NATO at 75: More Allies, Less Unity? | To the point

- NATO is celebrating its 75th anniversary -- in the shadow of unprecedented challenges. Just as alliance leaders were gathering, Russia bombarded a pediatric hospital in Kiev, killing and wounding dozens of children and prompting Ukraine’s president to renew his pleas for additional air defense systems. Whether such support will be forthcoming in future even if Donald Trump returns to the White House is just one of the doubts worrying NATO members. The alliance is bigger than ever, but does that make it stronger, or potentially more divided? Can 32 member states maintain a united front against aggressors? The question: NATO at 75: More Allies, Less Unity?

It’s always the people that when the war comes won’t be the one on the front line talking the loudest.
2% of GDP now to deter OR 40% of GDP later to fight. The choice should be obvious.
Yes. Later.
@@urbansenicar81 try a full sentence sport. English really that hard even with a built in translation feature? Like you can't type a sentence in any language?
NATO is one country with 31 slave countries...😂😂😂😂
How can there be "unity" when all NATO members are not equal?? The United States always gets what it wants; you think the same can be said of Portugal or Estonia????😂
Be careful what you wish for. If Trump is elected NATO countries like Portugal and Estonia may be able to do whatever they want to but with Russia at their doorstep.
nato is a democracy, i know someone like you got no idea how a democracy works, you should study it, you might learn something
Yes! A corrupted democracy most of it just stays on paper not in practice.
Who has tried to invade the us? And have been the us invaded
And who have been the us invaded?? Shall I write the list or you have the intelligence to search for??????
More allies for wars but less unity for peace!!!
Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime.
Tell that to Putin.

Europe forgot how to actually fight
One of best pretexts the Dictators around the world can respond to “their actions of lethal destruction” is “rejection”…!
More importantly, they always act as the “victims” of what happened…!
As always Marcus Keupp was spot on and interesting to listen to. However, the other participants were not at par, and the show format needs tweaking to generate a flow and interesting debate that actually generates new food for thought.
Notice how they side stepped the question of "Would Poland be next"

Are thinking about yourself?
Fun how the USA used to be the leader of the free world, with NATO on top of their greatest achievement, only to now give their president king power to stand above the law and destroy the alliance they built.
Well, not the weirdest thing that happened in history ^^.
The USA IS the leader of the world. Wtf are you talking about 😂
There are no president king in NATO. Each country has veto powers.
Still, US still leads the free world. Free world also means each other country has a say and viewed equally by US.
@@TakZ000 You seem to have missed the last development in US politic, especially when it comes to their supreme court ;p.
@@Wvavy And then, trump and his MAGA movement ;p.
On September 12, 2001, a day after the terrorist attacks of September 11, the United States officially requested the support of its NATO allies, invoking Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.
Was the assistance from other countries, nato members sufficient at that time?
It was but this is a bad example because the US really did not need assistance.
yeh they won over two countries aand held them for 20 years while only lossing a couple thousand troops, so it was very succesful and suffcient it seems

it is like this in the Eu the bigger you get the less consensus you have, it needed to be deeper first.
32 members means nothing. Not all members are the same.
And no mention of India, who is buying Russian resources as well.
Not dozens of children (three too much), but three, and the possibility exists that it was a Ukraine air defense rocket.
How can 32 nation fighting russia cry for china help

no one is crying but you, most of us are laughing ^^ its putin who is crying to china, iran and NK
It's hypocritical
EXACTLY
NATO is a laughing stock
take out the "N" and the "A" of NATO, reconsider the original aims, the original circumstances, realize, that they have been similar to today, only not around the North-Atlantic, but the entire globe, come by that to the conclusion, that a deterrence treaty organization up to date needs to include Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand and find out, that right that would be the solution to the world's issues.
Yes - China would bark loudly - but discover its priority for pecuniary interests.
THAT alliance would be the framework that could work without US, but would hurt US when leaving that much that it will stay and even accept its reduced dominance.
Founding that alliance would mean a new accession process, demanding of Hungary and Turkey a re-consideration of their orientation.
They would NOT orient towards their failing besties.
Not at least:
THAT would be the urgently un-bypassable security pillar of UN-SC.
Send this groups to front line .
I'm outraged by this video but since DW removes comments with genuine criticism I'll leave it like that.
I remember when rocket lauched handgrenades were used to take over the Government of Ukraine.
Organizations like NATO start failing, or having more serious internal challenges to existence, when they loose the commitment to the organization charter. NATO members for decades got used to depending on the US to serve as sheriff of the world and stopped the financial investments they signed up for. Trump is a complete lunatic and criminal but he served to show how weak our systems in the US, and some international, are. The big question in the air now is: Are we going to use the learning and fix what we see is deficient?
As an American i can't wait for The United States to get out of NATO. I wish all Europeans luck on your security. America doesn't belong in Europe and we don't need to be spending money for European defense.
I agree with you. The United States should have left when the Soviet Union collapsed.

Russia is all alone even USSR broke down then why are they expanding NATO?
Not expanding. Countries join NATO, because Russia would invade them otherwise.

Russia is not the Soviet Union and definitely not the Warsaw Pact. Compared to the EU, which has four times the population and ten times the economy of Russia, Russia cannot win a war even against the EU. NATO is even bigger.
Have you not learnt anything with this war .... Russia is not Iraq or Libya.... plus one thing that you should know is most countries are not with the west .. China. India. Saudis... and within nato you have Orban and Turkish president who could easily swing the other side...then you now left with Germany.France and maybe Poland
@@BhekimpiloSmanga True, and France could easily swing in a not so distant future. Let's not forget how France withdrew from NATOs integrated military command in 1966.
