No, most states do not require a deposit to go into a separate account, I've been a landlord for a long time, only 7 states out of 50 require an escrow account for deposits (escrow accounts cost money to setup), not even new York requires one unless you have over 6 units, many states require separate accounts but not most. I live in Louisiana, it is not required at all.
I get tips at work and I’m a bus driver, I save my tips up and after a month I probably have close to $800 in singles, not enough for rent but my car payment for sure

A tenant has the right to leave in 2 or 3 days if they choose. However, it's common knowledge they forfeit their deposit if they do so(unless the deposit was more than a months rent). Other than not keeping the Plaintiff's deposit in a separate account, the Landlord seemed pretty decent.
But she lied about the new tenants move-in date and the $500. Plaintiff was fairly ignorant of the laws, and didn't get an affidavit from the neighbours. Usually, the judge doesn't accept no lease, and no receipt as excuses. So, no, I think she is a liar and the landlord bias kicked in. It's there, but no judge is perfect. JM tries to be fair. jmo
