How I Built My Snooker Table

  • Keep in mind that this project was by no means about creating a professional quality table. This particular table is the only one I have ever made, for my own beginner training purposes.
    The table bed is made of 35mm MDF (medium density fiberboard).
    As long as you build a rock solid, wide (as close to the edge as possible) flat base underneath, the MDF will stay straight, and no problems will occure.
    Costs: Somewhere between five and seven hundred Euro.
    Time consumed on project: 2-3 weeks
    Do I have plans/ blueprint? : No.

    Very nice 👍
    20 years ago I found 4 Riley legs and 4 side rails in a reclaim yard. Decided to make a snooker table seems i had the legs !! It was a great project, took me few months to do but worth every minute I spent in the garage building it.
    I purchased all the materials like pockets, cushion rubber, baize, balls etc from a company Iin Liverpool called Paragon ( I think) snooker supplies. Brilliant service.
    It weighed a ton when finished and had to get a company in to move it from the garage into the conservatory 😀
    It played beautifully until me and the then Mrs decided to go our own ways.....sick of me playing snooker most probably!
    I sold it to guy who had a villa in southern Spain. I drove down with him in the van to his place to help move it and set it up. Ended up staying there for 3 months in the sun 🤣🤣
    Anyhow, to anyone who thinks of having a go building one, do it !! Best thing I ever made and was more gutted at losing the table than splitting up with the nagging ex.

    Oof, amazing work of course but using a wooden bed like that is going to make it warp over time with humidity and very soon you'll have the balls rolling wonky, which can ruin a game of snooker. Buying the slate would have cost a couple of hundred, but I'd have said it's a worthwhile investment. It's also a shame you didn't fit the cloth properly around the cushions, it's a bit of a tricky skill to stretch the cloth tight and smooth around the corners.
    Maybe you can upgrade at some point if you ever get to re-clothing it or if it starts warping too badly though.

    Well done . I would be a bit apprehensive about using anything other than slate though,in case a ball was dropped or came down onto the bed and dented the MDF .Otherwise ,Great job .

    • @RommieKamzols
      @RommieKamzols  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is not a concern whatsoever, because MDF is hard and dense af.
      I have pointed out the only tradeoff about MDF snooker bed before, and it is the fact that it can vibrate slightly and thus slow down the ball on some stronger shots when cue ball kicks. But that problem is eliminatable as well by just using even thicker MDF attached to a very steady platform.

    • @DaveKarloff
      @DaveKarloff 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RommieKamzols I appreciate that ,however it's just me,I would have to have the slate,as I will not work with MDF anyway. Slate will never move ,warp or react with damp. Any eventuality that's all. Still a great job though mate. Respect to you.

    Really good job .
    Not slate ,but who cares .
    Your creation ,your enjoyment .
    I work in the wood working industry .
    Been doing so for 30 year and back in the early 90's before TH-cam I made a pub size pool table .
    The bed though was made of 2 different thickness board.
    Mdf.
    33 mm & 16 mm which I glued together using contact glue.
    It worked out well .
    Balls rolled really good too.
    But heavy tab for pub size , 6 x 3 foot .
    Later sold it.
    Then made another one for my friend same thickness play surface but this time 8x4 foot .
    Really heavy ,lol.
    But enjoyed making it.
    This has inspired me to make another one sometime in the near future .
    Focusing on another personal project at the moment trying finish it. ( not a pool table )
    Anyway great stuff , keep it going mate.
    It would be great to see you make another one.
    Cheers !

    well done great work. I'm here after thinking about making my own (prob 8x4) table. I'm interested to know how it plays... that's the most important thing - does it run fast/slow on mdf, and do the cushions act as they should?

    • @RommieKamzols
      @RommieKamzols  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say my table was fast enough tp make it enjoyable to play. Cushions acted a bit slower especially on heavy bounces you could see that they absorb the energy, as the ball would bounce off and lose more of its speed than it would on a professional quality table. Still if your goal is not to replicate a top quality table, a well made homemade table will do it's thing. I had a lot of fun on it. Next time would make a double mdf bed to make it much more heavy and stable.

    • @Csharpflat5
      @Csharpflat5 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You could try retro fit it with “steel cushion rails” a lot of the newer tables are using this I would use 6mm steel plate bolted to the plates and cushion if you want more response to bounce as it doesn’t soak up energy. The is content on TH-cam. Also add leveling screws to the frames and insert steel disks under the MDF plate use 25mm spade drill and superglue in steel disks. The Rasson pool table has level 21 point system under plates system which is the way to go

      The answer is, the mdf is still very solid. As I point out in the description - it is crucial to have a solid support underneath. The bed support has to go as close to the edge of the mdf as possible, otherwise you will cause the mdf to bend when you lean on the cushions etc.

      Hey. Good question. Since MDF isn't as heavy and steadfast as slate, I used 60mm wood screws when I attached the boards to the base. But be very careful when you fasten the screws, do not make them go too deep, because that can damage the board
