🚩 Due to popular request we are heading back to Ireland with the Battle of the Yellow Ford. Fought on 14 August 1598 during the Nine Years' War in Ireland, a Gaelic Irish army under Hugh O'Neill of Tyrone met the English crown expeditionary force under the command of Henry Bagenal, marshal of Ulster.
The battle greatly escalated the war. English Crown poured more men and materiel into the conflict, while more Irish lords joined O'Neill's alliance. The Nine Years' War in Ireland, previously fought mostly in Ulster, would soon become a struggle against English control over Ireland as a whole.
You're the Best! ❤❤❤❤
Lovely 🎉

@@Jason-fm4my Not sure bout Robin Hood. Tho I bought the game and it looks well made and its still in early access. Can recommend!
Irish archaeologist and historian from Tyrone here. Great video, the Battle of the Yellow Ford is known as Hugh O’Neill's greatest victory. Just a few pointers for the period. The Gaelic (not gallic) leaders were known as lords rather than (chieftains) which has come to the attention of modern Irish historians as a possible derogatory term used by the English against foreign peoples.
Also, it is debated whether the Nine Years War can be called a (rebellion) of the Irish in the first place, as the English crown had never militarily controlled Tir Eoghain and the other Gaelic lordships in Ulster until after the defeat of Hugh O’Neill and the Flight of the Earls in 1607. Keep up the great work! One of the best history channels on TH-cam.
Do you have other forms of social media? I believe I’m related to Scottish and Irish nobility and I’d like to ask you about the stuff I have found.

To causalhistory, this is truly fascinating. I had a strong feeling there was still a lot of things we still don't understand, know or miss regarding the historical complexity and the relationships between England & it's neighbors. Thanks for providing that historical insight for us.
As an Irishman it’s great to see our history being told on a huge channel such as yours, if only our education on our own history was as good as the video ye all produced
Totally agree,classic guerilla warfare
@@elizabethcanavan3755 yep we’re so good at guerilla warfare we may as well have invented it 😆
@@elizabethcanavan3755 not guerrilla war. It was a battle between two large and modern forces
As a Swede I giggle hysterically at how autotranslation makes the weapon pike not a pointy stick, but a fish, Gädda (Esox Lucius). Now I can't help but imagine the Irish fish slapping the English.
@@Justanirishfella this wasnt guerrilla warfare, this was a larger irish army with equal weaponry holding a defensive position
Great stuff. And excellent point about the Gallowglass. O'Neill modernized to the extent that the English had to copy him to stay in contention. But if he had've kept the Gallowglass quite a few of his victories would have been total annihilations. Look what the Gallowglass did at Curlew Pass for example. Also, for anyone interested in the wider context and details of the Nine Years War, James O'Neill has a great lecture on TH-cam.
The Battle Of The Yellow Ford took place partially on my uncle and aunt’s farm. He has found pike heads and sundry over the years. The lane at the back of their land was once a principal road into Tyrone. They live near Blackwater Town. Bagnall’s sword was found in the area some years ago.
Thomas Percy sounds like this type of MMO player that runs from one fight to another without waiting for a healer to be ready and then blames the healer for not doing his job 😂
@marcinsikocinski4661
Leeroy Jenkins tactics never ends well lol.
Sadly this isn't limited to MMO players. Politicians want to be seen as "serious", yet govern like spoiled kids.
I’m so glad you’re covering Irish history, it’s criminally under looked

The premiers are always so fun to watch and participate in. Keep up the amazing content and please make more Hannibal videos.
An excellent and well produced historical documentary on the O’Neill and the Irish rebellion. I hope you do more similar content on the Irish and Scottish wars of independence. Good luck.
Missed out on "plashing" .. the Irish used the trees to create fortifications. They would bend tall trees down and then weave the branches together thereby creating formidable natural barriers .. I believe (though can not prove) the Irish kept open certain passages through these obstacles. This would have allowed the Irish to rapidly redeploy whilst ensuring any pursuing English troops would become hopelessly lost trying to follow the Irish through the undergrowth
Same thing happened in India with the thousand mile thorn bush salt tax barrier.
@@robleahy5759 That is interesting
What is a salt tax barrier?
Video is good
Misses of a key part the front and middle of the English army got crushed .. only the rear escaped
@@dendradwar9464 I seriously think the ancient Irish made bramble fortifications and loopholes
That kind of natural fortifications were also prevelent in Germany but were more of a permanent structure in places used up to early 1800s. They were called "Landwehr" (not to confuse with the militia type units of the same name for territorial defense)and was used for border defence between the german states and principalities but also to create safe places for the population in case of an attack. The openings on the main roads functioned also as toll collection stations.
@@KlausKlausen-dj7nf Thats interesting, makes sense as well
Literally the best history channel on YT, keep up the good work!
This is the best account I have come across in a long time.
What especially comes through is how varied and difficult the terrain is, essentially allowing the concealment of large numbers of men and allowing the "defending" forces to choose what ground will support field guns.
In this case the English managed to do well after disaster ENE in having field pieces and grape shot able to keep O'Neill distant enough to run out of powder.
I am not sure that cavalry could have wiped out the English unless they had been concealed behind the field pieces and a little to the north. Even in scrubby woodland it is difficult to keep war horses quiet in the insect season and, once heard, even with such losses, a mix of pikes and rubbish shot from flared shoulder arms could easily have caused even pony sized horses to fail to charge coherently.
The Irish horse were never going to charge unbroken infantry; they had no shock value at all. Only the English deployed cannon, 3 light and 1 saker, and only got any value out of them when they were used to stall the Irish advance at the river Callen, allowing the English to make good the crossing south.
Little late for the premiere, will watch it right away! and have to once more say that the video on The Battle of Ankara 1402 is the best video you have ever made by far for me! and I hope you will do more videos alike!
Hope you enjoyed it!

Not a bad video. Great book covering the whole topic is The Nine Years War, 1593-1603: O'neill, Mountjoy and the Military Revolution by James O'Neill.
James O'Neill has a twitter account where he talks about this constantly.

History enthusiast from Serbia here. Beautiful video, I love Irish history (and people) - I think we have far more in common than people think.
I didn't know about this rebellion (huge mistake - I know), so I thank HM for making this video and making me Google up stuff! 😁
I have a question for you history guys: is there a documented relation between this O'Neill and those High Kings of Ireland O'Neil? Or is just a coincidence?
P.S. Éirinn go Brách!
Same aristocratic family
They claim descent from him
Yep, same lineage. They were the Lord's and Kings of Ulster. The Red Hand was their family emblem.
There were two branches of the O'Neills, one in Ulster and the other in Meath which borders Dublin to the West. At different times one or the other branch were High Kings of Ireland, but in the 11th and 12th centuries the O;Briens (descendents of Brian Boru) and the O'Connors also competed for the throne.
I love your content, History Marche!
Amazing video as always HM!

When Chicago was lobbying for the Olympics, camp Randall was one of two stadiums that were likely to be the cremony host site.
To be the host stadium, you need to have a capacity of
75,000. Soldier field only holds 61,500. Other stadium considered was Notre Dame.
Fantastic work
As usual, great video !

It was an informative and wonderful historical coverage episode about the yellow fort battle between Irish confidrate armies and England invaded column ..at 1598 AD where Spanish military aid for Irish lords was notable in several occasional ...English forces focused on Ulstear region subduing.besides attempting to conquered whole Irelands .. thank you 🙏 ( historyMarche) channel for sharing
Rest of Ireland subdued and Ulster last Gaelic holdout.
I Neill happy to be under English but they insisted language and culture must go plus they kept pushing settlers.

great video. thanks again!
O’Neil played a blinder here as not only did he put his forces on an equal footing with their opponents technologically. He set the perfect trap to Lure the English government army to disaster with classic hit and run and ambush tactics. English army only escaped destruction due to both sides running out of powder.
Another outstanding video. Wow. Just, wow.
Thanks for the video
Fascinating! More Irish history please!
Thanks a million for this very well done and very interesting………what could possibly go wrong after this in Irish history….
This video is great, you guys should consider making a video on the battles of Breintenfeld and Lutzen on the same vibes as the battle of ankara, those were absolutely titanic clashes and only a few know about them
Working on Breitenfeld now.
@@HistoryMarche YESSS thank you guys, love your videos! I REALLY recommend you guys give the battle of Ankara treatment to Lutzen, it's was probably the most titanic and climatic clash of the early modern period! Good stuff as usual!
Thanks for the video, my own family also took part in this battle, the O'Rourke's had the Kingdom of Breifne for several centuries. As far as I know it was largest defeat of English soldiers on Irish soil. I read about 1,000 killed.

Its awesome to knowabout this not so famous battles
Great example of a defending force using the terrain to defeat an invading enemy. Percy rushing forward when the rest of his column was strung out sealed the deal. They should have known it was a trap. Had he waited, the artillery could have been put to much better use to punch holes on troops blocking them before advancing full on.
Loved the video. Wil their be anymore video's on this war?
Likely, yes.
Seems like the constant trend throughout history is that those leaders who employ terrain, barriers, obstacles, etc. while doing ambushes always seem to come out victoriously.
need a part 2. O'neill is a bad ass
Any suggestions for books or articles to learn more about the nine years war or irosh warfare during the early modern period?
What a commander Wingfield was to take control at short notice in such a dire situation!
