- Rusty 18th Century Pocket Knife Restoration. I found an old rusty knife in the woods. The pocket knife was very rusty. I decided to restore the knife and conserving the old iron to preserve the historical value. I noticed the master's mark on the blade of the knife. I removed the rust and conserved the knife and made a handle out of cherry wood. I hope you liked my restoration.

Fascinating work, here. I hadn't seen Sodium Hydroxide used in this manner before. What does it do in the conservation process?
NaOH dissolves rust and does not damage the metal. This method is used in museum restoration

Little FYI…from the 1750’s to 1910 (ish) the bespoke man of moderate wealth pocket knives, upper quality furniture and decorative items for the home were made of walnut. It was very hard to come by and was a sign of means.

Great job as usual! I know Nothing about what you do. But I’m curious why you used Na0h instead of Vinegar and or electrolysis?
Vinegar and electrolysis affect the metal. The blade of the knife was very thin. Therefore, I decided to use NaOH, because it has no effect on the metal.

Total idiotically done. No electrolysis, no sandblasting, no coat of cold blueing & no oil for the wood. No polish at all at anything. Is this the right process? Or isis it just waste of time & energy doing something in a wrong way? He did see the jewel in it but didn't know the restoration process. So he did it his way which is way way worse than a correctly restored piece.

Перша реакція така "Так, ну зараз буде електроліз", тим паче, він для нього прям ідеальний, але ні, просто лугом іржу знімати))
Як ти міг побачити, реакція у нього не те, щоб дуже, точніше, дуже не дуже))
Тому, думаю експеримент провалився, під електроліз - супер, але іржу знімати, вже швидше оцет взяти
@@Bohdan_Oleksandrovych він абсолютно не чіпає метал… тому для цікавих речей я використовую його… довго… деякі предмети по декілька тижнів вимочуються, але результат добрий
@@Bohdan_Oleksandrovych в основному NaOH використовують практичні всі реставратори, гарно вбиває іржу, але як Євген вже писав, процес цей довготривалий..

There were nice pictures of similar knives on Pinterest, what is the name of that particular shape of blade?
It looks a bit like an 18th century version of what I think is known as a kiridashi knife. It certainly looks as if it was designed as a craft knife. For leather cutting, maybe?

@@johnryder1713 True enough that kiridashi knives, as far as I'm aware, don't normally fold, and I presume that "kiridashi" is a Japanese name, not European, but the similarity is there. Well restored. I don't recall that you sharpened it, but it's easily made usable again.

Can you tell me what is the advantage of using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to remove rust? I was under the impression it didn't have any effect on most metal oxides (except for like, aluminium or zinc)??

How is it that you can claim this to be 300 years old? Where is the proof? It may well be true but honesty would require some kind of provenance.
