    When water and ethanol are added the resulting volume is less than the sum of the two volumes because of a change in the hydrogen bonding. So using graduated cylinders to measure the volume of ethanol extracted will show less than the actual amount.

    what if you used the water to take out the ethanol then used a Mr Funnel that separates water from fuel? Would the ethanol stay with the water and the ethanol free gas pass throug the filter? If so that would be a great way to separate the ethanol free gas from the ethanol and water without siphoning off fuel etc. Please advise

    Hi Keven, believe that the 12% ethanol you reported is likely to be 10% ethanol and an additional 2% water contamination. Therefore, your fuel sample already had water in it. Ethanol ships by rail and has a water content of about .32% and thru transfers and underground storage, it’s easy to see it climbing to 2% water contamination at the fuel pump.

    • @boots7859
      @boots7859 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point. However, wouldn't he have seen that 2% on the bottom of the cylinder?

    • @KevinBaxter
      @KevinBaxter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mike is referring to the fact that its possible 2% of that water could have been held in suspension in the fuel by the ethanol...by adding additional water, it was enough to pull the 2% suspended content from the emulsion. In either case...it further demonstrates the point. It's possible fuel can be contaminated by water held in suspension by ethanol which of course, is an issue in itself. As long as the water absorbed by the ethanol doesnt exceed its ability to remain in suspension, you cant tell it's contaminated. Only at which time the water content exceeds that ability, does it separate...which doesnt take much.

My question is after the ethanol and non ethanol gas is fully separated could I slowly pour the gas into a mr funnel because they take the water out of the fuel and they do work because I tried putting water in them and nothing came out. Or will that just mix the ethanol with the gas again??

I am aware that the gas stations are getting mixed gas in my area, it been a problem here in Australia, the last pump, the tank was nearly full and I couldn't work out why, now I know. my problem is I don't get the opportunity to ride it as often as needed , thank you for explaining it clearly.

    I have done the same thing when ethanol-free fuel wasn't available, but due to the cloudy water layer after settling I'm pretty sure you're losing some water-soluble additives as well as the ethanol. Best to start with the highest octane available ! FWIW avgas (LL100) runs terrible in my small gasoline engines, plus it's a lot more expensive. Get E-zero if at all possible !

    I had a 96 Ducati 900ss with the sight glass for a dip stick, you look through and see your oil level in the middle, it was all foggy, like moisture and wouldnt go away even after riding around 200 miles. I think it was two pieces of glass and .moisture stuck in between but i really dont know, Long story short, i rode around Lake Superior over 2000 miles and the sight glass was crystal clear. Im assuming your gas tank is a similar type thing, get out on the highway and run a few tanks right through it, maybe one road trip a year at least. Good video

      yes. condensation will build in a crankcase. thats why engines should only be started if the intent is to run them to operating temp over time to evaporate all the moisture.

      @@KevinBaxter oh ok thanks, yeah here in LI newYork there’s no ethanol free fuel so making your own is the only cheap solution. But only really need it for small engines ( lawn mowers, weed wicker’s,etc..). So if due to the lose of octane from this process and adding some octane booster only effects the spark plug I’d rather have to change a spark plug then an ethanol’d up carburetor. 🙂

    Ok. Now that we've lowered the octane rating by removing the ethanol, what are your thoughts on octane boosters??

    • @KevinBaxter
      @KevinBaxter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Great question. I only use octane boosters when necessary....when you have detonation issues and have no other option (on a trip, forced to get very low octane fuel, etc). If the bike is tuned correctly, you shouldnt have any need for octane boosters. Fuel can vary state by state. Some 93 octanes may have much less ethanol in it....5 to 6%. Which means the octane wouldn't be reduced as much. Maybe to 90 give or take. The idea behind this...if you dont have access to ethanol free fuel, one can utilize this little trick for long term storage only. When it comes out of storage, go back to running 10% ethanol and you shouldn't need the octane boosters riding conservatively on one tank full of lower octane ethanol free. You could add a little just for that tank. 10% 87 octane in my area is $1.89 gal. 90 octane ethanol free is $3.05 gal. For my classic cars and bikes, i pay the extra and buy the ethanol free. For my mowers...since its such a small amount, i use the trick. The lower octane really doesnt matter in my mower.

    I run nonethanol fuel in my car even so I add some sea foam in the gas tank every so often. Keeps the injectors clean.

    The old saying if you have water in your tank add alcohol. Now you get it.

  • @jameslanning8405
    @jameslanning8405 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    After removing the ethanol, can't you just add some octane booster to the fuel?
    I see the alcohol and octane doing basically the same thing... Ethanol, as you say, contains water to some extent. (I've never hear they are adding 200 proof, (100%), pure alcohol to the fuel to start with.
    And the additives keep the ethanol suspended... "With whatever water is in it."
    And, as you know, water vapor, in the fuel or injected in the cylinder, will have the same basic effect... It will slow the fuel burn down... Which is what Octane does...
    Removing all the ethanol, or getting fuel that never had it, can only improve the quality of the fuel, (make it more explosive). Then Octane can stabilize the fuel burn, without the worry of water in a fuel system...

      booster seems to leave considerable deposits on plugs and o2 sensors. havent seen any that didnt anyway, that's commercially available.

    • @jameslanning8405

      @@KevinBaxter I can't offer any advice on that. Because I've never used booster...
      I know it's there... Like rotgut liquor. But I'd rather pass it for something smoother...

    Water + ethanol + gasoline have different densities when mixed so using volume may be miskeading. Weighing fractions is better way

  • @omnivore2220
    @omnivore2220 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Without alcohol to keep the water condensation dissolved in the fuel, wouldn't it be worse? For surely any little bit of water in the tank would end up at the bottom right away instead of being suspended in solution. Aren't we really just talking about how much water can be held in solution before separation occurs? Furthermore, the product, Heet, consists of alcohol, for dissolving separated water into solution. And so that remedy, involving adding more alcohol, presumably is the answer to water in the fuel system caused, so you say, but having alcohol in the fuel to begin with. We appear to have a problem understanding something here.

    If you have fuel that sits and absorbs water, just add more ethanol to absorb the extra moisture.

  • @GUEST-qw4te

    You should try water, then gas line antifreeze. In theory, this should remove both the water and ethanol.

  • @fixento

    Better yet go to a gas station and buy ethanol free gas or add and ethanol neutralizer. Save the risk of handling gasoline and not getting all the water out of the fuel that will damage your fuel system.

  • @skydude426
    @skydude426 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually isn’t the ethanol content of the fuel you tested 15%? The original fuel was 80 mil. The 20 mils of water were added to pull the ethanol out of the 80 mil of fuel, so your not looking at 100 mil of fuel.
    12 mil of ethanol pulled out of 80 mil of fuel is 15% ethanol content.

    This is great but need a 100 gallons a day to keep things running. Where I live, we've had 15% for a year now. IT SUCKS! You may have beaten it to death > but what's being done to ELIMINATE IT from the American gas stations permanently? Things were just fine then they screwed it ONCE AGAIN for a scam on the people. AVGAS is great for Harleys. I've used it countless times. No ethanol, burns Super clean, and always power on demand at the throttle grip. Used it in all of my muscle cars and the dirt track car.

    How To Make Ethanol Free Gas????????

  • @dontupdateifitworks.424
    @dontupdateifitworks.424 ปีที่แล้ว

    😭🥺🤫😬 shhh ~ Don't use your hand without a glove use anything and then wash your hands! Otherwise was a fantastic idea but for a klutz clumsy as I am I don't do that cuz I might blow up the garage and have to go anywhere near the house even the dog will chase me off!
    I don't want to leave a link because then the government will blame me but there's a few places on the net that have buy it and do it yourself at home and if you don't tell him your name birthday social security number bank account shoe size and favorite color then two things you'll be reasonably safe from a hacker and you'll be reasonably safe from a hacker they got caught and was working for the government to find you because they want to keep the system just like it is except for!
    Number one is the gas stations that will pump non-ethanol gas without the moon shine in it to farmers because the humans on this planet still have to eat and the farmers sometimes are running farming implements that are over 100 years old You can't put that stuff in there unexpect the farmer to put up with it so you can get it if you don't live in a civilized city by taking a trip It's just a matter of money If you do the math If you drive 100 and 50 mi to get a couple cans of fuel and return it'll cost you more than the cans locally that contain 10 oz and $23 the arithmetic says $22.30 an ounce if you're just using it for a lawn mower or snowball maybe but then if you look at the research the fancy names for pure gas are not pure. Fuel and the other catch phrases me I am old and I still push my Sears and roebuck (RIP) 1992 MOWER AND I DID SEE THIS COMING POSSIBLY SO NOW THERE'S NO POSSIBILITY NO POSSIBILITY! 🤬☠️ AND BLAME ME BECAUSE I GATHERED UP SOME PARTS FOR MINE AND HOARDED THEM SO WHEN THEY MURDERED SEARS FOR THEIR NAME AND THEN WENT OFFSHORE TO MAKE COPIES OR CLONES CHOOSE THE WORD OF YOUR CHOICE AND NONE OF THAT FIT THE ORIGINAL SEARS AND ROEBUCK CRAFTSMAN EQUIPMENT AND REALLY YOU DON'T NEED THAT MUCH BUT WHEN THEY'RE OVER THERE OVER AND THE MACHINES ARE SELLING TODAY ARE OKAY TILL YOU GET THEM HOME AND THEN IF YOU DECIDE TO GO TO BED THE NIGHTMARES WILL BE THERE EVERY NIGHT THE OLD ONES WERE SIMPLE THEY USED TO HAVE GASOLINE YOU PUT THE GASOLINE IN THERE POOL A STRING OFF YOU GO BUT I CAN'T DO THAT WITH IT TOTAL SHOULDER REPLACEMENT TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT AND TOO MANY CANDLES ON TOO MANY CAKES SO I SWITCHED TO 100 LL AV GAS, WHEN I COULDN'T FIND $140 OR $190 BASED UP MAKING THAT AFTER THE WAR TO THE PUBLIC BUT IT'S GOT NOTHING IN IT BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE THE CONCEPT THEY CAN'T WRAP THEIR HEADS AROUND IT OF AIRPLANES FALLING OUT OF THE SKY BUT I DIGRESS AND PRETTY SOON DON'T MAKE ME LEGAL AND THEN YOU'LL HAVE SOLAR CELLS ON THE WINGS ELECTRIC MOTORS ON EVERY SURFACE OF THE AIRCRAFT AND YOU CAN ONLY FLY THEM IN PERFECT WEATHER CONDITIONS WHILE YOU WALK AROUND WITH AN ANKLE LENGTH RAINCOAT COVERED WITH SOLAR CELLS ON PROPELLER IN EACH HAND AND ONE ON YOUR HAT? 🇺🇸🥺
    I KNOW YOU'RE ONLY SUPPOSED TO MAKE COMMENT WITH THREE WORDS BUT FOR EVERYBODY ELSE JUST GO TO THE BOTTOM
