  • Watch our new video: DIY - How to Find the Proper Lens Strength for Your New Eyeglasses • DIY Optometrist - Choo...
    In this video, "hot water" means water with a temperature of 50°C or 122°F.
    We touch our glasses regularly and if the COVID-19 coronavirus can remain active on surfaces for days, as recent studies show, we should wash and disinfect things we touch more often. This video shows how to clean and sanitize your prescription and sunglasses. Just like washing hands after you returned home, wash also your glasses. Here’s how to do it.
    Hello and welcome to the TranslatorsCafe.com Channel! In this video, I am going to explain how to clean your eyeglasses or sunglasses with or without anti-reflecting and oleophobic coating.
    Many people clear lenses of their glasses like this: they exhale onto their lenses and then wipe the fog off with a dirty piece of cloth. In a couple of months their plastic lenses are damaged and much to the joy of opticians they order a new pair of glasses in less than a year.
    When 10 years ago I started wearing reading glasses every day, I did not know how to clean them. I saw many products for cleaning and even tried several of them until I found the best way to clean my eyeglasses without scratching them - to wash them. It should be noted that when I made a research before starting making this video, I realized that the idea is not new and that many people clean their glasses this way!
    The first thing: never ever dry your lenses with paper towels, which contain wood fibers that can scratch your lenses. Also, never use even 100% cotton material, which can also be filled with dust, which contains abrasive particles.
    Although you can use special cleaning solutions, don’t do it if you don’t want to waste your money. The cost of water, drop of isopropyl alcohol and a drop of dishwashing liquid is almost zero comparing to the cost of cleaning solutions.
    Just wash away dust from your lenses with warm water. Then apply dishwashing liquid to both sides of the lens and rub them gently. Rinse with tap water, then do a final rinse with distilled water. Distilled water is necessary if your tap water is hard. Dry then with an air blower or with a compressed gas duster. Your lenses will be clear and clean with no scratches.
    So, here are the steps:
    Wash your hands to remove grease from your fingers.
    Rinse your eyeglasses with warm water to wash away dust from your lenses.
    Put just a little bit of dish soap between your fingers. Dish soap is designed to remove oily and greasy residue from your dishes. This is what you want to do to your glasses! You want to remove grease!
    Apply the soap thoroughly with your fingers in circular motions on both sides of the lenses. You can also continue applying the soap onto the rest of the frame, including the temples, bridge and nose pieces.
    Rinse your glasses under warm water, which will remove the soap. Do not use your fingers while rinsing. If your tap water is hard, that is, it contains dissolved minerals of calcium and magnesium, then you will need to rinse your glasses in the distilled water.
    After rinsing, shake or tap your glasses against your knee to remove water drops.
    Now use an air blower or compressed gas duster and blow all water that remained after tapping.
    If you used distilled water, blowing is not necessary. Water will dry without any traces of salts on the glass.
    All glasses and sunglasses often come with a little cloth. Opticians put this little cloth for one reason: they want you to come to them more often! Any cloth and especially paper towels and any other paper products will scratch your lenses because they contain abrasive particles. Besides, cloth and paper usually just smear dirt all over the lenses.
    When you use the compressed gas blower, press its trigger gently because it can “spit” liquid in the gas stream. If this happens, you will have to repeat cleaning with soap and water.
    You can wipe any residual water only from lens edges.
    A note about alcohol. Some people say alcohol can remove lens coatings and leave a fogged lens. I used isopropyl alcohol to clean particular greasy lenses and never noticed any problem. Isopropyl alcohol is also used in commercially available pre-moistened lens cloths.
    The same technique can be used to clean camera lens filters used when taking pictures with a DSLR camera. Wash them with dishwashing detergent, then rinse with running water, and then do a final rinse with distilled water. After that blow off all drops with an air blower.

      Instead you'll ruin the coatings for anti reflex or anti water, making them less effective. You'll claim "its never happened to me" thats because its gradual and you get used to it. Grab a black screen on your monitor place a white crosshair in the middle and watch the streaks of light that shouldnt be there.

    Oxygen and any source of h2o rusts the metal on my frame and screws and only the parts where the anti-rust coating has been worn away or never existed. I've been doing exactly as the video suggests, as did the clerk advise, to clean my Bolle Serengeti Sassari glasses and the lenses are in mint as new condition after a year of regular use. Additionally, I would add that you should keep your glasses in the case they came in for protection when not using then. This is also where your lint free cloth should also be stored so as not to accumulate any particulates which may end up scratching your lenses, and yes if you buy a quality pair of glasses like Bolle Serengeti they will provide a non abrasive lint free cloth and this will work great to apply the final polish after cleaning. Over time maintaining your glasses this way will result in your screws becoming loose over time and you will need to keep tightening them, it's the price you pay for proper care and condition of your lenses, yes I know people say it's from taking glasses on and off with one hand but I disagree.

    I clean my glasses as this video instructs. Once I have my glasses cleaned, I apply 2 coats of Whoosh Screen Shine on both sides of each lens. Whoosh does all it says it will do and does it very well. I find I need to clean my glasses way less often, maybe once every seven to ten days. I love Whoosh!

    I put my glases under semiwarm tapwater to get the dust off them. Then i clean them with YES (the original green version). I then pour water over the lenses without rubbing my fingers over the lenses. Then I dry the water off with a clean papertissue directly pulled from the package. Ive also buy the best lenses that are as hard and thin as possible also with anti glare coating. Ive not had a single visible scratch on my glasses and have been wearing them every dayfor 3.5 years.

    • @andrewjohn6853
      @andrewjohn6853 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The anti scratch coating on my bolle serengetis is outstanding and just following the clerks instructions for care over a year later they are still in mint as new condition. They are the latest in photochromic technology I can wear them in all conditions and I rate them highly I would never use the "buy cheap glasses and replace when scratched" option you can buy a quality pair and as above have them for years and years no problems and of a much higher quality = better quality of life overall.

    I don’t know about any other viewer but I always have small bottle of isopropyl alcohol, dishwashing liquid, a hairdryer, a fresh water supply and a can of compressed air handy for just when I might need to clean my specs on the go... yeah right! All those products might be available at home; that is if you have the time and inclination to go to all that effort but for me it’s too much pissing around and a massive waste of water. I like the disposable alcohol soaked sachets. Relatively cheap, easy, convenient, always handy and never scratches your lenses. Yeah, yeah I know what you’re going to say but, to me landfill is the lesser of two evils as I restrict myself to a max of one cloth per day.

    You're on the right track with your good but way too long video. A few points I'd ADD: 1. lukewarm water as you don't want to thermally shock the lens and its coatings. 2. Try Dawn Erasing Foam (dilute it 50% or more and it works even BETTER). This stuff is perfect; puff out a little blob on the lens and rub it around. (you can use a little corner of a WET paper towel to get under the nose pads (nose grease is a thing). 3. Rinse and then a final pass through a stream of water with no bubbles in it and if you're careful, the hydrophobic surface of the anti-reflective will just 'blink' the film of water off the surface leaving NO droplets of water on the lens. (if some remain, WICK them off with the edge of a tissue note: NO RUBBING). Touch the frame on a towel and you're done! Do this every day after dinner, before Jeopardy!

    I tried this but the results for me werent as good as expected. The compressed air is quite expensive and the cleaning is not that good. I do have my glasses for five years and scratches are not that big even if i always dry them with a piece of clothe.
    I think key is to buy a relatively cheap but quality pair of glasses but at some point we'll have to replace them anyway we cant have them for ever ;)

    The only problem I've had with this method is if used often, the corrosion of the the metal hinges that allow the arms of the frame to bend. After about a year, my arms fall off and sign of corrosion are apparent. I'd use this method maybe once every week or two tops.

    Been wearing glasses for almost 40 years now....in fact, forced to have 2-3 pairs these days for different tasks. Cleaning glasses is easy, and almost any method will work when eyes are young and prescriptions are minimal. However, as vision deteriorates, and the magnification level of the glasses get higher, any small particles or smudges will have greater impact. Eventually, one I forced to clean glasses weekly at a minimum, possibly daily if active. Liquid cleaners and clothes are about the worst possible way to clean. Whoever invented microfiber clothes is the devil....its almost impossible to keep them clean enough for regular use. This video is right to suggest avoiding all clothes. Alcohol wipes can also be dangerous, but least they work and give excellent results for a few years until the lenses need to be replaced. Most glasses only need to last 4-5 years. The newer wipes with very low alcohol contents (blue merlin) are very promising. Especially when combined with air sprayer to remove any lint. Stay away from Zeiss wipes however....their formula changed recently and will destroy glasses within 6 months.

    Translator, you have some good information here. I use isopropyl alcohol too and recently heard from Essilor corp (they make Crizal and others) R&D dept and they stated that occasional use of isopropyl alcohol is OK but not for everyday as it will accelerate degradation of coatings. I think many people do not realize that a tiny bit of invisible dust will scratch lenses. Your technique minimizes the risk of this. Every step must be free of abrasives. Oh, in the absence of canned air, a large photographic Rocket brand bulb works adequately. Thank you for this presentation.

      Never wipe lenses with a cloth as he mentioned. Rinse them with water if you do and then use a microfiber cloth for lenses cleaning only. It's a good idea to have 4 or more of these. Toss them in the laundry and wash them on a warm water cycle with clothes of a similar fabric. Use this method for cell phone, tablets, motorcycle helmet visors and so on.

    Some said the dish washing liquid contains compounds that can also scratch the lenses :))

    Dont use soap and stuff with alcohol or acid, on glasses with antireflex and such. Cus it'll damage them over time.

    On car detail videos, it is said that dish soap has thousands of tiny microscopic abrasives designed to remove dried foods from dishes and pans. It is also stated that using dish soap eventually will produce sandpaper like damage to a car paints outer sealant. Now, I am confused.

      I think I would immediately notice scratches on lenses if dish soap I use contained abrasives. They say about abrasives on websites that sell “specially formulated” car wash liquids. They probably forget that dust is the main abrasive.

    most glasses nowadays are coated with a layer that prevents scratches, if you wash your glasses with hot water and soap you'll damage them,

      I wash them already more than 5 years. No issues with the layers.

      I wash my glasses with watter and soap for about a year now. The clarity of the lenses is not afected. I belive that coating is called a blue light filter coating where im at. I had no issues with the coating by washing the lenses. The optician recomended this cleaning procedure to me, wich is quite surprising considering she could of easilly fooled me by recomending expensive cleaning solutions .

    Soap and water is the best, but it is not always practical. If you are out and about you don't always have access to dish soap and warm water and canned air.

    just tried... unfortunately for the water drops you still need glass cloth to remove it, hairdryer cannot get away the water stain.

      Hair drier will not work because the air flow is too slow. You need compressed gas or just rubber air blower.

      @TranslatorsCafecom  ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, you can... if you know how to polish plastic of which lenses are made and how to apply anti-reflecting, anti-scratch, and other coating on lenses after polishing :).

    Can I wash Versace sunglasses?

    • @TranslatorsCafecom
      @TranslatorsCafecom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You paid $30 for the glasses and $300 for the name on them. Of course they can be washed. The quality and features of your glasses do not depend on the name. Adding a brand name is just a way to cash in on buyers who are willing to pay for it. Therefore, Versace or no Versace - you can wash them.
