I was there. Being a poor teenager I had a tough choice but ultimately decided on buying the Santana concert shirt & passed up on Stevie's. Who would've known.
You witnessed a (2) very brief and very special musical prodigy of world entire history Stevie and jimi were here in one blink of times eye #perspective ❤
Um, do what we did in the 70s, make your own unofficial tour t shirt-- like a tie die or something-- all is not lost-- btw, thank the maker for the outstanding post-- it is the most.. ❤❤ sincerely, ub (unlicky? badstard)
My dad / 70 years a guitarist / saw Santana in San Fran just abt the time he graduated H. S. H had his amp plugged into a liquor store on High Street. Dad watched him a while and told him " Son, if you stick with that thing, you're going to be somebody some day." C.D.S. did graduate in San Francisco. I had to look it up to believe it!!
I saw Santana sometime in this era and lordy was it a transcendent experience. I was a teenager that knew enough to know they were good but not enough to know how good. Wish I'd seen SRV.
I worked at the closest hotel to San Diego state open air theater and the band stayed their several times and we saw them each time. I still talk about these shows today! So much grooving and jamming. I always talk about how Carlos would just walk over to different sections and just wave his arms and gesture. And then these amazing musicians would just go off and then Carlos would step to the front of the stage and just peel off some fantastic guitar line. Those were great shows. I remember them well.
This is the best thing about TH-cam. I never heard, or saw this before. Never even knew they did this at the time and was pretty aware of musically what was happening, but before YT, you stilled missed so much. This is one of the coolest collaborations I've ever seen. They sound great. And Santana managing to get as much of the original Woodstock band as possible together is amazing. Even got Rollie who sounded good as ever. And with those guys, especially Michael Sheives (likely spelling some names wrong) how could Carlos not open with Soul Sacrifice. There's a ton of great music from that festival, but Soul Sacrifice arguably was the most talked about and is probably imo, the iconic song of that festival. Imo of course. There was so many great performances, I won't argue with anyone who disagrees. But you can't deny how well that jam sounded and MS drum solo that not even he can duplicate That entire jam was somehow near perfect.
I saw Santana 2 years before this at the 20th anniversary concert at Shoreline Amphitheater. Then, one year after this show, I saw Stevie with the tour he did with Jeff Beck in 1989 at the Oakland Coliseum! Mind-blowing. Jeff Beck played first (they alternated shows), and Stevie came out after. A one-two punch I still haven't recovered from! 🎸 🎸 🌈 🌟
They didn't play at the same time, but I went to Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughn concert of the 1989 tour. They alternated the top bill for each show. Jeff opened the show I went to, and Stevie played last. What a show.
@@prajnachan333 They *did* play at the same time. The guests join about 15 minutes into this video. What a shame you didn’t watch the whole thing. Stevie Ray & Jimmy Vaughan, *and* Cesar Rojas onstage and jamming together !!
To Jimmy's credit he opened the door for his younger brother, getting Stevie in these venues all over. To SRV's credit: He did not fritter the opportunities. If only Santana and SRV had more time together. Bohemian Rasta Blues Rock genre or something. Like War meets Jimi on the bongos. Well, we just need to be thankful for what we got.
WowAwesome Gathering of Great musicians. I never saw SRV play anything but a Stratocaster but he was making that Doubleneck sound amazing Danelectro I'd say✌🏼😎☯️
@@jamespollock11 What’s your problem dude so sorry for the typo. I never mentioned anything about Carlos. and Gregg getting along. As a matter of fact, I met both of them in San Francisco at a club called Bimbos. They seem to be getting along great to me. Furthermore, I don’t give a shit about their relationship I’m into the music which apparently you aren’t ? You sound like a hater . You know where you can stick it deep. A- hole.
@@jamespollock11 I love Carlos’ music, have from the beginning, but I’ve heard from a musician who used to be in his band that you gotta be in top form, no mistakes, if you hope to avoid his wrath. Whatever man, I love his music and soul.
I still have the ticket stub and newspaper clipping. Pacific Amphitheater Santana's band listed on the clipping named Carlos, Ndugu Chancler, Alphonso Johnson, Armanda Peraza, Chester Thompson, Chepito Areas, Michael Shrieve, and Gregg Rollie. Sun. Oct. 2 1988 6PM
NO CERTAINLY NOT, Jimmy Vaughan iS a shit GUITARIST DON'T INSULT the GUITARISTs on the World WHO are 1 million Time BETTER THAn THAT shit Jimmy Vaughan😡😡😡😡😡🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕CONNARD
Actually, Stevie Ray sort of got pushed aside for most of the soloing. Jimmy got this spotlight. But of course, Stevie Ray would dominate the blues genre, with guitar playing AND singing.
It's amazing that the quality of the recording of this concert was 100 times _worse_ than that of Woodstock, 20 years earlier. Videotape was just godawful, a massive regression. Film rules.
Jimmy Vaughn always left me kind of empty with his playing but watching this performance I got it. He doesn't vibrato his single notes which takes the "sweetness" out of his playing. Just me.
Check out the album they recorded together called "Family Style" release in September of 1990. Also, in case you didn’t know, Carlos had a brother named Jorge (now deceased). Check out the album they recorded together called “Brothers”. It’s a great listen.
sorry the musicians on the stage don't add up to 1988, unless i'm wrong. that sure looks like michael shrieve on drums and is that greg rollie on organ? or was this a special reunion? it is cited many times as 1988 but i don't understand the band line-up which doesn't seem like that years' band...
Yeah that was Shrieve and Rollie and I should know this because I've been listening to Santana since "69 and that drum solo was like only Shrieve plays. The very small guy with the big 'Fro playing the Congas is Chepito Areas who was also with his original band like Shrieve and Rollie. He's in that big black & white poster of the band that came with the Abraxas album. I know he's from one of those South American countries and has always been a superstar in his country for having played with Santana and being such a great Conga player in a country where everybody plays Congas. That also might be Mike Carabello on the other Congas. Also an original band member and if that's Dave Brown on base then that's the whole original Santana band. BTW, the original bands name was "Santana".
Right, and Stevie would’ve never qualified to be the guitar tech for Guthrie Govan. Btw - just because one plays faster and more complex stuff, it doesn’t automatically make them “better”
@berto_the_n0ne Let me start by stating that I am a fan of Carlos. Im old enough to remember Woodstock, 1969. I was 10, but my "hippie" uncle was there. When he came back, he introduced me to Santana's music. He's famous and popular because he came on the scene at the right time. Had he came on now, he'd be just another decent guitarist. As I got older, I became a musician myself, drums, guitar, bass. Even though I'm a fan, and admit he's good, I still say he's overrated. He has a distinct sound and style, but it's the same thing. Has nothing to do whether someone can shred. Henry Garza of Los Lonley Boys has similarities to Carlos, and credits Carlos as an influence, but Henry has great variety that Carlos just doesn't have. Just my opinion. Carlos can blow me out of the water, but in an industry compared with other greats, he's just ok.
@john88…. The Vaughan Brothers don’t mix well with Santana….their styles are completely opposite….I knew this video would suck before I clicked, but I clicked….

I was at this show! SRV was other worldly!
He was the most precise blue guitarist ever
Beato te!
That PRS is so beautiful! He started playing those guitars in late 70s
Carlos got the PRS in 1981 using it on "Zebop!" for the first time. 🎸

I was there Santana Stevie Ray B.B king and Fab thunderbirds...

ladies and gentlemen, please welcome, the one and only, STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN
Greg Rollie gave the strongest live vocal singing, ‘Everybody’s Everything’. Along with Stevie Ray. Great, great performance!
Santana helped performers mix genres to learn from each other, all changed including Santana. That’s where it’s at.
Exactly. in my opinion, that's what music is all about. To create something you didn't know you needed until you heard it.
Thank you so much!!! Enjoy every minute of it!
Santana had no problem getting on stage with the best: McLaughlin, SRV, Takanaka, etc. he has so many great guitar collaborations.
What a lineup Carlos with the incomparable Vaughan brothers it doesn’t get any better than that honestly. Don’t recognize the drummer anyone
Hard to see him. But, looks a little like and sounds like Shrieve
Yes that’s Mike Shrieve who was Santana’s drummer at Woodstock and in my humble opinion the best drummer of all time.
It's the legendary Mike Shreive. Dude never aged.
IT MEANS YOU NEVER Saw the BEST MUSICIANS YOU loser😂
Thank you.
CT and Greg Rollie on keyboards magnificent artists
Gregg Rolie (that's how to spell his name...) and Carlos DID NOT GET ALONG AT ALL WELL.

Two Masters of their craft, just admiring each other, and challenging each other. Carlos and Stevie #1 and 1A
Who’s better Carlos or Beck or Clapton ?
Of all the songs performed at this show, I believe Coal Train was the very best.
PERFECTION
The bait doesn't say all star jam but it was cool to see Cesar Rosas there too!
yeah, SRV, Jimi and Cesar Rosas; Carlos Sanatana is awesome
Que registro maravilhoso.🎸☮️
What's the name of los lobo's guitar player? He is great
Wish I could have been there 😂🎉🎉❤❤❤
2 great guitarists and Jimmy Vaughan.
Three great guitarist.
Shots fired. 😐
And Cesar Rojas too . . .
Four greats, but I agree some ppl just don't jive with Jimmy, but he used to be great when younger, Ive heard him on fire before
😂😂😂😂😂
Jimi Vaughan is the brother of Stevie Ray Vaughan and sure a great guitarist too
Yes he approaches it such a different way it's boggling
Thank you ! 🌎💚✌️

I can only see Santana
Stevie playing a double neck, Jimmy in there with cèsar rosas from los lobos

didn't know richard pryor was so good with the electric guitar
Should have one more S in there.Stevie Wonder. That would be amazing.🦋
😮 I must be crazy all I see is Carlos and his band 🙅😅
Sweet

You took the words right out of my mouth. 👍
novo combo on drums
VAUGHAN BROS WITH JIMI !!!
Carlos has his own sound apart from any guitarist in the world 💪
The best Guitar player in Texas before Stevie came up was his brother Jimmie.
Part 2???
Is that the same drummer from woodstock? Looks like him. Really great drummer
I asked myself the same question, I think he is. Michael Shrieve, absolutly fantastic.
Carlos!!!
Who cuts a video in the middle of a Vaughan solo??? That's musical blasphemy, damnation.
Najbolji gitarista
I don't see Neal Schon in the band. Great guitarist that joined Journey!
