Hey, I'm Jenny Graham! I live in the small Highland city of Inverness.
Bikepacking has become so much more than riding my bike. It’s an identity, less about what I do and more about who I am.
Cycling has become imbedded into my personality - Och well, I've had worse habits!
After my Romanian Adventure (that I chat about in my film) I got wind of the Highland Trail 550 and, to be honest, life has never really been the same since. It became a frenzy of botching together whatever bikepacking kit I could find, beg or borrow and, taking of for the mountains on unchartered paths - sometimes with friends, sometimes alone but both equally as important to me. My thirst for adventure is only ever quenched for a short time. Before long, I find myself oooogling over maps, looking for the next journey, taking with me the memory’s, giggle and lessons from my previous path.
In April, I am taking on the challenge of completing the Arizona750 ; a 750mile endurance bike race. When I look through blogs and the info threads (and many other bike-packing events), it surprises me that there are a lack of women heading for the start line - how come? Do they not know about it? Not feel confident to do it? Or is it that they are just not that in to roughing it?! Personally, I don’t believe the latter for one second. More likely, in my opinion, to be a fear of not being good enough - That’s where I come in, because I know what it’s like to have the odds stacked against you but still push past the comfort zone- keep striving towards goals and dreams!
My own story, having my son as a teenager has shaped me in a way that i’ll be eternally grateful for. I benefitted from focus and purpose in my life, that I just didn’t find in other experiences. As Lachlan (my son) nears adulthood I have had the challenge of rediscovering myself and started searching to the new depths of my strength and personality, this is captured by everything in my bike adventures.
After all I’m just a regular rider. My times and goals in races are achievable to others. I’m not afraid of putting myself on that line or even not making it to the finish as it’s not really about the destination it’s about the journey you take to get there.
Bike-packing is such an empowering experience I wouldn’t miss it for the world and I want to share it with others - the opportunity to work with Blackburn, to get my adventures out there so that more women, men, girls and boys would be inspired. I am excited about that.
My work allows me to engage with a variety of people. From hard to reach young people that are out of mainstream education, to guiding middle-aged professionals from all over the world who are looking for the luxury Scottish adventure experience. I also work within the community engaging with woman on a cycle to Health programme. I am lucky to live in Scotland because it provides the perfect setting and outdoor learning experiences which allows me to engage
with these groups, build trust and take them to the edge of their comfort zones. Be empowered to be amazing!!
I think a BlackburnRanger needs to inspire, have respectful fear but be willing to push themselves to the boundaries of their adventure. To be socially-minded, exciting and adventurous. I think they need an awesome sense of humour with a humanitarian slant. And of course, be amazing at sharing these things. Eeeh-um, and snappy photo skills too! I think I am that person.
