    Really nice work, what is the wood? and has it been stabilized? also what do you use on your buffing wheel? regards from Scotland

    • @zeemanknives
      @zeemanknives  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello Tom, thank you for watching. The wood is Wild Olive, but this block was not stabilised...although stabilised wood definitely does offer its advantages. The compound I use on the buffing wheel is a standard buffing compound I buy at my local hardware store...in this case it was a buffing compound made for brass.

    Nice knife. The music made it unwatchable. It was like the soundtrack from one of those bad made for TV 80s movies where they couldn't afford a real composer so they got some random dude off the street to play his girlfriend's mix tape backwards while snorting coke off of a mailbox. Even with the sound all the way down, it would still be better with the hampster dance on continuous loop than what you've got here. I give the knife an A+ but can't even assign a score to the discombobulated acid trip that was the nightmarish sound in the background. Keep up the good work!

      @zeemanknives  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im sorry you found the music that tormenting...I made peace with the fact that no-one has the same music taste, and some will like it, and others won't. But, the music is not why we are here. I hope you found the video useful as a knife maker?

      @@zeemanknives It was a really good video, I just can't ever pass the opportunity for bad 80s references. The only knife I've made looks like it's from a Macgyver episode...I did it again.

      @@theprogressiveliberalchann3957 Music is a touchy subject in videos...I mean lets face it...theres not really a budget for this so I am left with what was available without licensing, which isn't much. Lovely knife, really well proportioned, great video to watch! My only critique would be that you should've masked off the wood when polishing the brass. Right now you can see that the pores of the olivewood have filled up with black gunk near the guard. Which is a shame because wild olive is such a subtle (and imho very underrated) wood!

    • @zeemanknives
      @zeemanknives  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Jonathan. Thank you for watching! Whereabouts are you based?
      Haha, yes the "tempering oven"...is probably a standard issue item with most South African families who enjoy camping in a caravan.
      To answer your question: In some of his vids we use very similar methods yes...biggest difference would probably be me finishing my bevels on a bevel jig instead of my grinder. I just get much more accurate results with my hand files...but if you are proficient enough with a belt grinder to match everything up perfectly then nothing stops you.
      If I can give credit to knife makers who influenced me on TH-cam it would be:
      Slavik Tely
      Walter Sorrels
      Gough Custom

    • @zeemanknives
      @zeemanknives  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could if you wanted to...depends on your requirements. Few things to consider...firstly, the tang is quite thin towards the back, so you would have to drill extremely accurate to drill trough the tang. Secondly, the tang should be long enough to balance the pins evenly on the handle...but that means you'll have the change the shape of the handle to a straighter handle to accommodate the longer tang. Thanks for watching

    • @zeemanknives
      @zeemanknives  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Conrad. The reason we heat treat steel is to transform "soft" high carbon steel, to "hard" high carbon steel. This allows the knife to keep its edge and perform the duties you need it to do. Soft steel will bend and lose an edge very quickly. We do not buy steel already heat treated, because it is much more difficult to work with hardened steel, than when it it is soft. Sure, you get specialised tools to work hardened steel, but these are much expensive than standard tools. Hardened steel is also much more aggressive on your tools...for example, you can cut 2 knife profiles with one grinder disc, where a hardened piece of steel, will eat through 3 grinder discs. Not cost effective. There's much more to heat treatment than just simply heating it up and dunking it in a bucket of oil...it really is a very important process in knife making.

      Hello Mike, thank you for watching. You will see in my later videos I moved over to voice over comments instead of typing it out. The drill bits i useis a brand called Ruwag, I think it is a local South African product, but it is the Industrial version in drillbit range. I know Alpen is also a popular choice.
