Thanks for the review and vid on the action 4. Got my action 4 and am looking forward to shooting my MTB this up coming summer! Plus the skating wasn’t that bad🤘🏼🤘🏼🇨🇦🇨🇦. Have a rad day man, and great content.
This has got to be one of the best product ”testing” videos I’ve ever seen! Just amazing riding footage and the opening editing transitions are seamless. Sorry geeking out a bit. Awesome video!
Hadn’t seen your channel before. I am way past where I’d start mountain biking (I break too easily :-)), but I really enjoyed both the review and your riding. Subscribed.
Another feature that I really appreciated on the action 4 compared to the GoPro was that the wide angle distortion is minimized on the action 4. The perspectives of technical terrain is more real and life like on the action 4. On the GoPro, the distortion makes the terrain look weird, and not as big as it is in real life.
Great review! Think I’m going to pick one up, my primary use is dh MTB as well. Honestly think I preferred the video without the nd filters. Didn’t seem to lose much detail in high light and felt much clearer in low. 🤘🏼
Nice! Yeah...I also prefer the footy without the ND filter. It does sometimes blow out when going from dark to light, but I would trade that for the crisper image.
Yeah the magnet clip system has been super convenient probably the hallmark of the camera. I think for me even though the OA3 was not quite there on the image quality to my GP10, I have really appreciated not having the battery 40% and lower issues in the summer heat. Always good to have extra gear 😎
Thanks for the review Alan. I have a bunch of cameras I fart around with, including a GP11, Insta360 X3 and Go 3, and some older GPs. I don't wear full face because that's not the riding around where I am so I have a choice of chesty or visor mount - the latter only is really possible with the Go 3. Chesty is best but you gotta get that angle right. Visor mount cuts out the horizon which makes for bleh videos. The X3 on chest is great because you can change the FOV to get what you want but the image isn't as good as the GP11. I guess my point is, they all have trade-offs for any given usage. I find the hardest part of any camera though is actually getting out there and using it. The best camera you can get is the one that actually sees the trail.
Ha! Great point. For me, the one that actually sees the trail is the one that has the smallest impact on my stoke. If I gotta use an external mic or wear a camera bra or constantly fiddle with the camera, it's gonna see a lot of the inside of a drawer. That's why for me, it's a hard choice between the GoPro HERO11 and the DJI Action 4. Both are really easy to use on trail, and their strengths and weaknesses are so different. 😆
I've been a big fan of the hero 10. I hope the hero 12 doesnt aim to have an even wider fov. Gopro needs to work on the glitches their cameras can have when the battery is lower than about 30% battery. That's the main thing that has had me considering a dji. I still prefer the gopro footage though in this video. I feel like it's a bit hard to tell what's going on and it's bright but kind of...dark if that makes sense.
Fully agree. I know I always try to swap my GoPro battery when it gets closer to 40%. That being said, on the HERO11, I've been running the batteries down to more like 15% and have yet to see glitches. re: Bright and dark. Maybe you mean that there's more contrast? Keep in mind that you're looking at color graded footage. I show the raw color before color-grading at the beginning of some of the clips.
@@mtb_alan Ok cool. I guess gopro is going in the right direction with the previous glitches and other flaws. I have unfortunately not gotten a chance to try the hero 11 so I still can have the glitchers. It could possibly be the contrast but this "bright but dark" visual could also be due to the nd filter and the graded footage combined with that. Im sure it could be easily fixed anyways, and I could also easily get used to it. The OA4 hands down better than the OA3 but I think when the hero 12 is released things may be different.
Great vid, ready to pull the trigger. One question incase I missed it in the video. How much footage do you get in terms of time? On my normal local trails, I'd only need an hours footage for just the descents. One battery enough? Thinking I'd rather not buy the action kit but buy the chest mount as I like the idea of having on my back also, can film my dog behind then🙂
@@mtb_alan I got mine and found it. Power on, swipe down from top and an icon menu appears. There’s a button on the bottom left that locks orientation. I’m glad it’s there. Sometimes I fall off my bike and roll around a lot. 😂👍
Hi ! I plan to replace my GoPro Hero 9 Black with Action 4. I have to add foam for my GoPro because the wind sound are ugly. And managing this foam piss me off. The wind noise reduction of Action 4 is it good ? Thanks !
@@PetrPolach It sounds like you're talking more about ISO than shutter speed, eh? If so, I set max to ISO to 6400 and leave shutter on auto. This is to prioritize stabilization. If you want to set your shutter speed, use the 180 rule. But you'll be risking poor stabilization in lower light situations.
I've watched dozen of dji a3 vs a4 videos and a3 is just as good except for a very few cases. go pro blurs the video at the edges and if you like that then ya dji a3 is not a go pro killer. the a3 vid is actually wide than the a4 which is a bit cropped. the a4 smooths out the video internally taking away the sharpness in some cases. for the price a3 hands down it the clean winner. even in low lights it's good, you just need to set the ios, shutter speed and ev values and boom you got amazing videos.
Great video and very informative but what if you already have a GoPro 10 or 11. Forking over more money for another camera that does the same thing seems well…kinda silly. Good to know info for anyone getting into the action camera game. Had I known about this sooner I may have opted out for the DGI but I’ll stick with my GoPro10 for now. Thanks for the content Alan…🤟🏼🤘🏼
Nice, thoroughreview.. Stabilization looks solid, and the picture quality looks good. It might be helpful to post a vid or a short with footage of the same run with the GoPro 11 vs the Osmo 4
Also, can you talk to summit about removing the tree at 4:15 on miracle mile? It jumped out and grabbed my handlebars last time I was on the trail. So rude😁
I think it's better, smoother and crispier! Nice! 👍🏻 I download videos with medium quality for offline viewing because I have a limited internet time or and data. Many if not all with this kind of videos are blocky, no offense, they are still fun to watch. 👍🏻 Make new, better, fun and interesting videos in your own unique way? 👍🏻
Do you really need that nd filter? I think you do because you shoot at 24-30 fps and slower shutter? If you were shooting at 50-60 you would be able to set faster shutter and avoid the problems at bright areas
Nope. I don't need the ND filter. I also don't run higher framerate unless I'm planning to do slo-mo in post. That being said, the Action4 has pretty decent dynamic range and by setting a max on the ISO, you can run lower frame rates and also avoid the overexposure issues.
I wanted to use deadcats on the Action4, but I couldn't figure out a good way to do it with the mics below the lens. That's because there is a color temperature sensor right in that same area, and I didn't want to obstruct that.
The video footage looks terrible. But I don't think it's the camera. I think it's the camera settings and bad color grading. You need to ditch the ND filter. It'd hard enough not to crush the blacks on an action camera. Putting on the filter makes it much worse.
The DJI Action 4 costs more than the bike I have done all my videos on (a 2nd hand 2010 Giant Faith 0). I know which one I want to spend the $ on... and it's not a brick strapped to the side of my head... If they can make tiny drone cameras with excellent optics and stabilisation, why do we have to be "Amazed" with a small school bus strapped to the side of our head. (I have a pair of motorcross goggles with a camera between my eyes that has great optics... and that's 5 years old...

I used DJI Pocket 2 for a bit, and I liked it. Seems like DJI is making some really good cameras, while GoPro lost steam.
