girl!
Nice video, Thanks! Just to clarify: Aperture priority means you set the aperture and the camera sets the rest; Shutter priority means you set shutter speed and the camera sets the rest. My dad had a Pentax from the early 70s that had S and A done entirely through analog circuitry. I, for one, like RAW - I can change colors at home. Once again, excellent beginners video! Thank you! Oh ... another secret most Lumix cameras have: if you look closely, you'll find a rubbery thing on the battery lid. That rubber thingy can be removed and a DC external power bank can be used with a special (available at around US$10) adapter.
In case no one else told you, the "No Lens" option doesn't literally mean what it says. It's for when you put on a lens that can't talk to the camera. Like another manufacturer's lens, a third-party lens, a manual focus lens of some sort. The probably didn't have enough room to put up a full explanation. But, yeah, their wording is confusing, but what else could they have said that would fit the space?
Yes, it was one of those "I know in the back of my head what this means" but sometimes it doesn't click when I am doing these walkthroughs. Thank you for clearing it up for those who I did not clarify for! :)
Late to party on this video. I've been looking at this camera...... the best step by step video on this camera I've seen. You thru me over the top !! Thanks !!
4:3 uses the whole sensor - other proportions use less area. Use 4:3 and cut it later. Multi exposure is very useful - it takes 3 photos being one at the set exposure and two others below and above that point (how much above/bellow can be set by the user)
An excellent video, very clearly explaing all the buttons and features. However just one minor point. I would prefer not to have any background music as I find it very distracting when I'm listening to the commentary.
Thanks, I learned a lot. I'm sure someone has mentioned it already, but "shoot without a lens" is for manual lenses that do not connect with your camera electrically. I have the 7 Artisans fish eye on my camera now. When that is set up, it will ask you if you want to continue shooting with the 8 mm setting when you turn the camera on.
VERY GREAT VIDEO WAS VERY HELPFUL I JUST PURCHASED A G85 and was so lost all the other videos i watched were garbage. THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS VIDEO. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK
'Shoot without lens' is mainly used when you're using something like a vintage lens on an adapter. Old lenses don't have the electronic contacts to tell the camera that you've connected a lens, so the camera thinks that you don't have one attached.
I have come across this in using Nikon film camera lenses on new digital bodies, it didn't click when it came to doing this walkthrough! Thank you for clarifying!
Thanks for this! I have both the GX85 and G85 so very relevant for me. I learned a few things from your video and will keep this saved in my TH-cam library for periodic review. Very helpful.
Very helpful, thanks! With this camera getting a little older, I was able to grab a used one with both stock lenses for a very nice price. It had all the features I wanted for a camera I can use when I don't want to carry around a big SLR, but want something more than my phone: interchangeable lenses, decent sensor size, tilting LCD, viewfinder, built in flash (with option to add an external one), and manual controls. I can't wait to play around with it!
I just got this camera. It's going on vacation instead of my almost 20 year old Canon Digital Rebel XT. The Rebel XT still works fantastically but it's too big to carry on cruises and shore excursions. Awesome video. I'll definitely be referencing this a lot as I learn the camera.
Thanks for the great video! I bought the g85 . The past panasoniic camera i bought z model with 18x optical and digital zoom also. This camera is a different beast.! I see it has great potential which is going to take me awhile to learn. Once again thank you.
Just bought the Gx85 but have not had a chance to try it out yet. Hoping it will do well for my wife's hobby of taking photos of hawks and owls in our neighborhood. She been using cell phone so far. Your review is great! Thanks.
Rather late to this party, but did want to let you know that I found your video very informative. We did not agree on all settings, but most actually; we just had a few differences on personal preferences. Now that I have a baseline for settings on the GX85, I'll compare to baseline settings for two other older Panny cameras that I have: a GM5 and a G6. Thank you for making this helpful video.
That is the great thing about photography, everything is up to the preference of the photographer! There is no one correct way to set the camera or capture an image, it is a great art. So glad you found my video helpful!
I know this vid is a few years old but I got this camera a few days ago as a beginner for a decent price. This was extremely helpful!!! At 29:14 I turned "Constant Preview" ON. Any downside to using live/constant preview? I find it very useful for a beginner photographer like me to make sure my shot looks the way i want it to, especially in Manual/Priority modes. Really helped me put all the exposure triangle knowledge into practice & get used to it better/learn it.
this video is awesome, just had a question, what would be the best settings for this camera to use in studio with lighting and white background for product photography? Thanks!
shoot w/o lens is useful if you are using an old school slr lens that does not have auto functions. selecting quiet mode will turn off the mechanical shutter selecting 4K mode will also disable mechanical shutter if mechanical shutter mode is off then the flash will not work. just a few gotchas that I have learned the hard way.
The peak detection is useful but I can't use it properly yet. It detects areas that have the lighting level above the sensor's max - and has some way to show which areas are under that situation by painting a zebra pattern.
Omg I'm so overwhelmed by this new camera! But I'm so thankful for this video! I bought it to shoot my son's sports do you have any certain ways you'd set it up for that ? Thank you so much for making this video
you can't charge the gx85 while its running. it gives you a message to turn it off before it starts charging. But you can buy a battery adapter that puts a cable out of the compartment and use it that way. There's even a hole built in for the cord to go through. You can also set your sleep timer for 2 mins and after 2 minutes of not using it, youll start charging right away.
Yes! I did notice the charging while running after I posted the video, and put a correction in the description. It really could be fixed with a firmware upgrade and I have let my Panasonic rep know so hopefully in future cameras it will be a feature. Your ideas of the battery with the ac cord and also using the sleep timer are great as well until they do make this an option! Thank you for commenting!
Thank you for the kind comment, I am glad my videos can help you! When it comes to moon photography, you need a good zoom, something that provides between 200-600mm range. (On this camera, you will want the lens to range between 100 and 300, because the sensor will allow you to capture 2x the distance!) You will also want to use your P mode, set your metering to center (if you want the moon in the center of your photos, or spot if you want it off to the side of the frame), and focusing may be set to AFS or if it’s easier you can use manual focus as well by switching it to MF. These tips should definitely help you get a great moon shot!
@@Shutterbug101 Thanks for your prompt and detailed instructions. I forgot to mention that we also bought this long len at 45-150 (0.9m/3.0 ft). for capturing distant photography. Shall I follow the same directives using this long len? Thank you!
Thank you!! This was so helpful! I just have a question. How can I get that blurry background? I tried many times but could not adjust the camera to blur the background.
Great question! To achieve a nice blurry background with the kit lens can actually be pretty tricky. You really want to invest in a lens that has an aperture, or F number, 2.8 or lower. This stands for the physical opening in the lens that controls light intake and either a blurry background or sharpness throughout the image. The lower that number is, the blurrier the background is. If you go into the menu into your custom settings, and find sleep mode, you may be able to turn it off. Let me know if you are unable to find it and I can give you step by step instructions. The angle your asking for for that sensor size would be either the Panasonic or Olympus 7-14mm lens. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Yes you can change the lens on this camera. If you want a 600mm equivalent, just look for an Olympus or Panasonic lens that goes to 300mm (as with the sensor size, it will double the reach of the lens)

Yes this is a possibility. I would go into the menu, go to the wrench symbol and reset your settings. This should reset the camera to out of the box settings.
Awesome video, I just thought there was some good irony when you said today’s cameras have good auto WB and as you said that your filming camera completely changed the white balance of this constant shot. Haha
Omg your right, it made it just a bit cooler lol! The metering and white balance can be tricky when your working with a black camera and white background, working on getting a grey background for those reasons, but kudos for catching that! Lol
Very helpful! THanks so much. What are your thoughts on having this as an A camera and the G7 as the B. I'm considering getting the G7 just because the G85 doesn't have mic port. Thoughts?
I don’t see why not! This camera has great video capabilities, but if you want the option for an external mic for more directional sound recording, I would get the G85 instead of the GX85.
@@Shutterbug101 thank you for your quick answer ! So the best thing is to select Raw+jpg in high quality ? And if I transfer a pic in my phone the quality would be better than if I would have taken the pic with my phone ? I mean there is an interest to do that ? Thank you
Yes I would say set to raw and jpeg in the largest quality. The sensor of the camera alone is much larger than the cell phones so it already gives you more options, so yes the quality in camera will capture better than the phone in the end.
@@Shutterbug101 Sorry ^^, I meant if I transfer the pics from my camera to my phone, when I will see them on the screen of my phone there will be a big difference than if I had taken the same with my phone ?
You can see some differences like low light images or depth of field shots with a good lens, but quality can look similar first look on a 3 inch screen. When you zoom into each is where you will see the biggest differences in resolution.

Very helpful! THanks so much. What are your thoughts on having this as an A camera and the G7 as the B. I'm considering getting the G7 just because the G85 doesn't have mic port. Thoughts?
The G7's video is probably the worst out of the line so personally I would move up to the G85 or G95 for the mic option! I hope this helps!

Thank you so much for this! Is it a good camera to record dance videos ?
I don’t see why not! This camera has great video capabilities, but if you want the option for an external mic for more directional sound recording, I would get the G85 instead of the GX85.
@@Shutterbug101 oh wow that's great thank you soo much I was worried coz i already got the gx85 😂😅
Shoot w/o lens: shut off when you attach lens adaptor for use of other lenses, e.g. Nikon
Yes! Thank you for clarifying! I knew that in the back of my head but didnt hit me until after I posted. Thank you!
Hi thanks for the review. If I put just "raw" not without jpg can I send my pics on my phone with the wifi ?
WiFi won’t transfer Raw files, only jpeg
This a bridge camara. Quite good
