On the surface this may seem like a nice, fluffy pop song- but this has always been one of my favorites because of the deep, existential crisis the narrator is experiencing. I normally don’t like songs in this style, but man this one just hits like a truck. “I could leave but I’ll just stay, all my stuff’s here anyway” is such a great lyric. Hits home
This takes me completely by surprise. I had always considered BNL to be "just these dudes". This (along with all the other songs in this set), have opened my eyes to just how talented these guys really are. I just spent a little time to grab the guitar and play along with this. It's not as easy as it looks. Different style, a few different chords. In any case, the writing of the song is awesome, even before the performance. And the performance is just excellent. It's rare when you get both.
i was listening to this and thinking wow this guy sounds exactly the same as the original. Then, i scrolled through the comments to find out that he actually is the original lol i love this song!!!
I throw this great tune into sets at gigs every once in a while and I ALWAYS forget the final chord to land on! Love this version and the extra guitar stuff he throws in.
His consistency in playing the hammered base line, his over all control while singing, I was first amazed then I start to laugh ... it's crazy... and the fact that he does not even take himself and his mastery of guitar seriously .... how can you not love him and his fellow band mates?
I remember listening to BnL as a little kid and i just started listening to them again they have already become one of my favorite bands and this is probably my favorite BnL song.
What you guys didn't know is that Ed accidentally locked himself inside his own bathroom for 3 days and had nothing else to do but record these. He survived off a lone fruit roll up that had been dropped in the corner, although he had to wrestle a mouse to get that and ended up with only 2/3rds of the snack. There is a lesson to be learned here folks.
+rocketman16 : Snuck in through the air vent in a rescue attempt. Exit route got closed off. He had to hang out and record some stuff too until the rest of the band blew the door open.
I am 20 years old, and whenever I tell people that BNL is my favourite band they give me a really funny look. Almost like "really? but they aren't 'cool'". It's hard to explain to them if you aren't a huge fan. There is just something about their music that is so comforting and classic. I also recently saw them live and they are phenominal. I couldn't believe my ears.
I'm now 34. Fifteen years ago I would have been 19. I agree with this post entirely. Their music, particularly this song, has aged well over the years for me. Looking back, Megan V, if you were able to talk to your 20 year old self, what would you say? Sincerely, A stranger on this strange "place" called the internet. -SmeiskAudio
@@SmeiskAudio I’m 41, 15 yrs ago I was 26, rocking out to their best of album. I just saw them live for the first time last summer. Agree with you guys and love you both! If I could talk to myself then, I’d say…..stop being so scared, you and no one else will remember anything for very long, go for it, be confident knowing cause there’s really not enough time on earth to worry. Will it be mortifying if you get rejected or fail? Maybe, but you’ll get over it, toughen up, PLEASE
.i walked into a tent in Glastonbury in '92 and was stunned on the following Monday i saw you guys play the Borderline in London when Steve introduced you guys as 'the fat Canadian Housemartins' and i was hooked for ever. i watched you at every gig in london since as a group and as 2 songwriters you have enriched my life.Remember whats important, otherwise it will be like Zebras, they will have you confused. love, light and peace
What the hell! I just realized you are a Bare Naked Lady ! I mean....Band man... no wonder it sounded spot on. Going to have to see you guys in Cols. Oh. here shortly:
Not many people realize what this song actually means, or cares that it is not really that happy, its more of a revelation of whats right in front of you, and what is out there for you to find.
In 88 I was workin' part time at KBAC, Santa Fe. BNL came in town, opened for John Wesley Harding. Came to the studio w/ him and played live. Cut my last class to race to hear / meet them. Ended up giving them a ride down town so they could shop for some native blankets. They were great. Cracking jokes, lovin' their job. 2 yrs later, in Dallas doing my masters. See them live, headlining. After, see Ed in the back among fans. He looks at me and says, "I know you right?"... Quality Guy.
I just love your music, can't hear enough of it. You were the first concert I took my daughter to, years back in the Gorge during the wild fires in Washington state. Hope all is well with you and yours!
you guys are so great and i love how you change up your lyrics, it's so much fun and it's keeps you listening. you guys are so just AWESOME, thanks for inspiring and making great music.
Lol, Ed you rock bro. Can't tell you what a relief it is to see I'm not the only one who sings with their eyes closed.!! :) Keep on playing man. Your music is timeless and awesome. Peace from Calgary
see that vaulted ceiling ? that makes all the diff in acoustics of a room , it's kind of like a air handler for an A/C but it circulates vibration and vibrant tone gives the guitar a lot of depth and his voice resonance
best band ever. no matter what other people think about them these guys are one of the best livebands. every shows is great and their voices are always like the cd recordings.... ive heard a live performance of madonna once and it sucked ass.... but these guys always have great live shows. worth every dollar!!!!
I watch it probably every week ..been doing that since he posted these...and it's not a problem..you do it because it blows your fuckin mind..good day to you sir 😊
Hey dude! you are the real Ed Robertson from Barenaked Ladies!! awesome acustic version! I realy love the way you play it. Congratulation. Saludos from Spain.
I mean harmonics...at 2:35 those ringing notes are played by lightly placing a finger on the the string directly over the 5th fret. Not by actually pressing the string to the fretboard. This can be done over the 5th, 7th, and 12th fret. Check out bathroom sessions bedside manors at 1:27 and the end of the song. He uses harmonics there too.
got some irie vibes goin' there man! nice... i like it when major labeled artist do this kinda stuff.. it's so natural! big ups.. much love and respect!
Funny thing is, I've seen BNL live 5 times but it wasn't until watching these bathroom sessions that I realized Eddie is the real frontman for this band...amazing guitar playing...
I've seen this video 100 times and the riff with the harmonic at 2:33 still gives me chills.
vct33 Uh, yup! Amazing!!
because its actually sick AF
Ed is one of the most underrated guitarists out there. His pick hand is as good as anybody's.
Thought this was a cover, I was like: holy shiiiiiit this guys good. haha
This isn't a cover
That's ed Robertson from bare naked ladies
I thought the same thing lmao
I also made that mistake lol
two of my favorite bands of all time, Barenaked Ladies and Dave Matthews Band
My least favorite band: Barenaked Dave Matthews

beautiful song, its usually hard for one person and guitar to give the same experience as a full band, but he rocked it!
I am LOVING these bathroom sessions! Especially with ED!
My favourite line is:
"I feel fine enough, I guess
Considering everything's a mess"
Sums up my life pretty well! lol
I keep coming back to this vid....over and over and over
41 people are deaf! Great song! It takes a truly talented artist to sound this good outside of a studio!
Always makes me smile & remember a very good time in my life !

Oh my God, that's a very real possibility. This needs to be made into a full-length film.
Topher Holland How did Steve get in there? Was he locked in there too?

Richard Burkhart And I am sure Jim tried ramming into the door with his bass xD
This playlist should be digitally remastered.
The Barenaked Ladies truly know how to write good music. Love them!
Every artist should do this with their songs. I love this song and seeing it played by him on his house is priceless.
The BNL are my favourite band - ever - and this is my favourite song - ever.
This was nearly four minutes of pure magic.
Sometimes bathrooms just have the best acoustics.

Not many people realize what this song actually means, or cares that it is not really that happy, its more of a revelation of whats right in front of you, and what is out there for you to find.
A truly talented music artist who thoughtfully and cleverly goes the extra distance--and deserves to be where he is.
When I feel lost in reality, I listen to a song about feeling lost in reality.

Way ahead of its time. Imagine Ed doing this at 2020.
I remember the 1st time I heard this song. And now I've heard it all over again. Tks man.
I was like damn, this dude sounds exactly like him, then i looked BNL up on google and felt like a moron.
well do you smoke weed ? if so there's an out , if not....i talked to god. He said he can get me out of this but your screwed
This was always one of my favorites :) I've been listening to these guys since I was little. My whole family loves them.

this was about the 1000th time i listened to ed sing this and it just keeps getting better
That was a 5 star video. The visual was close enough to see how you played it and your voice sounds great.
Thanks for the video.

15 years down the road and we're still listening. It's unfortunate that Stephen had to go but they made a lot of good music with him still.
Wow, fantastic! Its always great to see musicians in thier most intimate performing moments.
I love this song. This is easily my favorite riff of all time.
A true musician needs no electronics! Ed.... you rock brother!
"I just made you say under wear" hahaha highlight of my day! ahh.. Kids these days with their skateboards and rap music:)
Very few people I teach musically have such a rich, deep tone like you...you're definitely a rockstar man...great job and keep the tunes coming!
Oh yah
SO AMAZING Ed you are what being Canadian is all about man KEEP IT UP
i play this song on guitar everyday. Probably the most fun song to play that I have found in the past 10 years.
Hey thanks for uploading the bathroom sessions. I'm learning to use a pick and this is like a goldmine for me.
this video rocks my freaking socks off, the song is amazing and he is an excellent guitar player........i especially love the harmonics
Wow that was sooooooo good!!!! I am still watching it over and over again, lol!! That was truly awesome!!!

I watch it probably every week ..been doing that since he posted these...and it's not a problem..you do it because it blows your fuckin mind..good day to you sir 😊
These chords and style have influenced my guitar playing.
@relke
I agree 100%. Total SLICKNESS! I get chills every time I here that riff with the harmonic.
How cool. Just saw you guys in Vegas at the Lawson conference and was looking for how to play this song. Couldn't ask for better than this!
Every bit as awesome as the recording. Love this song.
Hey dude! you are the real Ed Robertson from Barenaked Ladies!! awesome acustic version! I realy love the way you play it. Congratulation. Saludos from Spain.
@sattilteoflove I did the same thing. They were my favorite band as a kid and I forgot about them and now they are quickly becoming a favorite again.
Really, really cool. Love this song! Really love the casual feel of this performance. Even cooler.
What an iconic feel good song beautifully performed raw. Thanks Ty for the awesome music and for making the world a cheerier place :)

Thanks I really enjoy the bathroom series... Saw you last year in Montreal great show!
Very pertinent with what’s going on right now! Stay safe during the quarantine!
Very nice song. I just heard this song on FM and I loved it and decided to look this up on wiki and youtube. You guys are pretty talented.
I love this tune. I def think its one of BNL's bests. The guitar is perfect tune. Such a killer tune Rock on my Canuck Brother.
My favorite song of all time
Friend: what are you doing?
Me: oh just looking at a barenaked lady in the bathroom.
I've loved them all my life even been to a concert by them... Their music is awesome
Very well done! The guitar and vocals. Amazing!
ATTENTION EVERYONE
This is the person who sings the song, He is IN THE BAND Barenaked Ladies, he is a professional and has made many more songs.
Ed sings like a boss! You're ridiculously talented dude!
best cover i've ever heard of this song

Mate that's a great version. Love it, love that riff.
this song always relaxes me after a stressful day.. :)
one of my most favorite bands ever
I am just amazed.
So good acoustic!
that guitar, man
It's a Taylor....fucking outstanding and expensive guitars...sound is impeccable
Yup Taylor lol
i love originality in musicians and these guys were always completely original and they're just that fucking awesome
Very cool. Been a big fan since they started coming to Halifax.
They were booed of the stage at one point, not sure why - 'Hello City' was the result.
not even 500,000 views.....how sad. this is awesome.

can't wait to see you perform at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, May 8th!!!!
Funny thing is, I've seen BNL live 5 times but it wasn't until watching these bathroom sessions that I realized Eddie is the real frontman for this band...amazing guitar playing...
So crushin on Ed. Love this song and his music ability
one of my favorite songs and videos ever. :)
Ed was already practicing for the Selfie Cam Jam. What a dedicated man!
