Growing Pole Beans Easily in Small Spaces and Yeah... Up Poles! - TRG 2014

  • A lot of us tend to go for planting bush beans over pole beans. Bush beans can take up more space, produce less and sometimes have more problems. Pole beans are very easy to grow. 8 foot stakes from stores can be bought for about 2 bucks. This is one simple way I grow them. Very productive!

The native americans planted a stalk of corn, let it grow about five inches, then planted pole beans around it. That way you have your pole for the beans to grow up AND an ear of corn. Yay! Thanks for the video!!

We renovated our closet and I saw your timely video on how to make that trellis. I spray painted the wire shelves dark green and it worked well for the cucumbers. After, we planted yard-long beans and they are growing right up and over them. The bumble bees love the flowers. Thanks for that great time/money-saving and good gardening practice tips!

My folks always planted bush beans, talk about back breaking!! This is my first year at a new place and I have a much larger garden area than I have had in the past, so I ventured out trying many new plants and techniques. I decided to plant pole beans on a "trellis" made from cattle panels formed into a hoop/arch. They have been doing great! I can walk under the arch and pick the beans hanging down - VERY EASY! I also planted cucumbers on the other side of the arch and carrots, lettuce, and onions inside/under the arch. Tried small watermelon and muskmelon as well, but, they didn't climb as well as the pole beans and cucumber. Live and learn. :-)

Butternut squash didn't do well on the panel trellis, either. They climbed some, but the gourds were smaller than I would get by letting them trail. This year, I have 8 buttercup squash growing on 4 arched panels, and they are loving it - the panels may start getting crowded soon. Its too bad that your muskmelons didn't take to the trellis, but I have an idea for them - building a sort of stepped/shelf trellis that can support the weight of the fruit. If that works, we might be able to get butternut or some small watermelons to go vertical - wouldn't that be great? ! :)

Glad to see your beans growing. This year I had success on my pole and bush beans. Last year I tried to grow them too, but found that the beans kept rotting away. Turns out, the ground was too cold, and I was burying them too deep. This year I have and still am(latest harvest yesterday) harvesting from both varieties! I am learning so much about container gardening! Thanks! All this on a 4 by 12 ft covered porch in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

I so wish I had a yard! Really shows the difference between container gardening and in-ground/raised beds. I used the same technique but in a large container (as I only have a patio/porch but no yard) and despite using compost, organic fertilizer, worm castings, etc, my pole beans didn't do nearly as well, get as big, or produce as much. I have a feeling it has to do with how much the roots can spread out and the soil biology. Perhaps someday...

    • @JustTheilogs

It is funny how we use different terms here in the UK compared to America. WE call the bush variety Dwarf French Beans and the Pole Beans, Climbing French Beans. We call fava beans broad beans and lima beans butter beans. The structure you use to grow the beans with canes, here in the UK we call wigwam structure and you can buy attachment to the poles to attach the canes. Does this mean that your tomato growing season is coming to an end, as this seems a bit early. Generally when is your first frost date where you live, as one of my friend is predicting that some parts of America will have another severe winter.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

Antonio Pachowko In my area disease gets tomatoes by late August. I have some still going but the cold is coming in. September is the last round. I did however plant cold tolerent varieties in late july. Ill see how they do. We typically get frost October. But A cold front is rolling in from Canada.

I am trying pole beans for the first time this year. I started finding spotted leaves at the bottom of the plants. I removed them, and sprayed with a copper fungicide. Now the entire plant is starting to get spots and there are more yellow, spotted leaves each day. There are lots of flowers and I got my first bean today. What should I do about these spots and yellow leaves?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

Glad you are having fun! You have to keep the moist all the time. As if a container dries completely it really hurts the plant. 2 or 3 beans should be fine. If they are 10 feet plus maybe 2. I think it was just there for trellising. Usually I extend it up the pole. Could also just be a scrap I left at bottom. No real reason,.

Usually the wire goes up the pole for trellising but that could be a scrap I left there

I make a big dome of chicken wire and cover it. Rabbits eat them. For smaller insects dust them with insect dust of your choice.

How long can pole bean stay in produce?

  • @BL-rb7jm

I never use plastic buckets. As the plastic heats up in the Sun and leagues monel knock sense into your soil and the plants bring it up to the roots you're better off using galvanized metal anyting who cares stainless steel never plastic.
My father had six sections of land and unfortunately I live in apartment and I grow tomatoes pole beans in buckets on the balcony I don't like living in apartment but I have no other choice right now so I miss the land that we used to have. But as soon as I seen those plastic buckets I thought men something else to ruin our environment Atlee poisons into your soil. Other than that you got a nice Garden.

      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 ปีที่แล้ว

I am growing in cups and you can do that, just down let them go past 2 weeks in cups. If your are talking ground, probably, but you would have to dig really really wide root-ball. IF not the plant will be shocked. Best just dropping seed where you want them.

20 years ago yes. Not since then. Arsenic was banned decades ago. It is copper based treatment.
