  • This episode of Grounded looks at Air UK (or AirUK depending on how you look at it), formed through the amalgamation of four smaller airlines AirUK became the largest regional airline in the United Kingdom and the country's third largest airline behind British Airways and British Caledonian.
    AirUK operated from 1980 until 1997 when it was rebranded as KLM UK and then divided up between KLM Cityhopper and Buzz, the low fare airline acquired by Ryanair. This episode tells the story from start to finish, hopefully doing the airline and the folks involved proud and hopefully, not too long to watch either ;)
    *PRODUCTION NOTES FOR THIS EPISODE*
    *This episode took a lot longer than planned to produce due to a few issues, in order to do a good job, I have not rushed it though I have had to trim it slightly for timing purposes.
    *The joke regarding the weather - I know the skies are blue once above the grey and rainy clouds, I don't need reminding - I spent some of the best years of my life above the clouds ;)
    *I have tried to put a couple of other jokes in here, hopefully they hit the mark :)
    *The Dan Air London 737 G-TREN - I have indeed worked on that aircraft, in fact it was the second aircraft I worked on as Cabin Crew (Flight Attendant) when it was with Islandsflug as TF-ELV.
    *AirUK Leisure / Leisure International and British Island Airways (1982) are currently in production and will arrive in due course :)
    *Airlines Referenced in This Episode that are covered by other Grounded Episodes*
    UK International - UK Long Haul airline headquartered above a furniture shop;
    • Grounded: UK Internati...
    National Airlines - Established in the late 1990s and part owned by several Las Vegas hotels, National operated a fleet of Boeing 757s;
    • Grounded: National Air...
    Hooters Air - The Restaurant Chain had it's own airline for a few years, operating some 737s and 757s;
    • Grounded: Hooters Air
    Gill Airways - A regional airline based in the North East of England;
    • Grounded: Gill Airways
    Viking Airlines - Expanded into the void left behind by XL Airways following their collapse, ran into the ground by the same management team;
    • Grounded: Viking Airlines
    XL Airways - One of Europe's largest travel companies collapsed spectacularly in 2008, part of a several episode arc this episode looks as the fall of XL Airways;
    • Grounded: XL Airways
    Excalibur Airways - Where it all began for me, Episode 1 of Grounded looked at this promising UK holiday airline which following a takeover was led by some fairly braindead management who bankrupted the company within months;
    • GROUNDED: Excalibur Ai...
    If you are interested in the history of ITV, Matthew Harris has a great series called "ITV in the Face", episode one looks at the South West region and covers Westward Television and its successors;
    • ITV In the Face Episod...
    I really hope you have enjoyed this episode, I have been wanting to cover AirUK for quite a while. I am fairly happy with how it has come out and hope that you folks like it :)
    Thanks for watching and I really appreciate any feedback or suggestions for future episodes.

    The first 146 in service G-CNMF was operated on the Guernsey - London Heathrow route upgrading it from the F.27.
    No Air UK history ever mentions that for a short peroid Channel Islands flights were opersted under the 'Air UK ChannelHopper' umbrella, althoiugh no aircraft ever wore those titles. Air UK is still after all these years missed by islanders.

      Yes, I had heard ChannelHopper being briefly mentioned but as I didn't have any solid dates decided not to mention it as I didn't want to say something incorrect :/

      @David Rawsthorn At the time the UK 146 arrived on the scene it was Shorts 360's on the LGW route, so your statement is incorrect.

      @David Rawsthorn I wasn't commenting on the reasons for the withdrawal of the route/aircraft.

    I knew this one was coming - AirUK was always an airline that fascinated me! Once again, an excellent episode of Grounded.

      Thank you, I am glad that you enjoyed it :) AirUK was one that I have wanted to cover for quite a while now but was put off due to how long it would take to make, I'm glad that I had a "spare" episode to publish whilst carrying on working on this one :)

    I can remember the many routes air uk used to fly out of leeds/bradford airport. Nice looking colour scheme on those f27s
    You can see the dominance of the british airline market in the past together with the passion and belief in our united kingdom with all these airlines with british in their names

      I was never really a fan of the original livery, though whilst it was arguably a product of its time it was also very unique compared to the rather more conservative designs used by BA, BCAL and Dan-Air.
      I had hoped that when Delta acquired a big stake in Virgin Atlantic, that combined with KLM's stake (and their ownership of the Air UK brand) would have brought the name back but alas that deal fell through.

    Good job! I can recomend to all AirUK fans here on YT to watch the flight from LHR-GCI. A superb crew and good CRM. It is filmed by Jumpseat productions. Enjoy!

    Excellent coverage of Air UK 🇬🇧
    I totally love these videos of the yesteryear airlines. Can’t wait to see the one of Dan Air! Hopefully that should be coming soon. Thank you so much for providing us with these interesting videos. Keep up the great work and well done 👏

      Thank you, I'm delighted that you are enjoying them :) Dan Air is on "the list" though it is looking like quite a substantial one to work on, hopefully when I've got enough episodes completed and "banked" I can spend a month or so getting Dan Air put together :)

    This was great. I never knew all those Wooster models I had were so connected . Great Job.

      @ExpoAviation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, it is quite shocking how many airlines are connected though in the case of the UK, it seems to be the case with the majority of our airlines - Three of our largest charter airlines were started by just one man, who also worked for another one before that, bonkers really :)

    very interesting video. Please can you do future videos for AB Airlines and Debonair, thanks

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Andy, I'm glad you enjoyed it :) Debonair is pretty close to the top of my list of ones to do as it is one that I have wanted to cover for quite some time. AB Airlines is also on the list, I had started to do some work on it last year but got a little overwhelmed by the various names associated with it, rest assured though, just like British Rail, I may be late but I will get there ;)

    An airline run by a small TV channel, eh? This crazy world just gets weirder every day! Good job on the video btw.

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Harvie, yes Air Westward were one of many small airlines having a go of things until they got scooped up by the bigger guys though Westward Television were having a few problems of their own which may have facilitated the sale.

      Northeast Airlines (the one in the US that got bought by Delta) was owned by Storer Broadcasting for a good chunk of its latter history, but that was a group of television stations and some pretty big ones at that (WJBK Detroit, WJW Cleveland, WAGA Atlanta, among others). Westward was just one station, and one of the smallest in the ITV network.

      Thank you :) Both are on my ever-growing list ;) I started the process on Silverjet 2 years ago, as a follow on from FlyJet but there is a lot of dirt that still needs digging up and sifting through but I will get there :) GoFly will be on the way soon too, I'm glad I could get the briefest of mentions in this one :)

    Nice video. Flew on Air UK Leisure (B737-400) to Innsbruck from LGW in 1996 and Air UK (BAe146) to Innsbruck from STN in 1997. Great airline! Sad to think it could still be around today if it hadn’t been absorbed. Are you going to do Dan-Air at all?

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it :) I didn't get to fly with AirUK myself though my uncle used them regularly, even though he would have to route through Stansted and that speaks volumes for how good they were. Yes Dan-Air is in the works, their story is quite long so I've got to try and squeeze it into a sensibly sized episode, but yes, Dan-Air will be covered :)

    • @aviationstack
      @aviationstack 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I loved there Fokker fleet when they were around back in the days :*( shame it didn't last long when they were around they would be a great Domestic airline today if they like Flybe & Eastern airways.
    I really love watching these bankrupt videos you make keep it up Expo I be seeing more in the future 👍

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, I appreciate that and will do - I've got dozens more on the go :) I liked the BAe146 but then again, they were built just a few miles away from where I grew up :) I did like their F100s as well, they looked really smart in their final AirUK livery. I think if they had a bit more time and didn't get broken up by KLM they could have become a real dominant force down at Stansted, especially as the airport was so under-used back then.

      They won't be in the next few but I have started gathering information on them, there doesn't seem to be "that" much info out there but could fashion an episode out of it - though I would rather keep digging and hopefully find something more substantial :)
