NYC MAFIA CEMETERY St John | Middle Village Queens

  • My NYC Mafia history tour today is at the St. John cemetery in Middle Village, Queens, where many famous people are buried. Due to security reasons I was not able to film too much inside of the cemetery, but I filmed from the outside so that I could tell you all this story.
    It is understandable as to why permits are required to film inside of this cemetery, as I am sure they get a lot of visitors who are interested in the history of the famous people residing here.
    My goal had been just to film the landscape of the cemetery anyway, just so that you could all appreciate just how big the graveyard is, but I understand that I wasn't allowed much further than the gate. Either way, I hope that you all enjoy the story anyway.
    St. John Cemetery is an official Roman Catholic burial ground located in Middle Village in Queens, a borough of New York City. Although it is mainly located in Middle Village, the southern edge of the cemetery runs along Cooper Avenue in Glendale. It is one of nine official Roman Catholic burial grounds in the New York Metropolitan Area. St. John, along with St. Charles/Resurrection Cemeteries in Farmingdale, Long Island, is among the largest cemeteries in New York State. Since its opening, St. John has been the resting place of various famous and infamous people in New York City society, such as Mario Cuomo (1932-2015), Governor of the state of New York from 1983-1995, John F. Hylan (1868-1936), mayor of the city of New York from 1918-1925, Geraldine Ferraro (1935-2011), the first female Vice Presidential candidate representing a major American political party, Lucky Luciano (1897-1962), considered the father of modern organized crime in the United States, and John J. Gotti (1940-2002), the head of the New York City based Gambino crime family from 1985-2002.
    Also buried here are fitness guru Charles Atlas (1893-1972), slain NYPD police officer Rafael Ramos (1974-2014), and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989).
    Organized crime members buried in St. John.

    When I was a kid on the Lower East Side I used to get my fireworks from a Mafia dealer on Sullivan St. These were firecrackers, cherry bombs etc, and they were still illegal. Had to meet him on the street, at a certain doorway, mention what you were interested in and how much you were gonna spend. Quietly pass him the money, after some minutes, he'd return with your goods. For a kid in the early 1960s, these were nerve-wracking minutes. But it was great to have lived through those moments, as Mafia-connection as they may have been, Mick

      Because I live in Maspeth, with the surrounding areas of Ridgewood, Bushwick and Glendale, even to this day I think that you have to mind your P's and Q's. It isn't like it was even 30 years ago, but you know that it is still there under the surface. I live just down the road to Big Joe Massino's club, which remains shuttered even to this day. In Glendale especially, that is like the Italian's Italian neighborhood, hand gestures and everything, lol 😁

      Hey Don, I was already prepared, I kind of knew that I wasn't going to get very far so I did a walk around beforehand to see what I could film. My script was about ten minutes long so I just needed enough footage for ten minutes ;) It might have been better if I found five more minutes, that way I wouldn't have had to cram the pictures in and double them up when doing so, but overall I am happy with the result.

    Hello frnd. Good afternoon. I was listening this story with my pleasure and so interesting. Awesome and good stuff. St john cemetery the entrance of the main cemetery already looks impressive and interesting graveyards. Vice President of the United States Geraldine Ferraro. (1935.2011). Etc.... interesting IT places for famous burials. This cemetery is big and it something special from other cemeteries. I am really proud of you. You are working hard. Filming the graves for family members that live far away from where their relatives are buried is a great and very kind idea, Richard. The entrance of the main cemetary already looks impressive. It more looks like an entrance to a little compound or village than to a cemetary. A pity that you were not able to walk along all these interesting graveyards. Looking forward to your next video (probably about BTS?), my dear friend. 👏👍

    • @richardarthur-nycstories
      @richardarthur-nycstories  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Filming graves for families was really rewarding, but unfortunately it was also frustrating. I filmed dozens of graves and took pictures for everyone, but only like one in ten people would even acknowledge your effort. Many times I filled a request for someone and I never heard back from them. It's a pity really because if they responded to my picture upload they would also find out that I filmed the gravesite as well :) The image that I shared of the K-Pop band is of BIGBANG. They recorded the music video to their song "Bad boy" in Williamsburg. It won't be the next video, I still need to film it, narrate it and then edit it, so the video will take me a couple of weeks to put together :)

      @hdi4eva-castlesbydrone531 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What a fabulous azure sky!! I always notice the sky 1st! Such a huge cemetery- do New Yorkers utilise crematoria? Would save on space. I get the feeling that Italians prefer burials just from other films etc. Over here we are desperately short of space for conventional cemeteries - 2 new crematoria have opened near here to cope.

    • @richardarthur-nycstories
      @richardarthur-nycstories  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know what, I don't really know the answer to that to be honest. It probably isn't as big as it is in the UK, I mean both of my parents and both of my brothers were cremated, and I probably will be as well. In the near future I will visit the largest cemetery in America in terms of interments, over 3 million in one cemetery alone. Obviously I will only visit one part of it (the oldest part) but I believe that is also a Roman Catholic cemetery.

    Hello, dear Richard! First of all I still see how much snow is left ... Really a big snowfall in recent days!
    And today a wonderful sunny day!
    Always nice the effect of whiteness with white snow!
    Well, it must be said that a lot of people are really buried here and not only belonging to organized crime, but also politicians and celebrities.
    I'm interested in that Mae West story… I'm curious!
    As always, your videos are interesting and I learn something new every time. I am waiting for the new video from Williamsburg!
    Have a great day, my friend! Cheers and greetings from Italy. Renata

    • @richardarthur-nycstories
      @richardarthur-nycstories  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Renata, the Mae West story is one that could be quite complicated. She grew up in Bushwick but her family moved constantly, so while she was the next door neighbor of the Mayor at one time, I also know of two other addresses where she lived in Bushwick. Because she was such a presence in Bushwick it almost seems romantic that people throw her name into every story, whether the story is true or not. If you ever read a story about Mae West that states "Rumor has it", then almost certainly it is not true ;) The day was gorgeous and I made three films on the day, I will probably put the really ling walk up on Sunday. The combination of the blue sky and white snow made for a perfect video.

    • @richardarthur-nycstories
      @richardarthur-nycstories  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The story of Mae West is quite a complicated one. While she grew up in my neighborhood, her family was always moving around. So many places claim that Mae West lived there at one time or another, it is a matter of finding out what it true and what isn't. Mae herself was known to embellish a story or two as well 😂 Eventually I will do more talking videos, but for now I have hardly anyone watching my videos so I will save most of the narrated ones for later. They take an awful long time to make, so when I get the "Nice video, big like" comments on these types of videos it annoys me to no end 😂

      It isn't as bad now, but even back 20 years or so ago I would watch my tongue. It still exists, and hits still get put out, but you don't read about the turf wars in the papers anymore. It is more underground nowadays.

    Oh, it's a cemetery that needs permission to shoot inside. The size of the St.John cemetery seen from the outside looks very big. It's an interesting cemetery with many celebrities buried in it as well as 'Carmine Galante' from the previous video.
    I look forward to the next video that will feature the K-pop band's music video.😀

    • @richardarthur-nycstories
      @richardarthur-nycstories  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cemetery is super big, I only scratched the surface. Even if I had made it inside I would have had to walk a really long distance to get to the main section. You are correct, Carmine Galante is buried here!! As is John Gotti who was buried along with his son, Frankie. His son was accidently killed is a car accident, and the man who was driving the car disappeared and was never heard from again!! The K-Pop video will be a couple of weeks away yet. Even though I hope to film it this week it always takes a while to do the narration and editing.

      I can get you in riding in the car. My family's plot is literally 100 meters from Zaccaro (Geraldine Ferraro's husband's family) plot! LOL! There is one JUGE mausoleum on (what I like to call "millionaire's row) that is devoted to someone named Vascimini whom was a private that died in World War One. As hard as I try, I come up with snake eyes, no matter where or how I research!@@richardarthur-nycstories

      It is always nice to tell a story that reaches someone on a personal level. Unfortunately I couldn't film inside of the cemetery due to the amount of people who, like me, try to film there. It must be a bit of a nuisance for them if I am honest. Maybe one day I will go back in without my equipment, carrying only my cell phone.

    St. John's is a Catholic cemetery. That's part of the reason why so many mobsters were buried there.
    Decades ago Christians were far more aware of denominations. Protestants had their own cemetery. So there actually fewer options for Catholics.
    Thanks for the video.

    • @richardarthur-nycstories
      @richardarthur-nycstories  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would make sense!! I guess so far my experience has been multidenominational cemeteries, other than the obvious Jewish ones. They are always fun to walk around for a heavily tattooed man, guaranteed that someone will call the cemetery manager on me every visit :) I wonder if Catholics still have to use a Catholic cemetery or whether they can used a mixed one now? I will have to look into that.

      @@richardarthur-nycstories We are Catholic but my grandparents are buried in "Lutheran Cemetery" on Metropolitan in Middle Village. I think it's now "All Faiths Cemetery". By the time my grandfather died in 1979 Christian denomination was not an issue. But decades before when the first mobsters needed a cemetery plot it was. My childhood friend Cecelia lived in the caretakers house of the Jewish cemetery on Metropolitan at Flushing Ave because her parents were the caretakers. That house was creepy.

    • @richardarthur-nycstories
      @richardarthur-nycstories  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@keithbarbaro7590 Yeah, I have actually filmed a story in the All Faiths cemetery. I did a feature on the General Slocum disaster and filmed the memorial that is located in All Faiths while narrating the story. The Jewish cemetery I have only filmed the exterior. Is the caretaker house the one by the gate? If so I tried to film the date on the house but I didn't really catch it. On that day I had just finished filming in the cemetery directly behind the Jewish one, the Linden Hill cemetery.

    Just wondered all these mobs celebrity were buried at St. John cemetery ? Did thier family not aware about St. John ? Subject apostle found to be of good moral character , not killer as what these mobs doing during thier prime years in Mafia. To me it is an insult to injury St. John mixed with notable , gangster . Their family should look for better place to bury thier loved one.

    • @richardarthur-nycstories
      @richardarthur-nycstories  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are some churches here in New York that refuse to conduct funeral services for these guys, but for the most part these are family plots bought many years ago. Gangsters have been buried here for over 100 years now, from all different families, so I think that it is more that a family knows that they can buried their loved one here because the cemetery has always done it.

I'm right there with you, I'm going to end up on Hart Island, there's literally nobody left to claim me, lol. What I have always found unique about St. John is that the gangsters aren't buried by affiliation, and in fact some of the gangsters are buried close to the gangsters who killed them. Quite a bizarre cemetery.
